Dani, I was 16 and at this concert.. Had Tears in my eyes when he finished this song.. Even at the age of 16, I was still aware that this was a love song, yet Elvis wasn't singing for or to a woman, 'he was reaching out to God to bring him home.. I get tears just thinking about that.. Yes, I have gone through periods of anger as to why others didn't try to get through to him..

you know they did try right? point is that no one could stop Elvis from creating his own damnation, you can't tell a 42 year old man "hey don't do that or no that's not good for you" that easy.. also Elvis was depressed and tired.. the drugs, technically medicine numbed the pain

This song is the perfect interpretation: even with his health totally decadent, it was the proof that God never abandoned Elvis, did not embarrass him, no matter how bad his health was; God helped him to take everything out of his voice and show the world what was truly a divine talent. Exciting ... I can listen for hours and cry for hours, I will never find meaning in the music of any other artist that goes beyond this interpretation of Elvis. Hugs from Brazil!

He squeezed every ounce of that God given talent he had in him to give the crowd the performance he knew they wanted to see and the performance standard he had for himself. Him, Micheal, Freddie had that pure God given gift of voice and performance and they tried to give that gift to the public to the highest standard till they died. The more i see Elvis' performances the more respect i have for him.

Someone once said that this song is meant for a love that hasn't been seen for a long, lonely time, but on this particular night, Elvis seemed to be crying out to a much higher power. What a shame to lose him at just 42 with so much left to give, but then again I feel like he gave us all he had of himself. I still get so emotional when I think about it, yet I'm always comforted by remembering these two lines from the epitaph on his tombstone.. "God saw that he needed some rest and Called him home to be with Him." RIP Elvis. The world should could use a little Elvis about now.

Beautifully summarized, Dani. Every time I watch that performance, I can't help but shed a tear. For Elvis, nothing was more important than performing for his fans. In hindsight, perhaps it would have been best if he had canceled his shows, gone on hiatus, sought treatment and tended to his health. But as a dedicated performer, I don't think Elvis allowed himself to take such a break.

Dani Atkinson and everyone who posted comments! If I could a little back story! Rehab in 77 was nothing like it is now! Elvis was hospitalized for no less then 7 time, in Vegas and in Memphis, in the end, his nurse in TN was hired to be with him, these hospital stays were to ( help with his addiction) but he was getting them there as well! there were a few people who really tried to intervene, Priscilla was trying but her contact with him was made limited and begged him to cancel the final tour. There were 2 fired bodyguards that wrote a book in 76 about what was happening with Elvis and it just crushed him! they stated it was written to try and motivate him to make the changes he needed to make! Ginger Alden his girlfriend at the time of his death! I’m not sure how much she did as she had moved out of Graceland prior to his death. And as you stated that maybe there were people who could of done more ( The Memphis Mafia) it really isn’t controversial these guys took there orders from the Colonel no matter the cost get him on stage! So there were factions in the camp fighting to do what was right and others who he was there meal ticket, Elvis new who cared and who didn’t! That alone must have been hurtful, with all he did for them. He was so broken and so lonely by this point he had no passion and the fight was gone! Maybe if earlier on he took more control, Lisa Marie and Priscilla had multiple wrongful death suites filed! Enough of all that just wanted to give you some in site of the back drop of what was happening! That book really devastated him from what his fans would think! In the end we were blessed to have him and seen him! The greatest entertainer ever!! My anger comes from the ones who really tried to help and were pushed out, what if? What if Elvis could of helped himself?Hope this is not rambling but a lot of facts I felt I had to be said! You’re keeping him relevant and as a huge fan I thank you! Let’s keep passing this remarkable man to other generations! God bless, you’re a talent in your own right! Great job!! By the way My Mother was a huge Elvis fan, I was seven or eight years old at the time and she took me to see him in New Haven Connecticut, I still have the ticket stub! I just remember him being awesome, Thanks for reading and again for all you do! Ted

Great job Dani, unbelievably I don’t think his voice even peaked. They toured him way too much. He was most definitely worn out and should have been in a hospital. The day he died he was supposed to be in Portland Maine. You ask questions that I have debated with others for 40 years. His mother could have saved him but she died in 1958. His manager and father cared more about the money. His girlfriends were much younger and Priscilla was gone. I know he was in the hospital several times between 75 and 77 which they said was exhaustion. Also, the nurses would sneak him whatever he wanted. I think it comes down to he had to want it and I think he just had too much power. No one told Elvis no. Maybe that was the problem, he had fame beyond imagination. The fact that this is debated to this day tells you something. Great analysis. He was King 🤴 for a reason and it was not self-proclaimed.

His commitment to delivering this song demonstrates his loyalty and true love which is " the song." You know when you love something so much how you take extra precaution to protect and preserve it because it is of such great value to you,. Dani did a good job at comparing how he was before he sang the song, while he was singing the song and after he sang the song and to his dyeing day he never mistreated a song. He would not and could not forsake "the song." It is his love of the song that people, universally, respond to so I appreciate seeing how strong of a relationship he has with a vehicle that gives so many people so much joy and appreciation to his dying days. That says a lot. "The song" is Elvis's spoke person.

