I completely understand where you're coming from. But for me, after playing all three of the past games, and after falling in love with the characters, I wanted badly for a more emotion driven game, and even a darker game. I also felt that Uncharted 3 hit some speed bumps when it came to the Uncharted formula. This led me to hope that Naughty Dog would switch it up a little for the final game. Ultimately, i got exactly what i wanted out of uncharted 4. I give it a 9/10: too much box pushing. I really appreciate the different perspective here! Thanks for the great review!
@JuanZiAmaya8 жыл бұрын
Good review but you actually missed the point about Nate's motivations. He DID want the treasure, you can see that throughout the emotions of his face, and the subtext in his dialogues, that's why this game is so great, it achieves making the characters feel emotional not by telling you.
@jman28568 жыл бұрын
I actually appreciated the darker tonal shift as I felt it served the characters very well and helped them evolve and grow up. Uncharted 4 is all about growing up from the past and I'd say the tone helps to establish on what Nathan Drake is feeling. This is still Uncharted just grown up and I think that's brilliant.
@Icipher3538 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. U4 is the best game in the series because Drake finally evolves from a two dimensional Indiana Jones wannabe into an actual character with a character arc and actual motivations beyond treasure (although you could argue that the evolution of Nathan Drake started in U3).

I personally feel like the game managed to blend the darker tone and the lighthearted tone pretty well, it did make sense with the context of Nathan being older and married and stuff. Regardless, great review.
@Juiceboxjerry8 жыл бұрын
I think you're kind of overstating the tonal shift that takes place here. Sure, UC4 is a little more heavy and grounded than past games, but they started wrestling with a lot of this stuff in Uncharted 3. If anything, I think the game is guilty of retreading familiar territory (with the strained Nate-Elena relationship) rather than taking it in a new - some might say 'unwanted' - direction. It's still very much a fun, quippy, globe-trotting Uncharted game. Personally I think the more grounded storytelling made the actual treasure hunt a hundred times more interesting than past games. In other Uncharteds, I really only cared about what exciting new locale/set-piece was coming next. Whereas in this one, the locations, and incredibly detailed environments, all made it feel like I was actually tracking down this long lost pirate treasure. I became really invested in the story of Henry Avery and (eventually) Libertalia. I don't think there's any doubt that the Uncharted world (and everything that comes along with it) is currently at odds with the direction Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley are trying to take Naughty Dog. Which is why the storytelling may have felt a little uneven at times, making those "real" moments stand out a bit more. They're probably pretty happy to put this series to bed and move on to whatever project they have coming next. They still made an amazing fucking game, though (imo). It's funny, you talked a lot about how heavy the game was, and how it lacked some of the light-hearted fun of past games, but I honestly can't remember the last time I smiled more while playing a video game.
@Icipher3538 жыл бұрын
Very true. Druckmann and Straley's Uncharted is very different (and a good deal darker) than Amy Hennig's version, and given that D&S have two massive critical and commercial hits under their belt, one presumes that they will be driving the direction of the studio for the foreseeable future. As someone who loves the relentless bleakness of TLoU, I have no complaints.

People are going to dislike this review because it doesn't immediately praise the game or give it a 10/10 right from the beginning, but I appreciate that you actually criticized the game constructively rather than just say "I don't like it and it's shit". Excellent review. I just finished the game myself after playing through the first three games for the first time as a marathon of sorts, and I absolutely loved it. But I was gawking at the visuals under most circumstances, and have yet to play The Last of Us for comparison's sake. Is a perfect game? Of course not, but the sheer level of fluidity and scale makes it a fantastic experience.

