1. Letter from Danny Perkins, President of Backstage Distributions, dated July 4th 1998, stating how he was introduced to Eddie Van Halen and his personal guitar tech Zeke Clark, by Randy Bachman on August 20th, 1986…
"During my 20 years of acquiring rock and roll memorabilia for my personal collection, many Hard Rock Cafe worldwide locations, and the Guitar Hall of Fame’s 50 million dollar collection, I have certain favorite pieces. Edward Van Halen’s Kramer “Stryper” has been one of the top 10 pieces I have ever had the pleasure to own and play daily since 1988.
On August 20 1986 I met up with my old pal Randy Bachman who was opening up for the Van Halen 5150 tour. I was introduced to Edward Van Halen and his personal guitar tech Zeke Clark and shown his rig and guitars. There were several strypers some with 5150 painted on them and others without. Zeke mentioned that they were all handmade by Eddie at the Kramer factory in NJ. I asked several questions about the specs of the guitar and was shown one that had just split at the headstock the day before and was going to be returned to Kramer. I was also shown the back of the headstock of his main #1 guitar with the exact same damage, which had been repaired. Eddie had just given one of his guitars to Randy Bachman’s son in trade for a hat and later the two groups signed up as supporters for a new non-profit organization Bikers Against Drunk Drivers.
It wasn’t until a couple years later when the Kramer company had troubles that I was offered the very Kramer Stryper with the busted headstock I had seen backstage earlier, by James Paul DeCesare, Foreman of Assembly Kramer Music Products. I had a choice of several guitars that were at the plant for repairs etc., including the “Hot For Teacher” Kramer, but chose the road piece.
The serial number is C5150 and is one of only 5 made for the road. It cannot be confused from the promotion giveaway models (36) because of it’s straight headstock, 6 bolt backplate, and the pickup/bridge mounted directly to the body. Also exclusive is the RC network fitted to the volume pod to keep the tone even at all volumes.
I acquired the stage used Peavey 5150 amplifier directly from Jay Tashjian Analog Engineer of Peavey Sept 12 1996. The amp had been blown by Eddie on tour and replaced by the company. It still has Eddie Van Halen’s personal levels marked directly on the amp face as well as other notes with black marker and tape. The amp can be seen in Guitar World Magazine showing his entire rig.
Together these items make a historic display of one of the world’s top 3 guitar players of all time. While on display at my office at the Montreal Hard Rock Cafe, the guitar was played by many of the world’s top guitar players and entertainers.

That’s what poor people say who can only afford a Squier. The truth is the best gear will make you sound good, that’s why guitar shops won’t let you touch the most expensive guitars and why the pros won’t let you touch their stuff.

@@PIlotrcm Stupid comment. Eddie recorded a good amount of VH 1 and 2 on a homemade guitar worth about 200 bucks. The point of my original comment is that virtually anyone else could plug into Eddie's gear and it ain't gonna sound like Eddie, as with the poster of this video. Sure...go ahead and get great gear; but the player makes the gear come alive, not visa versa.

I watched the video to find out what the Stryper was. Never heard that either. I have a cool old Kramer Striker, I thought maybe it was a typo. And where the fretboard is worn, is kind of to close to the actual frets, then it’s clean on the fretboard where the fingers mostly come in contact (middle of the fret). That might just be a cheap/but cool replica. 😝

I’ve been analyzing Eddies guitars over the years especially the Kramer’s and I’ve never seen or heard of this specific guitar, ed had a bunch of custom Kramer’s built 1983-1989 years and this guitar was most likely a backup on the 5150 tour, I’d say this because the stripe job looks very similar to the 5150 Guitar that Eddie used from 1984 - 1989 on tour and in the studio [ his most famous Kramer ]. The strange thing is that It’s really worn out, after all Eddie only used the 5150 and rarely broke a string during a live show. Definitely not used on the F.U.C.K tour.... he had moved on to Ernie Ball MM guitars.

I was wondering if you could answer a question about that guitar based on your knowledge. Do you think the story behind that guitar is legitimate. A lot of things don't add up to me. That guitar is coming up in an auction in New York this spring. And I don't think the story they have is the right one. Was this curious on your insight, being someone who's done their homework.

@Eric: Wrong. The Frankenstein guitar (which lots of folks call the Frankenstrat now) wasn't a Kramer at all. It was assembled from a Strat-style body and neck that were made by Charvel. The humbucker was a PAF from a 335. The Floyd was added after the fact too. Lots of other oddities created the scarred and patchwork appearance as well: the chopped pickguard with the vol pot moved, the nailed-on quarter, the eyehooks in place of conventional strap holders, at least 3 different paintjobs, etc. There have been a few replicas of it too, including one made at the Kramer factory with a Kramer neck (banana headstock) that Eddie posed with for an ad in guitar mags, but the Frankenstein predates his involvement with Kramer by many years. Most VH fans call guitars like the one in this video "the 5150" after the reflective decals reading that behind the trem on the most famous example. However, there are several different versions that Eddie played. For example, the real "5150" was a Pacer and had a straight (not angled) pickup. Another version had a Steinberger TransTrem installed on it. Another one reads "1984" instead of "5150." None of them are the Frankenstein though, and anyone who says something like that doesn't know what the hell he's talking about or is just making shit up.

