Billy Packer and Al McGuire. One of the best duos of All Time. You got it all. Humor, superior basketball knowledge and respect for the players, coaches, and game. Wish CBS would've kept them together.

Very few guys if they call and say, we want your kid to come to our school. Here's my list. 1. Al McGuire 2. Dean Smith 3. John Wooden 4. Gary Williams 5. John Thompson 6. Bobby Knight 7. Coach K 8. Brad Stevens 9. Rick Pitino 10. Jimmy V. These coaches transcended the game. You knew your kids was gonna get worked, and be mentally tough. They would be schooled on the fundementals, and learn about life. These guys were great teachers and father figures. They didn't play that not going to class stuff, because many kids were waiting for their opportunity.

Sampson's only Final Four appearance. Ralph got so much hype at UVA and won so many individual honors, but Coach Holland could not recruit around to save his life. Exactly like his top assistant at the time, Dave Odom, later did at Wake with Tim Duncan. Only difference was, Tim never got to the Final Four and only made one Elite 8. I have always said that Duncan got *EXTREMELY* lucky where he was drafted in the NBA, B/C if he went to a rebuilding job or even a bad team, he could had been like a very mediocre version of KG (that is, not leading his team to the playoffs every year only to get knocked off in the first round like what Garnett did his first few years in Minnesota), if his college days were anything to go by.

The problem was that UVA, like other ACC schools (Maryland, NC State) did not give softball academic requirements for scholarship athletes.

Al Wood's first step was just about as quick as James Worthy's.

Al Wood broke records that night. Heels prevailed, but VA had won the previous 2.

This was a national semi-final in 1981. Winner got Indiana for the national title on Monday night. FWIW this was the 2nd game of the doubleheader and to show how different things were then this game was played at 2:15PM ET. Also one of Virginia's starting guards(Jeff Jones) later became the head coach at Virginia

He was before my time as a UNC fan but this was one of the most impressive performances I've seen from a Tar Heel.
@DIMP116 жыл бұрын
The Tar Heels were never able to find a shooting guard the caliber of Mike Pepper in future years.