I definitely agree with this. Nathan's life has changed over the course of this franchise, so it's expected that change would be reflected in the tone as well. Though one thing I haven't heard other people complain about is that certain parts of this game turn into climbing simulator 2016. it looks and feels amazing as you swing around, and they Incorporated some puzzles into the climbing aspects. But I really wish the pacing had gone towards gunplay or stealth a little more

Actually, to be fair, Uncharted 4 is actually kinda darker and more "realistic". This time, Nathan wants to calm down, have a family, stop being a thief and away from the danger. On one hand, I really understand and respect that because it is very, very dangerous but on the other hand, he misses it because of the adrenaline. But at the same time, the game also portrays and handles its light-hearted tone quite perfectly. At looks like Naughty Dog wants to make this game more appealing to be more "realistic", so to speak (forget how many gameplay and story elements are completely unrealistic) because Naughty Dog respects its fans and I think this is meant to be more for the fans who grew up with the series and grew older. I would say Naughty Dog is both a mix between light hearted and a few points of being more "realistic" and I really, really enjoyed it. Even though this is clearly almost like Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones which lots of treasures and secrets and locations that would have been found easily with the use of the internet or with the help of a few good historians, or it does not matter why anyone would ever leave clues to their hidden treasures where their mean focus is the keep it hidden from everyone or forget how much Nathan Drake is probably a mass murderer with all those people he killed ... the point of the series is the theme of adventure. (and also some cases of reality too ... history has proven to be wrong before)
@CasualShinji8 жыл бұрын
After three games, doing the same "frivolity" and lighthearted 'will they, won't they' between Drake and Elena in game 4 would've felt utterly complacent and boring. It already sort of did in Uncharted 3. I liked that they decided to put some actual meat to these characters this time around, despite them still not being that deep. Sure, there's a tonal shift, but it merely consists of these characters just being slightly more believable now. In the previous games, when you got to the dramatic/emotional moments it felt very throw-away, because the next gameplay section you're running, jumping, and shooting like nothing happened. In Uncharted 4 there's actually some weight to these scenes, and the characters have emotional moments that carry over through the rest of the game. And it never felt like a detriment to the summer action blockbuster experience. It's similar in that way to a Spider-Man 2, True Lies, or The Incredibles.
@DexterNewton328 жыл бұрын
I liked some of the more serious real elements. As great as escapism and lighthearted Indiana Jones like treasure hunting with lots of comedy is, I always found that the fun and snarky parts are made so much better in games (or even movies) when there are some occasional serious tones in between. The issue with Elena and Nate came up in previous games already, and I guess it makes sense as a matter of trust when you think about all the stuff they have done together. Same goes for Sams story and what he did (no spoilers). I think ultimately the conclusion of the game was also pretty good. It had a very great Epilogue wrapping things up nicely and I think one of the core themes here was one of mutual trust among friends of partners, another one was that sometimes you have to let go of things to embrace new ones, and then there was the conclusion of while you might have to move on, it doesn't mean you have to leave your old life behind altogether. I still think there is a fair amount of escapism and rather unrealistic fast conflict resolving in the game that is typical for the lightheartedness of a series like Uncharted, but I appreciated that it felt a little more real and emotional at times. That made the game really great for me.

I respect your opinion and I applaud you for not being afraid to voice it against majority view. But I don`t think an Uncharted game needs to be light hearted, cheeky and bright to be Uncharted. Sure that`s what most people have known Nathan Drake and the tone of the series to be, but just like the players that have been playing the series for years now since UC1, the series needs to grow and evolve, and so do the characters in the story. Nathan Drake today isn`t the young and naive treasure hunter as he was in UC1 almost 10 years ago, and he shouldn`t be. A character should have character development for the plot to have any depth and drama to be enticing. We as the players have witnessed and experienced the romantic rollercoaster ride between Nathan and Elena over the entire course of the series, just to see them finally get together and marry in this final installment. Nathan wants to settle down and start a family, but he`s also torn between taking care of his brother. Given the natural progression of the plot and characters, it`s simply natural to see the series taking a slightly more mature, serius and darker tones about family and loyalty. I`m happy that the lead designers aren`t afraid to take chances and lead the game in a slightly different approach instead of playing it safe and having the same exact winning formula. I would honestly be bored if UC4 is the same bright, happy-go-lucky and carefree game that UC2 and UC3 are.
@karankamath52158 жыл бұрын
I feel that the darker tone and the marital problems were slightly necessary. There was a subtext that he did desire the treasure, but he needed to tell himself that he had moved past their life. I found this new style more compelling than it would have been if they had kept the same style as they had for the last few games, acting as if nothing had changed in Nate's life.