Yeah ,yeah,Frankenstein, Frankenstrat. I know about Eddie's original version with the Charvel neck. I commented that calling any form of this guitar the "stryper" is just a goofy made up name.This guy is obviously playing one of the Kramer copies that Eddie might have used way before the F.U.C.K tour.Eddie was using the Music Man VH by then.You flat out calling me wrong is wrong. I didn't need you to write me a book about what i already know, but at least you may have schooled some of the other ass clowns like this guy who play VH without a pick. Ha, now you got me writing my own book to answer your book! Anyway Van Halen is awesome. This guy is a tool...

It's the player, not the guitar. Give him a $90 Squier and he's gonna sound just about the same.

Nah man, the guitar-amp combination is pretty insane. Squiers aren't that bad but this guitar is something else. Not denying that your ability to play is the most important thing, though.

My deceased best Friend (Marc David Moskowitz 1968-2004) who's Family owned the now gone,and legendary Manny's 48th St. Music store in NYC actually owned 3 of Eddie's actual guitars. Marc's striper was all dirty and beat up like this one ! Manny's ,back in the early -mid 80's was ,I believe the biggest Kramer dealer in the USA ,so My buddy had some juice with EVH ! I played the striper many times , it was as beast ! His ,had the routing to the neck single coil ,that was not even hooked up! The first one he got was actually stolen ,while he was at military school only 15 years old. He was so utterly devastated ,and Eddie heard what happened,& They were able to get him another one ,thank Eddie & Kramer! He also owned,and I'm pretty sure his Father still has it ,a Destroyer body that was hack routed ,and sawed ,and had writing inside from the Kramer guys that said "Hi Eddie" . It was just like the one on the cover of WACF. Not like the poser Charvel guitars they are selling on Ebay for like $20 grand nowadays !

I met Zeke in 88 at the hotel, day before the MOR show. We played name that VH tune in his room, he on the 1984 guitar and me on the (actual) 5150 with the Kramer neck bolted on. It has a WAY sloppier bar and the quarter under the bridge. Every second of those 20 minutes, till Eddie called and was chewing him out, is burned into my brain till the day I die. Still have the card he pulled from a magazine with his hand written instructions to get my passes the next day and the Crew Pass he gave me. Like a dope, In put the EVH pick back on the guitar but the next day a roadie have me one of Mikey's.

Did you mean Eddie's original Frankenstrat with a Kramer neck? The 5150 didn't have a quarter under the bridge....the Frankie did.
@ROOKTABULA
@ROOKTABULA 2 ай бұрын
@@pasqualeporpora Ed never took the Frank on the road by that time. But the guitar had "5150" on it, it was a Kramer and the quarter was beside the low E side of the bridge.

You sure all the grime is from Eddie or from this Perkins guy who played it daily from 88 to 98 (according to the letter in the description) math says 10 years of daily play is more than 2 years of Eddie use?

The pickup was angled to either match the design of a stratocaster, or to line up the pole pieces to the strings. There will be no noticeable change in sustain and no added high frequencies. If anything the 6th string will be louder and bassier because the magnet is closer to the center of the string.

It is in the fingers some, but knowing how to set that old amp means a lot too. Eddie turned the amp on 10 along with all the tone controls. He used a Variac to lower the volume. He used 25 watt Celestions with hemp speaker cones, 6CA7 tubes for more headroom in his amp. His Variac was his Volume control. Pickup in his strat was from and ES 335 and potted with wax for no squeel, and a 500 ohm volume control. Not all in the fingers. Never and overdrive pedal .

I think he angled the pickups because when eddie originally tinkered with his 1st fender, the black and white one, he used a Gibson humbucker to replace the fender single coil and it wasn't F spaced. So he angled it so the poles would be lined up under the strings.

i read an old guitar player from BITD interview that eddie supposedly said he angled the gibson humbucker like that on the original Frankenstrat because the string spacing on fender is wider and angling the narrower gibson humbucker made it so there was some magnet (whether it be screw poles or slug poles) under each string.

I thought PU slanted location was because EVH used a Gibson PU with a Fender string spacing, and had to angle the PU to match the pole pieces to lie directly under the strings ( or as EVH said “Then best I could”👍🏻🎸😇 The strap loops were that way because EVH used brass key chain holders on his straps
