Episodes like “What’s Your Problem” are the reason I watch Steven Universe. That being said, I didn’t find the first half of the episode all that hot, but the second half which demonstrates just how far the relationship between Amethyst and Steven has developed is absolutely incredible.

The first half is awesome when you watch it again. You actually can see Amethyst trying to help Steven. She’s try’s to get him to play video games and ignore Sapphires problem. She try’s to make him laugh by shrinking to a crab size. Then she try’s to goof around by dog piling on him. The first half of the episode is meant to show how focused Steven was on finding Ruby, and to show how Amethyst was forced to leave Steven behind or else he’d never stop trying to fix the Garnet problem.

I was aware what she was doing by the end of my first watch (and I had a hunch in the middle of it), it's just still a lot of fluff padding that could have been carried out in less time, or in a more interesting manner within a similar time frame (my "pure padding" remark was an over-exaggeration though, yes). The manner in which we leave Sapphire and Pearl behind rubbed the wrong way the most though. It's not a horrible first half, it's just very unremarkable, and gets overshadowed by how awesome I found the second half.

idkJulio I agree. The first time I watched, the first half seemed really messed up to me. I didn't understand why Amethyst wasn't taking the missing Ruby situation seriously and her jokes and goofs seemed out of place. But when you rewatch the episode you can see that she's trying hard to cheer up Steven, like when they're on the ride and she notices he's not having fun like she is, he's just dropping flyers. It makes the second half even better.

I saw it differently. The way the episode was set up, it sort of throws you through a loop. To me, Amy came off as lazy/indifferent the whole time. She's been shown to be very chill during serious situations, so we've come to accept that that's how she is. When we arrive to the climax and Steven says "were you trying to cheer me up?" it was like hooly shit, I had Amethyst all wrong! Then you go back and watch it again, and lo and behold, she was being indifferent because she thinks it shouldn't be their problem to find Ruby. Could the first half have been done better? Sure, nothing is 100% perfect. But Idk a better way to show Steven spending all day looking for Ruby while ALSO being so caught up in the drama that he doesn't smile/laugh, then with a good ol' fashion montage. I think the episode does a great job considering its only 11 minutes.

Agree with the above. Amethyst was trying to cheer Steven up from the start and it plays very well on a second view. Obviously the second half is better but I think you're being a touch harsh on the opening. I can't think of another way they could've done it without obviously telegraphing the ending

I could tell right away that Amethyst’s attitude wasn’t just her old repressing feelings, since she was very specifically trying to get Steven involved in whatever she was doing. But, I think the execution of it was a little off putting. Maybe they meant for it to a misdirect? Like they wanted us to assume it was a regression on Ame’s part? I do agree that it works better on a second watch.

I feel like the message was confusingly delivered, but I loved it's content. Amethyst realizing that Steven has been the cheerleader and mediator for too long was very insightful, and I feel like I can relate to that on a personal note.
@uncivilizedelk

If you're talking about just the Amethyst-Steven conversation and none of the preceding stuff, I actually loved how it felt semi-meandering and lacking in focus, because I feel it reflected actual real-life conversation pretty well (until the over-top helicopter shenanigans start of course). For me it felt like the most "real" SU ever got when it comes to writing dialogue.
@enderwiggins8248

Uncivilized Elk I see now why we might disagree: Knowing that amethyst was feeling guilty / frustrated by the fact that thousand-year-old beings kept using Steven to vent about their thousand-year-old problems, the conversation in the pizza parlor definitely takes on a new light. However, on first watch, I think this perspective isn't readily available. As you said, amethyst was acting very crass in the beginning, implying she was unwilling to immediately recognize her feelings, whatever they might be. However, in the pizza parlor, it does seem that amethyst is herself angry with Rose/Pink (how weird is it to write that). Particularly when she asks whether Steven is angry, and jams the spoon into the pizza slurry, it looks like typical projection. She's looking for anger in Steven, because that's what she's unable to express, but acutely feeling. Likewise, when she says it isn't fair and not her problem, blushing and then saying it isn't Steven's problem, this appears to be confirmation of this projection. She's frustrated that she has to deal with the issues that have arisen from the Rose Pink revelation, like Garnet's de-fusion. Then, embarrassed because they were supposed to be talking about Steven, she sidesteps. Thus, I thought the insightful delivery in the end was confusing, because I wasn't able to see where amethyst had emotionally grown before. It seemed out of the blue. The conversation in the parlor, the crux of the buildup felt ambiguous in this way.