This review is spot on. I love this franchise and consider The Last of Us one of the best games ever. But U4 left me feeling pretty flat tbh. Far too much mundane gameplay with a serious over abundance of ledge jumping. It is still a quality title, but more like an 8/8.5 IMO, not all the 10s I've been seeing it get.
@Hunterese1238 жыл бұрын
+sammyflinders Same can be said about the other Uncharted's, it's a fun light hearted romp. Naughty Dog just improved on the formula and took some elements from Last of Us and you get Uncharted 4.
@sammyflinders8 жыл бұрын
+Hunterese That's where we disagree. I recently played thru all the Uncharted games again in the remastered collection, and tbh they had considerably less of the monotonous ledge hopping/jumping segments. I personally feel this game stumbles with its pacing in various ways and is a step back in this regard. As Elder points out it has a lot of expository moments that don't exactly make you eager to replay it.
@Hunterese1238 жыл бұрын
sammyflinders I replayed the collection too, and Uncharted 3 to me is still the weakest. The story was disjointed when you hit the ship graveyard part, which added nothing to the story, and the pacing was inconsistent in that regard. The pacing for Uncharted 4 seemed a lot more logical and made sense

I'm not done with the game yet but I mostly agree with your review, this is one Uncharted game I doubt I'd replay more than a couple times because it just doesnt have that feel-good factor and is riddled with too many scenes that break the flow of gameplay, I cant shoot for 5 minutes without having to stop, get on a jeep and drive around or solve some busy work puzzle or walk around moving boxes, cause that's totally why I'm playing Uncharted. Solid game though but not on the level of 2 or 3 in my eyes.

@knurdyob8 жыл бұрын
I was going to say you didn't get the point of the dark tonal shift, but since everyone already told you that, I'm going to keep it relatively «simple»: you seem to think the game is darker simply because the directors are the ones who made TLOU, but that isn't true at all, they aren't making it darker only because they like darker things, they decided to make it this way because it makes sense in the context of what the character is going through. he's wrestling with the idea of growing up, of realising he has to make sacrifices, and thus he keeps expecting to find a way to have the best of both worlds, yet that's completely impossible. that's called growing up and this Uncharted would be a total disapointment if it had chosen the funny exciting adventure with little substance. not only because it wouldn't make sense in the context of the story, but also because things are supposed to evolve and move forward (which is also something that feeds into this U4's story), yes I have played the other Uncharteds, that's why I'm playing this one! what's the point of giving us something we've already seen? we can all just go back to previous games if we so wish. I was a little disapointed with U3 because of this, and I'm not talking on a tecnical level, I'm talking about the level of substance in the game. on paper, it is an evolution of U2 because it's about him leaving his ring behind and with it the imaginary dream he was pursuing, but the set-pieces and overall tone of the game didn't keep up and it felt actually less important than U2 (which was a great evolution from U1, toying around with the idea of drake being a good thief contrasting with the environment he lived in, and the tone of the game helps that notion) U3 was a great concept overshadowed by tropes of the genre. U4 took that to whole new level. I'm not saying every one of these stories need to be darker to have an evolution, they just need an evolution that makes sense within the story. in this case it simply made sense for the game to be a little darker. Also, something you seem to miss is that Nate IS enjoying all of that! he's in it for the pirate treasure too, he's just using his brother as an excuse, even if he doesn't realise it. in this case I have to be honest and I think this review is the result of poor judgment. you should review a game based on what it is, not what you wanted it to be.
@zkylon8 жыл бұрын
haven't played it myself (or 3 for that matter) so i can't really say if it pulls it off, but escapism and some deeper exploration of these characters and their motivations and the consequences of their actions aren't necessarily mutually exclusive and i also think you can't ask a series to do the same over and over again because you're gonna get bored of it eventually. i don't know if this was the right move for the series but i think i can respect the effort of taking risks and trying something new, even if it backfires

There's some sort of trend I've been seeing in Uncharted 4 reviews. Usually in reviews of other games most of the time is spent in talking about graphics and its performance, its mechanics and if they're polished... but in a lot of Uncharted 4 reviews (including this one) most of the time is spent discussing about the new darker tone, its more grounded approach... you don't see reviewers looking as deep into a game as they do with Uncharted 4.

