The box flap is another nod to the film, it 'lowers' like the back of the van that Doc had the Delorean in.

I’ve found that you can also peg the Mr. Fusion to the top of the gun as well. I like the look a little more, and it fits better in his hand. (I also call it a Mr. Fusion cannon...)

I tend to pop that Mr Fusion into the weapon port on his left forearm. It makes it look like a watch which is perfect for doing the box art pose. That's how I have him posed up with the right foot on the back of another car. The fishing hook stows away nicely in one of the doors too. Really like this figure. You're not wrong about the legs though. I feel like the back should have been the front and with little changes they could have done that.
