A 1985 documentary about the life and political career of Earl K. Long, who served as the Governor of Louisiana from 1939-1940, 1948-1952, and 1956-1960. It chronicles: his early life in Winnfield, Louisiana; his relationship with his older brother Huey P. Long; his campaigns for governor; his political and governing style; his accomplishments in supporting the poor white and black citizens of Louisiana through programs like free hot lunches and old age pensions; his tirade in the state legislature that led to his commitment to a mental hospital; his affair with stripper Blaze Starr; and his successful Congressional campaign shortly before his death in 1960. This documentary includes interviews with family members, colleagues and political observers. Narrator: Henry Clements

Longism should make a come back. Perhaps I should run for governor and carry on with the family ideology.

There are a few branches of the Long family name etymologically speaking. One being English and the other from Norway. One came in the late 1800’s from England. Moved to Louisiana. The other was a family that had the surname Longsword which was shortened for Americanism. The Longsword family name is of Viking blood and direct descendants of the first King Of Norway William Longsword. If you look at the name you’ll see MikeLong.

My grandfather was a doctor, from Lecompte, La. Governor Long, was a friend of his. I have a couple rings in a safe deposit box, that were gifts from Gov. Long. As it turns out, an M.D, is the only person, that can over ride a commitment by a family member. He wasn't crazy, or perhaps, as a fox. He was actually a very erudite man, and he was somewhat of a method actor politician, a masterful one at that.

I don't care if he was crazy or not. I had medical care from EKL in Baton Rouge in 2009. Best damn hospital must caring staff ever. I miss it. I miss the Longs. I'm a Nola born and raised girl who also lived in BR. I HATE SS and FDR. Share Our Wealth wasn't socialism it was caring for the poor. The US might have stayed great had they ruled the country. I know all about the corruption and antics. They were just less sketchy about it. That's the truth. Who wasn't corrupt? None! We got free textbooks, free health care, the first great bridge, highways other states longed lol for. LSU had a reason to be proud. R.I.P. the Long brothers!!

Not sure why someone with your values would hate the New Deal; it achieved a lot of what Share Our Wealth promised--till Reagan's "trickle-down" nonsense started eroding it.

@@lawsonj39 Well for one, FDR was receiving funding the Rockefellers and their Louisiana Branch of Standard Oil in Louisiana held an essential Monopoly over the oil and Huey Long fought against and Huey Long supported The FDR during his early days, but felt like FDR betrayed his original goals and wasn't actually doing much to help Common People. And FDR soon would label Huey Long as one of two of the most dangerous men in America. The other being Macarthur.

My family isn’t crazy. I can understand why some would come to that conclusion tho. The Wright brothers were also seen as nuts and we owe them a great deal today. We can’t all be as reserved as Heddy LeMar. Humans are persuadable. New ideas are nothing new. Monopolies shouldn’t exist, not even in a Capitalist society. Longism needs to make a come back. Communism and socialism don’t have a place in our country. We can be social without being taxed to do so. In fact if the big companies ran some numbers they might find it cheaper to help their community rather than pay the heavy taxes. This country has been divided and nearly turned upside down. Today is Independence Day and our youth couldn’t tell you who Paul Revere was. Our teachers are Marxists now and have fully lost their minds.

I read with enormous interest the T Harry Williams bio of Huey P. Long. But for a fuller understanding of the history and influence and achievements of the Long family, it is well to do some research on Earl, as well....
