Had my Moonlander for about 4 months now - absolutely love it. Expensive, but worth it if you spend a lot of time on the keyboard. One of the best time-saving tips is to map a key to keyboard reset - that way you can hold down the key to enable the layer that has your reset key, then push the button. Saves a heap of time when you're first setting up and re-flashing a lot.

I spend a LOT of time writing stuff on my computer, heck, I even created (and is still creating, because it never stops) my own language, and oh boy would I like to get a Moonlander, but I don't have enough spare money to afford one when getting the bills paid is already hard enough Once I'll have enough to the side tho, I'll get one, tried one that one of my friend has, it's absolutely awesome, and, weirdly enough, I don't seem to struggle quite as much as many people to switch to these kinds of keyboards

Hell yeah brother, just received my Moonlander in the mail! Immediately broke it by over torquing the left thumb pad screw. It’s reverse threaded, super good to know. Zsa has excellent customer support btw.

It seems you are not the only one. I feel this may be a weak spot of the keyboard. It has happened to another youtuber. For those considering the moonlander, do realize the screwing of the thumb cluster is opposite direction to the other legs. This is by design, so that when you put weight on the thumb cluster, it does not unscrew.

@@DistroTube I second that. After you have had some time to use it, please make a video - even if brief, letting us know what you liked, what you did not like. Especially valuable I think would be comparison to the ergodox. There are very few videos out there comparing the two. Some exist, but they compare it from a build perspective, not usage perspective. I do think there are important differences between the two keyboards and the moonlander definitely might not be a better fit for some people. Seeing they are the same price, it is hard for folks to decide which one to buy. Cheers!

I've had my Moonlander for ergonomic reasons and I love it. I've had it about a 2 months and I'm still getting used to it. But I also decided the change in keyboard would be a good time to switch to DVORAK. It's a tough transition but because i dont type perfectly on a standard QWERTY I'm learning to type from scratch with the Moonlander and building up better habits. But the Moonlander it's self is Awesome. and so powerful. 100% customizable. Pretty much infinite possibilities. I don't have an issue with the reaching the lower Thumb keys, so it might be a hand size thing. I know on their site they recommend people with smaller hands tilt the thumb clusters up rather than down but that removes the tenting ability. There is 3d printed options available for having the tending without using the thumb cluster as a support, and I believe they're working on another solution for this.

I agree, Ben is like a keyboard scientist. He really makes quality videos and goes deep int explaining the rationale behind his setups and opinions. If you are serious about mechanical keyboards, you need to watch his videos. Even though I do not use an iPad (linux only for me) I particularly liked Ben's video where he challenges the notion to make an ipad a productive piece of hardware and his journey to make that happen with a mechanic programmable keyboard. You will honestly learn a lot watching his videos. There is a reason why the company behind moonlander chose to put Ben's videos on their website...

The thing that makes me want to try ergos the most is the fact that you actually use your thumbs for more than one thing. It's ridiculous that conventional keyboards only use both thumbs exclusively for the space bar. Meanwhile people are getting bad cases of Emacs pinky. It's less bad for me, because I add a modifier to it and problem solved, but still, with the ergo designs your thumbs can easily do two or three things EACH. And that's without doing two things with one key (one for pressing, one for holding).
@technologicalwaste7612
@technologicalwaste7612 3 жыл бұрын
The thumb is the most powerful finger, but extremely undervalued.
@censoredterminalautism4073
@censoredterminalautism4073 3 жыл бұрын
@@technologicalwaste7612 Yes. Not used nearly enough. And from what I hear, to make things worse, it seems like people don't use the alt keys with their thumbs (they say that super is easier to use, so I can only assume that), and to me that's just bizarre. It's the easiest modifier to use, in standard layouts, if you use your thumbs, but somehow people don't use it. And if you can change your layout, you can make one of the alts be something else too. And you can make them do different things when pressed.
@SoundToxin
@SoundToxin 3 жыл бұрын
Once you use some of these more interesting keyboards, it starts to seem absurd that the spacebar is so huge on traditional boards. 6.25u usually. I use a Pinky4 where all the keys are 1u and I have 4 thumb keys per half. It avoids a lot of wear and tear on my pinkies by letting me hit ctrl, alt, super, and so on with my thumbs.
@censoredterminalautism4073
@censoredterminalautism4073 3 жыл бұрын
@@SoundToxin Even keeping the same overall layout but splitting the space bar would be a big improvement (I only haven't done it when I built mine because I was trying to save money and didn't feel like buying additional keycaps). It's absolutely insane that something as useful as Backspace is so far away from everything else. Even Enter is kinda annoying (I have an ANSI Enter, which is easier to use while typing, but still would be better as a thumb key). The Caps Lock key is particularly ridiculous. It's so useless that I don't even have one, and it's in the best possible position for a pinky modifier. Here it's Ctrl and Esc, basically a key for everything Vim. And damn, the Pinky4 PCB is actually not that expensive. I don't know if it existed when I built my keyboard, but if it did and I could go back, I definitely would have bought that instead. It would be nice to just get a good PCB and build my own case out of plastic and a metal frame (so it's light and very robust), but I don't have the equipment and resources to do that right now unfortunately. Maybe later on if I live that long.