This is the only elder geek review I have ever disagreed with, honestly I love that the series has evolved to be more mature in storytelling and in my opinion this game is on par with The Last of Us and in some respects better. From the dialogue to the relationships between Nate, Sam, Sully, and Elena I couldn't stop playing and I'm not even quite finished yet. I like the mix of great with even better storytelling and dialogue something that never quite clicked in the previous uncharted games for me. This is by far the best in the series in my opinion.

They did the crash bandicoot style running away from a thing towards the camera in both uncharted 2 and 3. I think he's reading a little to much into that. But i do think he's right about naughty dog wanting to move on and make something more 'mature'. I think thats why drake seemed more like the old man in this one, because the series was getting tired and naughty dog were tired of making it, so they expressed that through the protagonist. I can see why it takes away from the fantasy, but I kinda like it. It feels honest. and the game play is still fun and pretty besides.

I actually bought a Nathan Drake collection ps4 bundle bit since I was a fan since Drake's fortune I can say with a straight face that when I heard uncharted 4 was coming out I wasn't hyped at all lol The series multiplayer was OK but not worth buying PS plus for. I myself use my Xbox and PC to game online simply because steam online free and Xbox one's online experience Trump's over ps4s by a mile. Well at least for me on the east coast. I found it shocking that going back to all uncharted games just didn't feel the same like the first three times I played it. They just got boring after a while with me and uncharted 3s story was just all over the place. Oh Talbot lol. I can definitely wait for a summer sale next year because like Randy said, exclusive games take a while just to drop 20 or 30 bucks. I can't believe I'm saying this but for me and all my friends we are just uncharted sick. No rush to spend 60 bucks on a game I will play once and never bother with the multiplayer. Are there a lot of people playing? My money is on doom right now that game has a great single player and pretty decent multiplayer. Snap map is pretty good and me of all people was able to recreate the first doom level in under 3 hours😂 I say try doom my friend! Totally worth 60 bucks. I would prolly gamefly uncharted 4 at the earliest but hey that is just my opinion man.....

I found the marital issues weird since that was one of the focus of UC3. The biggest let down for me was the pacing. It starts way too slow like Assassin's Creed 3 slow. Once the pace picks up it is great but after UC2 where the very first scene had you getting off a falling train - this seems like a major step down. You are right and dark tone of the game. Let TLOU be TLOU and UC be UC. It is like ubisoft putting AC mechanics in far cry (like tower climbing).

I'm actually a little surprised that the conclusion was a "Worth Buying", considering the entire paragraph leading up to that was more or less grappling with what seemed like a solid "Worth Trying" instead. And beyond the mainstream, I've only really heard mediocre things about this game. That it's pretty, and mechanically sound, but tired and tedious and tonally wrong. It sounded more like this "Worth Buying" was "because there's little else on consoles right now, and its the end of the series" than the game standalone being fully worth the time.

Spoilers coming up. I liked this review, but I disagree almost entirely with a few points. I think that your desire for escapism doesn't mean the franchise is beholden to a lighthearted tone. From Uncharted 3 to The Last of Us, Naughty Dog has been treading heavier subject matter. From E3 trailers to box art, it was clear that this game was going to be darker. I think you misconstrue that darker subject matter with Naughty Dog being tired of the franchise. This game is very reflective of ND's past. There are two Crash flashbacks, tons of references to past games within this franchise, and an exploration of Nate's family's past. It recreates the gameplay rhythm of The Last of Us, with the exploration/combat cycle, with Uncharted's classic climbing mechanics in there, too. It utilizes TLoU's environmental storytelling, and mirrors TLoU's intro in UC 4's (much happier) epilogue. I'd say this was a proper send off for Nate, with a reflection on how far Naughty Dog has come.