But I for sure agree that Amethyst's rant in the very end felt real and good and strong, a declaration of responsibility
@uncivilizedelk
@uncivilizedelk 6 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree, but that's also why I liked it, although during my first watch I wasn't forming any strong opinions of what Amethysts true feelings were until it was overtly made clear (because I felt the episode was purposefully being vague [in a realistic and believable way though], so I assumed her legit feelings could go a number of directions). I do want to add that Amethyst definitely was projecting to some extent. Her desire for Steven to have less burdens is at the forefront, but she's sick of being saddled with the past as well (she says so herself). That's even more reason why I dug it so hard; Amethyst is trying to talk about multiple issues and multiple people at the same time while trying her best to repress her emotions, and having a tough time with it

I thought the Pearl and Sapphire crying scene was comedy gold. Maybe just because of how over the top it was and how that's so totally Pearl. Honestly I could imagine Peridot sitting in the bathroom like, "Oh God they are crying again, please tell me they aren't about to start singing next." Anyway this episode just cements why Amethyst is my favorite character (at least out of the main three crystal gems). I love the relationship she had with Steven and it's honestly one of the reasons I keep watching the show. Amethyst is really down to earth, lol. This might have been my favorite episode of the bomb just because of that! But then Reunited came along and I dunno if anything can really beat that episode. But I guess I'll leave my feelings about that episode once you review it.

The interactions Steven and Amethyst had was so well written that it felt almost real. I found this episode relatable especially when they were eating out and talking on the beach. Ruby's letter was cute and really felt like her. I noticed on the bottom of her note it looks like she was going to sign as Garnet. It was a small detail still it was my favorite from this episode. c:

A detail about the letter that I like is that Ruby wrote Sapphi at first, which is Sapphire's nickname, but then added the re after realizing they aren't on nickname terms. Or it could just be Ruby being bad at spacing words.

I don’t know, if you think of maturity in terms of how the gems act within their responsibility as adults, I’d say she is the most mature. Pearl is an emotional wreck that needs reassurance constantly, Garnet literally falls apart and yet again piles her relationship problems on everyone else. Amethyst is the only one who recognizes that Steven is a child, and that raising a child involves keeping your shit together for their sake.
@chaincat33

I think Amethyst's overt aloofness of the situation is pretty telling. The scene was clumsy in the sense that Sapphire's emotions were played for laughs when paired with pearl's barely legitimate concerns, but Amethyst coming off as almost or even completely callous is spot on for someone who is trying to repress their emotions, whatever they might be. She was in an almost cpmplete emotional shut down and wanted to distract herself. It's how she's been shown to cope, and a defense mechanism I'm personally all too familiar with. A bit ironic to see a firebrand like amethyst try to bury her emotions, and that's thy she struggles so much, I think, but that's really what it feels like. She then spends the rest of the first half of the episode trying to get steven to use her style of coping, to little success. So we get to the pizza scene where we see her emotions in full brunt. It's unfair that steven has to keep helping people like this. He's just a kid, he shouldn't have to deal with a collective 15000 years or so of emotional turmoil. He's being asked to emotionally shoulder the world for no reason other than his birth. In showing this stance, she also shows her own problems in part with the situation. She doesn't want to break down, she doesn't want steven to get involved in her problems, but it's also unfair that she has to deal with a war she never fought in. So she's angry, but she can't let herself break down, not again. So she wants to see her emotions reflected in steven. Unfortunately, for all that Greg and the gems tried, they raised a martyr, and he tries to shoulder Amethyst's emotions as well, leading her to get further frustrated.I think my second gripe is with the end, how they never really talk about or resolve steven's emotions in any capacity like how amethyst wanted to. In the end, she just declares she won't be making steven shoulder any more emotional baggage he has no business shouldering, and that just ends the situation. I'd still like to know steven's take. We know Pearl is a biased source when it comes to rose, and steven knows it as well. while most of her account clould be accurate, key details could have been left out, and indeed, Pearl failed to absolve many of Pink's short sighted decisions. Steven likely still has a ton of questions he won't ever ask because the plot demands surprises, and a big old bag of mixed emotions, because Pink wasn't justified. Pink wasn't in the right, and Pink didn't do everything she could have. And in an emotional show like this, I think protag's emotional take on his mom is pretty important.