To say nothing of the 32 layers for the ergodox/moonlander or the multiple ways each key can be programmed as a modifier (ex: tap, tap+hold, double tap, hold). At this point, only your imagination is the limit. Your keyboard can be programmed to the n'th degree...

The fact that the switches are exposed on the sides makes it look unfinished. Pretty bad. I would like to try something like the ErgoDox, though. Very curious about that, but it is really expensive. Maybe I can get a used one at some point just to see if I like it, and then if I don't I can sell it. Maybe try someone else's if I find myself in a place inhabited by actual sentient humans that do things beyond following a very simple script provided by their TVs and pretending very badly to be human. Is there support for other language keyboards, such as Scandinavian layout?
@edakimling133
@edakimling133 3 жыл бұрын
The thing to understand here is that 'layout' is the name of the game for these type of keyboards. You can rearrange the layout any way you wish with their excellent online configurator. So the answer is yes. As well, if you do not look on your keyboard, you can take advantage of the 'layers' and program multiple layers - so you could have 1 for scandinavian, another for english...and switch between them rapidly and with ease. You can program up to 32!!! layers. So you could have layers just for numpad, or for specific apps, or games, etc. Or full fledged re-programming of all the keys, like I already mentioned. Of course the keycaps could physically only be re-arranged for one layout...

Meh, CLI is better any way, so that's not a major loss. Great that it exists tho, open source community is amazing. The way I use split keyboards in the past (I want to buy moonlander for work, get into dovrak, add some macros) is that I keep the right keyboard where people usually keep the mouse, so that my shoulders and arms are strait, no inward angle. I also keep the keyboard columns perpendicular to the table - again, no inward angles. Then I put the mouse in the middle. Yeah, it takes a bit to get used to, but then I also use total commander and terminals, so not that much mouse movement. When I program, I usually stick with page up / down, and keyboard shortcuts for navigating files. CAN'T WAIT: * to have ctrl + alt + shift on a macro * to have shift on index or thumb instead of pinky * to not do much with the pinky in general (maybe switch profiles and nothing else) Everything else is just flavoring. Removing pinky from the equation and having *software* dovrak so that I'm using both hands equally is the bestest.

Just wanted to comment that the Wally GUI software does/should work on Arch-based systems (and should work for other Linux distros no problem). There are two steps provided in their github's Linux install Wiki that are necessary. The first is to make sure that the necessary dependencies are installed. The second step is to create and add the user to the plugdev group (if it doesn't already exist) and then to add a file with specific rules to /etc/udev/rules.d/50-wally.rules. There are different rules for the Ergodox EZ and the Moonlander, and you might have done like I did and only placed the Ergodox rules in the file originally. Either way, I have been running this on multiple systems with Manjaro, with no flashing problems, since I got it in January. If both of these steps are done, the program should recognize and flash the software.