Reach for that moon & star in your life ok ! Elvis gave me that chance & I have gone on to work & tour with almost every major Rock Bands & some very cool Country artists !! He wanted to see his Fans Once more before he left us. If you have not heard Wayne Newtons The Letter, take a min to listen to the song Wayne bought & believed was words to a song Elvis was writing ! In truth Elvis left it where he new it would be found & get to his Fans. Wayne did a great job but it was his words to his God ! Elvis so loved his fans that he shared his conversation with himself & God ! He wanted us to know how much he loved us all but he was done with it all & asked God to bring him home ! He gave so much of himself to the world & his fans that well Dani you get so tired ! You hit the nail on the head. This song, in general, just hits different. Then, knowing this was one of the last songs he ever sang, pushes it even further. This version breaks me every time I hear it. He has meant more to me than I could ever put in to words, especially since I hadn't even been born yet. I performed this version at my first show back, after my mother passed away. She is the one who introduced me to Elvis. I'm forever thankful for that. Very beautifully said. I read all the comments and agree with most. It's all recognizable. What else would he have done if he had lived longer? I'm from the Netherlands and as a young child I saw this Elvis in Concert video on TV as a memorial after his death. It made a huge impression on me as a child. Since then I still often watch and listen to his concerts all my life. I'm now 58 and still sometimes sit up late into the night watching elvis clips. What is it about this man that keeps you so involved? Elvis has touched me all my life. We can only respect and be grateful. I'm not very religious but you would hope to see people you love again at some point

He so quickly slipped away from us. He had so much more to give. Loved around the world for his velvety voice. A one of a kind. He could have sung for many more years if he had proper help with his health. Add him to the list of famous people taken too early. In those days I don't remember drugs talked about much...I mean I knew about marijuana and LSD but I thought that was just being taken by hippies in communes. For someone Elvis's age to be on drugs was a surprise to me and even a bigger surprise that it contributed to his death.

First, thank you for the in-depth review...it came from the heart. There's a lot of things people don't know about this tour & his final years. Elvis would actually perform this song once more in on June 25th, then ending the tour on the 26th. As for his health, it was NOT just addiction to medications. There were genetic conditions that ran in the family. This man was born with a twisted colon, which began acting up later in life causing him to retain fluids & toxins. He had a heart almost 3 times the average size. He battled glaucoma since 1970. He battled depression, anxiety & insomnia his whole life. That's just the basics. Now enter the people around him. An evil manager, Tom Parker who didn't care how he got to the stage, as long as he got on stage. Elvis' Dr. trying to treat these progressive health issues which then eventually included liver problems. People don't even realize that Elvis was handed a contract on June 1st in Macon, Ga. for this concert tour. That gave this man 16 days to prepare for live tv cameras for the first time in over 4 years. Yeah, he was sick, but he wasn't weak....when Elvis got nervous he would stutter his words & look for support. As far as I'm concerned, Elvis did a fantastic job here in front of CBS & I love watching his concerts. BTW, if it wasn't for the fluid retention, Elvis would have looked notably leaner. There's a lot more to the story, but I got to get to bed. PEACE!

Just want to say, "Hi". And add that what Mike O'Reilly says, it what learned after hearing that Elvis had died. I was 12yrs old and in the UK when I heard he'd passed, BBC Radio 2 & Radio Luxembourg played Elvis songs all night. I heard that Tom Parker was not a very nice person, & that those that attempted to help Elvis, suddenly lost thier jobs (possibly from Mr Tom Parker convincing Elvis that they weren't 'really' his friends). However, as I was 12, and this info had to "cross the pond" to get to me, I'm willing to concede that I could have some of that wrong. 🖖💞🙏🕯️🙏💞

The bloating you see that Elvis has right now it's not caused from the pills. It is caused from heart failure. I have been a nurse for 43 years. The Colonel would not let him not perform. He was known to have said he didn't care. He wanted Elvis on the stage no matter what. This song took a lot of air to accomplish. How Elvis was able to sing it so wonderfully is a miracle in itself!

Very good reaction. Good performance of yourself as well. How many off us wish they could have gone back in time and reach him to actually help him . There were, by the way some inner circle friends who tried to tell him to straighten out his life. They ended up leaving his circle and writing a book called “Elvis: what happened?” Elvis saw this as betrayal and we all have to decide for ourselves. I’ve heard both sides of the story. Not judging anyone. There are other gems from this concert performance including “hurt“… “How great thou art” and “it’s now or never“, all of which showcase his powerful vocal range.

Thank you so much! I'm sure that people tried to help, I just wish someone could have intervened and made the outcome different. I know it would have had to come from Elvis' own personal will to want to get better. It's just so hard to imagine the reality of it. So sad. I have to pick up that book, but as you said, we'll never know the real truth.

I’m from Louisville, and in spring of 77, Elvis has a show at Freedom Hall,at 7:30. During the afternoon,he was having lunch in his suite, and whomever was with him,got called away momentarily. When they returned, Elvis had either passed out or fallen asleep sitting up,and was face down in his bowl of soup. The security staff came running, and got Elvis away from the table, and laid him in bed. Dr. Nick came in to tend to him. Suddenly there was violent banging at the suite door, and in came Tom Parker, his manager. He walked in the bedroom, glanced at Elvis, came up to LarryGellar and said,” Listen to me. The only thing that matters, is that man is on that stage tonight.Nothing else is important. He sings whTever it takes....”

Ive never been a big Elvis fan but I do know that his significance and importance to the history of rock and roll can't be denied or questioned! Few performances I have seen/watched in 56 years have brought tears to my eyes quite like this performance of Unchained Melody! You can see that Elvis was tired, sick and struggling to keep it going for his fans.. For at least a little while, Elvis was a bright beacon in this otherwise dark world and we miss the light that emanated from him dearly! The world shall not see the likes of him again!