Your review makes me desperately want to have a discussion with you to give Uncharted 4 another play through down the road. I think it's possible that your expectations were a touch too specific, and due to that you felt disappointment when the game deviated from what you imagined you were going to be playing. Also, as a reviewer, you often must play a specific game (and complete it expediently) instead of playing something you're simply in the mood for. Similar circumstances have led me to not enjoy a game or movie simply because of preconceived notions that were not congruent with the actual experience. However, I'm sure you are aware of this potential in your profession, and all of the reasons you didn't enjoy the game are, more or less, subjective. Perhaps, unfortunately, this opinion is, in fact, set in stone for you. I hope that you do give it another play through at some point, though, as Uncharted 4 is a defining gaming experience for myself as well as many, many others. From a technical standpoint at least, it's objectively a defining gaming experience, and one that I hope everone who loves gaming can soon enjoy. I can think of no better example than Uncharted 4 as a work of passion, respect, and love for gaming. Thanks for reading:)

Your sounding awfully jaded with games these days. Guess it happens with the state of the AAA games industry. Heres hoping we can get awestruck and less cynical Randy back :/

This game deserved mixed to good reviews at best, but critical acclaim? For this? Gimme a break. Critical acclaim is reserved for innovative games, like Bioshock Infinite, not a rinse and repeat cliche Hollywood rehash. The gunplay is good, the vistas are gorgeous, but everything else is meh. That car chase was insanely bananas though. To elaborate: Much like in Tomb Raider, I have a problem with devs justifying the murder of hundreds of lives with a ridiculous treasure hunt. Death is a commodity, right? How many people are you going to murder to spare 1 life, even if that life is your brother. Nathan's answer? I will murder like about 400 people. I'm sorry, but Nate is not a likeable character, he's a spoiled brat who thinks the world is his oyster, and so is Sam. Though I guess that goes with the treasure hunting brand. Villain Von Badguy III and Token Black Bitch are some of the most forgettable villains in gaming. The random quips Nate and Sam exchange are cutesy, but also have zero purpose. Can you add some filling to this hollow dialogue please? Something that enlightens us about motivations or character? Something that adds to the characters? No, just some stupid lines because there's a lot of downtime here. I have an older brother, and Nate and Sam don't talk like brothers, they talk like high school acquaintances.

Nobody cares about the lifes of faceless criminals and soldier. they deserve to die.

Guilherme Duarte And a man who kills hundreds of others doesn't? Maybe those mercenaries killed before, maybe they deserve to die, but then so does Nate. But oh wait, he has gel in his hair and has a charming smile, so he doesn't, right? That's some pathetic logic you put here.

+Marc Shanahan Its a game. Stop being so serious. They aren't saints either. They have no other choice but kill or be killed. Is not like nate is killing children or something.

Actually you could just go complete the game(expect the final boss) without killing anyone, so get your facts gets straight before talking trash. Their is even a trophy for that.

Seems like almost every fascinating nuance of character growth, character development, went straight over your head as well as the handsome action hero killing many faceless thugs being apart of the adventure genre ever since it started. Where's the hate for Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, and let's not forget Rambo.

anaalinaama Then bring that up and bring up the issues the series had, don't bitch about the tone and call it a day.

+civilwarfare101 He talked about the things he liked from the previous games and the things that bothered him with the newest game, maybe he didn't have issues with the previous game.
@civilwarfare1018 жыл бұрын
Vega M There are plenty of issues he could've mentioned with the previous games but nah, let's just talk about how the tone is more serious than usual and call it a day. This almost makes his Styx review look good.
@VegaMyster8 жыл бұрын
***** Well why would he go all out on the previous games when he's talking about the newest one? He said the gameplay, graphics ect were great but said he didn't like the tonal shift.

Whoa! A so-so opinion on this game. I wonder what your opinion would be for Doom 4.