@@edakimling133 The moonlander is hotswap? I missed that on the storepage, my bad. The benefits are pretty substantive, but does come down to personal preference. It can greatly improve the sound, and reduce unwanted friction, improving keyfeel. There's millions of different lubricants you can get, expensive ones and cheap ones, varying in viscosity (thickness/greasiness) and granularity. Krytox 205 Grade 0 (K205G0) is widely known to be the best/most used/widely applicable/most premium lube to use for keyswitches. It's the only one I've used though, so I can't comment on how different kinds give different results and I don't think I'm a big enough snob to even tell the difference anyway. The mechanical keyboard rabbit hole is very deep and dark indeed. You can built your own personal keyboard by hand, with the most premium look, feel and sound and unlike any other. Just be aware it'll cost a lot of money, and figuring out your ideal combination of parts it terms of results vs. cost will take quite a bit of research.

I think that is the point of the moonlander keyboard being more compact - you take it with you. Of course not everywhere could you set it up, I get it. But presumably if you are doing a lot of work, you'd find some place and yes, 'deploy' your moonlander

On a somewhat unrelated note, I've been thinking about getting an ergonomic keyboard, however I have become too reliant on shortcuts like Shift+F6 and others including the function keys, which however, seem to be missing from Moonlander and the like. Is anyone here aware of similar (preferably split) keyboards with a dedicated function key row?
@DistroTube
@DistroTube 3 жыл бұрын
The default key layout for the ErgoDox and Moonlander has the number keys serve as function keys on layer 1. So hold the layer 1 key (bottom left) plus 6 and you get F6.

I would urge you to read up more on the website of the company and watch Ben's videos, You will discover that there is nothing this keyboard cannot do a regular keyboard can, and ton more. You can program your shift keys to be anywhere you want. Also, there are 4 types of modifiers you can assign any key (tap, tap+hold, double tap, hold). You could never do this on a regular keyboard. Also, to answer specifically your point about F keys. The way to go is that ergodox/moonlander have 32 layouts you can program each. So, you could chose which modifier key will trigger the layer (that would be your shift equivalent) and it would enter another layer (and like I said, this modifier could trigger the layer by tap, holding, double tap or tap+hold). On this layer, you can program your top row, or any row, to act as F1 to F12). The reason that the company did not print the upper row for F keys is because you can re-arrange the keys around, and the F keys are not used heavily. And with 32 layers, the print on top of the keys is meaningless of course. You can also grab compatible keyboard (or buy online) keys that have the F keys printed on them and swap them for some of the keys on this keyboard. The possibilities are endless Read up on it, watch videos and I think you will discover that this keyboard you can program to behave just the way that suits you, the unique you. :) Cheers

The thumb cluster is now even more further away. This keyboard is certainly not for me...
@edakimling133
@edakimling133 3 жыл бұрын
Not true. The thumb cluster was actually designed to give flexibility in this area. You can leave the cluster flat, make it go down...or...for people like you with smaller hands needing the cluster closer, you can make the cluster go up. It becomes significantly closer. The only thing that you do lose I imagine if the thumb cluster goes up, is the tilt for ergonomics. For such case I wonder if it might not be a good idea to include an optional hole for a leg support.

Is the hardware open source??
@edakimling133
@edakimling133 3 жыл бұрын
from what I understand it is open source to the degree that the firmware, QMK runs on it is open source (it's on github and quite popular). So you can modify all aspects of this keyboard. But it does not run something like Ryzen-V if that is what you mean. I think it runs a mobile cortex chip. But for what we need this to do, I think this is good enough for now.

spread it over your lifetime...or to be more realistic, let's say 20 years (making assumption on the longevity of the keyboard)...suddenly it is very cheap...then add up 'good mechanical keyboards' you'd buy otherwise over the years (non open sourced) and compare which is cheaper. I bought few years ago a mechanical corsair. After about a year, one by one the LEDs started to go. There is nothing I can do to fix this. Nothing. And that keyboard was like $150. You buy cheap, you buy twice. And this corsair was supposed to be quality!

These keyboards are pretty cool. But will not be my cup of tea. Actually very old people like me, who has learned 'touch typing' will find it practically impossible to use any other layout other than the 'standard' layout.
@edakimling133
@edakimling133 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is true. You could do it. The company has very nice visual software to help you learn. You can see the layout and learn the keyboard. There is a learning curve for sure. But everyone almost swear it is worth it. Don't shoot yourself down...