The implication I got from the scene at the pizzeria was that Amythyst was indeed bothered by the events, but felt that Steven came first and by contrast her issues weren't as big. Yeaaah it bothered her, but not as much as knowing Steven is dealing with so much and currently without the support of the other crystal gems who are currently falling apart over these events that obviously have nothing to do with Steven himself.

I guess I didn’t find amethyst’s aloofness at the beginning a problem because I was kind of in the same boat as her lol. All I could think of was that Sapphire should be going to find ruby and fixing their own problem, and after everything they’ve been through, Ruby not coming back eventually would’ve been incredibly odd anyway. I would’ve interpreted the note as ruby needing time alone, so like amethyst I would’ve just distracted myself until she did come back. I was just kind of done with the whole situation xD then again, the only character I’m truly invested in at this point is rose/PD, so I’m likely not as concerned about their affairs as most of the audience

@Uncivilized Elk: I think it was fine that Amy was detached because 1) It was Sapphire's fault to begin with and 2) if she didn't decide to become a weepy mess, she could have used Future Vision to find her instead of reenacting an episode of the Crying Breakfast Friends. It literally *wasn't* Amethyst's problem at all.

I wouldn't say Amethyst is the most mature but... her development has actually makes her less selfish. Before she would be so self absorbed that she'd put Steven in danger without much consideration while being apathetic to everyone else including the other gems. Plus her little moment of traumatizing Greg was really messed up. But as time has passed, Amethyst has learned to take responsibility for her actions and for Steven. She doesn't try to make everyone's problems her own and normally drops her drama when someone she loves is in danger. Meanwhile, Garnet and Pearl normally are caring and protective towards Steven. Motherly and very nurturing. But whenever their personal drama surfaces, they suddenly show a side that makes them seem like they don't really care about Steven. They care about themselves and Rose. I know it's not true but the writers make it seem like that.

The entire episode i thought amethyst was just acting like a kid like she always does, but by the end of it i realized that all of the episode she was actually the most mature you’ve ever seen her, and i absolutely love how this episode completely played off of Steven and Amethyst’s relationship cause in the end, especially after their character arc together with smoky quartz, you realize that the closest crystal gem to Steven is Amethyst. This was my favorite episode of this steven bomb. On your last review, i mentioned that the Pink D reveal lacked any real character, and that it limelighted how soft and trope-heavy the emotions of the show had gotten. Amethyst is my favorite gem now. This complex, multi-faceted set of problems culminating into a Gurren Lagann style speech made me so happy. It gives me hope that the show still has room for that, even if the rest of the episodes of this bomb dont show it.

djmeagaaim17 trope heavy means exactly what it sounds like. A lot of these character arcs lack any originality or depth imo, at least not compared to the peak of the show which was everything from Jailbreak to Lion 4. I think the "Amethyst being the most mature" thing is just a call-back to the episode Steven vs Amethyst where Amethyst tells Steven "now you're even more mature than me" and "now I'm the worst Crystal Gem". I really love how the two have developed a sibling-like relationship, complete with vocabulary and references that only the two of them can fully understand. They really feel more like peers and equals now, whereas Garnet and Pearl often still play more maternal roles.

