What other files are required in the folder besides the firmware files. It appears the phone is expecting some more files before it starts the process.

the firmware and .cnf file The logs in your tftp server should tell you exactly what the phone wants

But how would the phone know where to look for my laptop using the hub as after all all it is is a hub and not a router

Not really. The reason I use the hub or dumb switch is because of the delay when the ports are down and have to come back up and handshake speeds etc...

hi, wondering what files you have in your firmware folder. i have a 7940 doing the exact same but when i try this my tftp server log states "Request 2 not processed" far as i can see its looking for a certain file. i have the OS79XX.TXT and the 2 other firmware files for POS3-05-0-00 trying to find info on this is a nightmare and i came across your helpfull vid thats been the closest thing to success yet

Hey Jay. Don’t know if this old video is still monitored for comments but I’ll try anyway. I’m wondering if there’s like a “good order” to flash a 7940/60 to latest firmware. I bricked mine from 3.x-something by trying to go straight to 8.13. Than trying to down/upgrading kinda randomly. TFTPD/DHCP-66/150 all working fine. Keeping a good look at the TFTP logs all the time. Mostly getting “file auth error”. - AFAIK happens when upgrading not step by step. Is it just try and error or is it like “start at 4.x than over to 7.1 than 7.x […]” Thx for the video. Kinda demonstrated right away there’s still hope for my old phone. (:

Start with the earliest firmware you can.. SCCP firmware.. then upgrade in tiny baby steps

What do you mean "uploaded"? You might need to use the SCCP 4.x load In your tftp root, you need your Default file as well..

I have a handful of bricked 7965G and 7945G phones and wanna try this process out on them. My problem is they get powered on and flash the lights quickly and then only the speaker phone light stays lit. Have you tried this on these phones?

No, but the process should be the same.. Start from as early of a firmware as you can. SCCP firmware.

Do you also have a DHCP server? That is the other critical part. The DHCP server needs to have options 66 and 150 set to point back to your laptop. OPTION_66=10.10.10.1; OPTION_150=10.10.10.1; And the DHCP server should be dooling out 10.10.10.x/24 addresses

Thats not going to happen. The 7940 is provisioned via TFTP. Unless you have a tftp server on your network, you are pretty much hosed.

Maybe. It has been my experience that trying TFTP to a remote WAN provider is not reliable. You should probably move to a SPA series linksys phone.

what's the minimum bandwidth required to operate this phone in a specified LAN pool? for example if it is 64kbps, then does it mean that it requires complete 64kbps of speed to start using the phone loading its firmware or few kbps of speed is enough for the same? Please revert. Thanks in advance

+skyy love "please revert"?? The phone has a 10/100Mb network interface. How in the hell are you going to have such a slow 64kbps connection? I would not recommend VOIP unless you have a 1mb symmetrical circuit.

a 64kbps circuit might carry one phone maybe. If any other traffic tries to traverse the circuit, the call may fail.
