Unfortunately, sometimes, by the time ya realize something is off, it may be too late. Best to never even allow yourself to be in a situation At the same time, the 70s and 80s were a time when we didnt even have to lock our doors and ppl were trusted on good will. Killers really did take advantage of that

I am a young indigenous woman from the Gitxsan nation. I grew up in the hazelton area and have always been told to be careful along the highway and was told stories of the horrible things that have happened on this highway. Ramona Wilson was a good friend of my mothers when she went missing. The RCMP almost always brushed indigenous cases under the rug, we still experience it unfortunately. I’m absolutely amazed that you’re covering this, thank you.

There's only so much possible evidence available on any given crime at any given crime scene. Police aren't magicians. There may or may not have been DNA available, and DNA evidence was unknown at the time of many of these crimes, so no reason to preserve that unknown evidence for later testing.

@kltil5082
@kltil5082 4 ай бұрын
Disparity? The only disparity here is it gets way more attention than other strings of homicides. This is spanning over 50 years by the way, you can't even call that a "string" anymore because there's no way most of these cases have anything to do with the others. There isn't anything that inordinate about this, especially given how long the highway is and all the communities along it. Most of the victims aren't even full native, many are barely half and a ton are just straight up white. But if you want attention on something then claim that minorities are being targeted and everyone will get angry and listen. You only have to be 1/8th native to be classed as legally native here. So instead of just listening and believing what you hear, look at the victims themselves. They aren't being targeted for being native, they're being targeting for being young women, and I doubt all of them were just targeted randomly in the first place. We don't know how many of these were domestic and then the body was just dumped near the highway. Do I think a few of them were killed by a serial killer? Yes I do. But some of them were likely killed by men who lived around the area, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the victims knew their perp giving how much partner on partner violence goes on in native communities. The reality is, most native women are being killed by native men in this country. This is no racist conspiracy of a bunch of killers targeting specifically native women near this highway. Which should be obvious since most of the victims here aren't fully native in the first place. And even if they were that wouldn't be crazy because there are a ton of natives who live around there. If you looked at the pictures of the victims, then actually lived near that highway like I have, you'd realize there's no disparity at all. The violence levels are high basically anywhere you go in native areas, but it isn't talked about because discussing non whites having disproportionate amounts of violence isn't allowed apparently. So it's easier for people to act like there's some phantom racist doing these things so it gets talked about. And boy is it ever talked about. I haven't heard the end of it for decades. So forgive me, but I laughed out loud when I read that you think this needed a spotlight and it's not discussed. It's been spotlighted to oblivion for decades. There are more murdered men found in those parts than women, which shouldn't be surprising since men are more likely to be murdered. But everyone just makes this about native women and only highlights that. It's truly bizarre.

I feel like this mini-story will work here, especially cuz I almost never talk about it: When I was little (between like 4 and 6) we had this guy that would come by a few times a year to tune our piano. He was so sweet, and always took an extra few minutes to chat with all of us and teach me a few notes. I learned when I was a teenager that he was an ex-con who was incarcerated for a murder he didn't commit. This was about 15 years ago now in a small town near Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and as far as I know, the actual guy was never caught. Never heard anything about it since then and so far I haven't found anything online

Good god, the Highway of Tears… it’s absolutely atrocious, the way that indigenous women are treated here in Canada. Politicians will sometimes pretend to care about the Highway and talk about reopening the investigation, but never do; or if they do, it’s half-assed and they give up again.

It just needs to stop being swept under the rug. Part of me believes that these women and girls were murdered by people in power. If you’ve ever been questioned by a cop near a rez you know what I’m talking about, the power trip they have over us is scary. And I’m white passing. One time I was being harassed for eating Tim’s in a parking lot at night in winter… the only reason I think I didn’t get in trouble was because the guy’s superior knew who I was because my great grandpa had been grand chief for years before. And my grandma was on band council… and he went to school with my mom. Rez’s are small and unfortunately our rez police department has a lot more white cops than anything… and in their heads were nothing but trouble.

Which is mostly yellow journalism. Read The Devil in the White City and you’ll see a lot of insinuation, but very little outright details until the end. That’s because there’s basically no evidence he killed more than three people. In fact, one of the people he supposedly killed (the woman he bought the pharmacy from) turned out to not only not be dead but she actually outlived him. After selling the pharmacy she simply moved down the street.

Kris your documentary covers have saved me. I was walking home from school with my friend and we saw a car drive by, where i walked her too was right next to a busy road so i didnt think anything of it. When i started walking back after i walked her to her spot.. the car was slowly driving by me, i remembered one of your covers and i remembered exactly what i should do in that situation, i ran across the busy street, (no cars were going) and ran to the gas station down the street, the car followed me there. So i ran across the street and into the library, i called my stepdad while hiding in the library. The guy drove in and parked right by the door, and walked in. I hid in plain sight, keeping the man in my sight and the door. I called my stepdad and explained what had happend since my mom didnt answer, he told me to walk home, and he gave his phone to my mom. I was talking to her and she started walking, but the man kept getting closer and closer to my hiding spot.. so i got up and sprinted down the street with a speed i didnt know i had. I was crying and panting, im not very athletic and i might have asthma and ran all the way home. And i often see that car, driving down my street. I told my mom that i was scared, and then everyone on my street knew. Havent seen the car ever since, if i hadnt remembered your cover? I probably wouldve ran home or to my friends and put them or me in even more danger. Thank you kris.

25:39 pickton lived 20 minutes away?!? As a woman that must be such a freaky thing to learn. Especially as I understand he was in the country side so it’s totally different than being 20 minutes close in a big city. That’s so scary

While I know about these cases along the Highway of Tears and see the signs along the roadside all the time, it still never fails to shock me every time I hear the names of all these cities I've lived in and visited. It's horrible that these women and their families still haven't received justice in their cases.

Thank you for shedding some light on our missing Native sisters ❤ my friend’s daughter is currently missing, from our small Canadian town that’s on the border we get a lot of truckers and tourists/travellers through our area. The trans-Canadian highway runs through our town and reserves that are also rural so it’s scary how easy it is for someone to go missing. 😮‍💨

You showed my aunty Monica jacks photo but didn’t talk about her she went missing in 1978 riding her bike just out side of meritt bc and 40 years later her case was solved finally. The highway of tears has one sister who can rest in peace as we found her killer and he has been put to justice. Just wish you could have talked about it. Anyways from a poco kid I’m proud to say I share a birth province with you.

As a fellow Canadian, I would love it if you did a deep dive on Gary Ridgeway and his possible connections to the Highway of Tears. That guy has destroyed so many women's lives that I actually don't find it unlikely at all that he could have been responsible for many of the earlier ones. Also Israel Keys, some info on his travels in Canada would be interesting to compare with disappearances in rural BC.