Things like why are the diamonds in their personal ships going for the cluster? And why in the universe did yellow diamond try to arm wrestle the cluster? If she was trying to awaken it, than she should have just backed away from it, if she was trying to poof it, than you would think that they would have used some weapons to poof it. Frankly even yellow diamond herself could have zapped it to poof it. In the trial they were talking about how strange that none of pink diamond court stopped rose quarts, But when the diamonds come to earth by themselves for some reason to play(?) with the cluster, they didn’t even bring their pearls. Basically I feel like reunited was just a mashed together story to get the diamonds stuck on earth.

Huh, I loved all of it. The first half compliments the second half of the episode. Plus it's not a Steven-getting-kidnapped-and-taken-to-trial situation. Ruby would have most certainly come back eventually. I mean her speech at the end is literally about how they shouldn't have to deal with any of the fallout. Hence her aloof nature. Gotta admit your disregard for such a big part of the episode by just calling it padding really doesn't sit right with me. I thought it was extremely fun and it feels like the creators actually like working on this show again

I don't know if you noticed but Amethyst's seat while she's a helicopter has a Steven Universe star on it. Not sure what this might be symbolising. Perhaps that connection and social link you were talking about or the fact that it's on a seat may mean that she's trying to help and do some emotional lifting as the support.

I noticed this while watching the episode, on Ruby's note to Sapphire, I think she almost signed as Garnet instead of as Ruby. Just look at the scribble, it kind of looks like "Ga" is underneath.

Eh... the 2nd half of Reunited was waaaay too fast-paced for my heart to have time to sink. Most of the time before I could properly comprehend what my feelings even were at the moment, we were already on to the next bit.

Uncivilized Elk right! I wonder why it felt so fast pace, I mean i loved the episode but what could they have done to kinda slow it down. Make the episode longer, make the ruby and sapphire wedding a separate episode? I just don’t know...😕
@Missdigitallycrazed
@Missdigitallycrazed 6 жыл бұрын
I agree it was definitely a faster pace than what the show usually does. I feel like what they should've done was made the wedding its own episode and made the diamond fight it's own episode was well, but make THAT one a 22 minute special, rather than adding the wedding in.

In retrospect this feels like a microcosm of the show in a nutshell.... Or at lest one aspect of the show as it keeps moving on. Like a lot of early SU can be seen or felt as kinda filler-ish, or something like that. I don't know how to fully explain my feelings right now on my statement. But I do love this epsoide and enjoyed all of the StevenBomb and damnit dislike how we gotta wait till sep till new episodes. Assuming the rumors are true...

Amethyst was little more than a HOUSE PET for 5000 years. In around 2 decades Greg and Vidalia, and then Steven turned her in the most Balanced of the Crystal Gems. I would like to see more people realizing and discussing this absurd time lapse. I mean 5000 like a domestic animal of the Crystal Gems and then in a period 250 times lower than this she developed into that full person she is now.

I feel the whole episode meshed a bit better than you gave it credit. The opening was meant to be comical embellishment. While it's fun to analyze things, and the characters often feel very real in many modern cartoons, this is still a show that was designed and planned. Amethyst was cold because they were making her point of view at the pizza place later reflect her then: her first concern from the moment he came back was distracting Steven and keeping him from dealing with these issues. The crying was then embellished for comedic effect; Pearl and Sapphire clutching each other, Pearl having big watery eyes, and then it kept on them after Amethyst left. I got a chuckle out of it, anyway. From there, the search was meant to continue emphasizing Amethyst's attempt at distracting Steven, her goofing off and trying to show him things as he focused on the search, until the situation came to the more direct turn. It doesn't work perfectly, but I feel the entire episode makes sense.The first half was to give an embellished sense of what was going on: Steven is trying to help, Amethyst is trying to distract and cheer him up. So much so that I personally feel the episode picks up when Steven says pizza always cheers him up, because Amethyst latches onto it immediately in a way that I felt was pretty blunt.

I think a large part of amathists calusnes was her actualy being mad at the older gems and the goofyness was to try and distract herself and steven from the mess dumped on them shes trying to make him happy instaid of being a burden like the others.

Amethyst only comes off as detached because she had a singular focus of trying to help Steven and she knew Steven would want to help them. All she does the whole episode is try to help Steven - but it feels out of place because she normally isn’t the empathetic type.
