Just wanted to say that your VH covers are the best I've ever heard. There was a SWING in Eddie's playing. I don't know how else to describe it. You have that same swing. Also on a side note, I recently saw a video of you performing "I'm The One" with The Classic Rock Show, and you reached for your whammy bar....... and didn't have one. That must have been a moment of sheer terror. Still pulled it off like a pro. Got my tickets for the upcoming Hershey, PA show.

I remember when it came out, I was a kid in high school, and wanted one so bad. I ended up getting a couple Wolfgangs when I got older, and could afford them. Eventually I bought an Axis in the same color as the one in the video, new in 2003. I bought another in 2007, in tobacco sunburst. I will never let them go. While not exactly the same as Ed's version, they are close enough for me and I love them. Great video Pete, brought back a ton of memories from when I was a kid.

Pete i've read that he went with that air gap pickup design because like you were talking about pickups can be de-magnetized. And it was around that same time he recorded Poundcake and using an electric drill can de-magnetize the pickups. He already had that intro down several years before he recorded the song because i've heard it before on older mid 80's rough recordings. So he was probably aware of the effect the electric drill had on pickups in a negative way. Great video, i'm such a VH nerd i love watching everything about the history of the band and Ed.

Left everything else stock. THE funnest guitar I’ve ever played. I put it over my knee unplugged (It showed in in tune and set up decently out of the box), and it sounded great. Plugged it in, and with the stock pickups, it sounded like an electric razor. Ergo, the pickup swap. My FLGS knows my gear, and what I like, and made the perfect recommendation based on knowing me for so long.

Hi Pete - just a note on "3-axis CNC"; I've been a luthier for thirty years, and work in design for marine and associated things that use CNC. A 3-axis CNC is pretty much any basic CNC. Left-right, forward-backward are two of those axes (like an Etch-A-Sketch) and the third being up-down. At least in this context. Even though CNC was fairly new to production at the time (don't get me talking about Matsumoku, etc!) the real trick here was copying an existing part and using that as the basis for a programme that would move the CNC when making copies. Coordinate measuring (CMM) just didn't exist outside of super expensive industry, military, scientific, etc. which is how you take samples from an object for developing a model. The history of this small point would be an interesting video in itself, albeit for CNC dorks like me. It makes modern structured laser light scanning of objects and 5-axis CNC (which is in my game) truly space age by comparison. A lot of manufacturers were still relying on ganged copy carvers back then, which were literally a row of machines cutting parts with the positions all being guided by a pilot semi-automatically over an origin template. I imagine that this would have needed some proper programming gymnastics by the CNC coders of the time, since programs were still fundamentally developed by hand coding. Crazy stuff man. Also, that "gun stock oil" would have been Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil or similar. It's great for raw necks.

Thanks for sharing your guitar with the world, Simon!! Pete - spot-on with capturing Ed's spirit in your playing! As Ed said in the past: "You do a good me!"

What a killer 🤘🏻 story behind a guitar 🎸 ya bought/got from someone dude! Wasn't a huge fan of the shape when I was younger (16) and a 'newer' player. Lol funny isn't it 🤣😂, you get older (39 now) and a seasoned player/Musician (24+yrs) & the shapes + styles you weren't into, you grew into!?!? Never thought I'd own a Music Man guitar, own John Petrucci Signature Mystic Dream 6 String, definitely one of the best 6-strings I've ever played. One of these (doesn't matter about the year) has been on my "want list" for a little over 8 yrs now lol soon, I'm sure I'll find one. Lol just within a reasonable number is just the other factor too Great Vid buddy 👍🏻🤘🏻

I loved what you said at the end - I connect with this era on a deep level. That iconic Music Man ad that you show here represents the very beginning of my guitar journey, when I started playing 30+ years ago. I didn't ever own of these guitars, but what that ad represents for my life journey learning guitar through magazines like you said, and seeing this ad constantly... it's hugely important to me. It was hanging up in my room, and the '91 Van Halen show (Milwaukee WI) was my first major concert I attended. Aside from the nostalgia of this ad, was the radio ad for the concerts ... saying "other shows sold out in 6 minutes" ... Well sheesh, I wasn't going to miss out! My aunt told me, for when tickets went on sale via phone - "Don't call the Ticketron in your city, call the # for a different city's Ticketron, so you will be able get through!"... and I did. Unforgettable. I bought the $35 (back then) tie dyed VH logo Tshirt and went to the show with my best friend, just at the start of my sophomore year of high school. Just perfect. I would love to play one of these guitars someday. Your intro really grabbed me too, thanks for all your work on this video!

That playing at the beginning sounds just like Eddie came back to life. Very awesome job sir! As far as guitars, I can't help it, I'm a huge Kramer fan. I've just always loved Kramer guitars. From Eddie, to Mick Mars.

Pete, I just want to thank you for channel, love of EVH, your guitar tech wizardry and the honest delivery of your KZbin videos. There is a genuineness about you that transcends the everyday slapstick, mugging for the camera, wanking theatrics of other KZbinrs. For the enjoyment you given me, my sincerest hope is that the economics of KZbin provide you and your family a financially secure standard of living and your vocation and avocation are one in the same. Take care my friend and be well!!

Pete just nails EVH.. its almost spooky. Totally remember this ad too - Guitar For the Practicing Musician was how I learned guitar, music theory, modes, etc.. probably the most important piece of literature (musically speaking) in my youth by far. Cheers to Andy Aldort and the rest of the staff!

I still remember my very first Guitar Player Magazine; October 1977! Todd Rundgren, Gary Richrath. I'd never heard of them before that. But after reading cover-to-cover, I bought every month's issue up until around 1988. Still bought an occasional issue here and there, along with Guitar World in the latter years. Always couldn't wait to devour the next one. But there was also Popular Mechaincs, Mechanics Illustrated, Discover, Omni, Tales from the Dark Side, National Lampoon, Mad........ to keep that burgeoning brain stirred. 🙂
