Batiste was the assistant band leader, vocalist and bass drummer of the Treme Brass Band for decades. Uncle Batiste died July 8, 2012 from a short battle with cancer.

I just knew the man from my annual rewatch of HBO’s Treme. He was instantly recognizable and seemed like a really nice guy.

They first pay their respect with the sad song. But then they celebrate what the person did in his life and all the good he has done. This is how funerals should be. its ok to mourn a lost one but its a shame to let that overtake all the good things sed person did

I love my city. The slow mournful music at the beginning is called a dirge. Then the happy second line celebrates the deceased's life.

five'll get you ten Uncle Lionel was boppin' in that box. Just a fantastic way to 'celebrate' a life. Never met the Gentleman, but you gotta know that's the way he'd want to go out. Truly hope 'onenawlins' is happening. "Everybody" getting a little glide in their stride'. Thanks for this!

El nombre del tema musical no es "Solo un corto paseo contigo" (Just a closer walk with thee) sino "Gracia Asombrosa" (Amazing Grace).

"A closer walk with you" signfica "camino mas cerca de ti", y se refiere a que el muerto ahora camina cerca de Cristo. Esta es una cancion que combina Blues, Gospel y Jazz y data posiblemente de antes de la guerra civil (1860-1865).

Ante la invitación de youtube responderé, no con intención de polemizar sino de aportar lo que pueda al diferendo: .) "Solo un corto paseo contigo" y "Un paseo mas cerca de ti" son las traducciones corrientes del tema "Just a closer walk with thee", aunque puede haber variaciones. Seguramente la palabra "paseo" esta siendo usada en un sentido metafórico, aunque aún literalmente una caminata es siempre un paseo. Conforme a Tom Bethell, la edición príncipe del tema la realizó Kenneth Morris en Chicago en el año 1940, sin ser la melodía original de él, e inicialmente fue grabada por la hermana Rosetta Tharpe, con fecha 1 de diciembre de 1941. El clarinetista George Lewis dijo haberla escuchada por primera vez en una máquina reproductora de discos, a fines de la década de 1930, y que debió ser improvisada por la banda de John Casimir durante un funeral en Nueva Orleáns, a pedido de la viuda del difunto, por haber sido en vida su canción preferida. Carolyn Buck enfermera y amiga de Lewis, relató que este en su lecho de muerte en Touro Infirmary (12/1968), pidió que la banda tocara "The old rugged cross" en su funeral, cuando el cuerpo fuera retirado de la Iglesia Olive Branch. También este tema tiene sus bemoles, ya que para algunos la traducción es literalmente "Vieja y rustica cruz" y para otros "Vieja cruz de madera". .) En cuanto a la Guerra de Secesión comenzó un año después de lo expuesto y si bien reconoce en su origen varios motivos políticos y económicos, el "puntapie" inicial lo dió el General confederado Beauregard, al bombardear Fort Sumter en 1861, un fuerte federal ubicado frente a las costas del estado sureño de Carolina del Sud. Su bella casa en el barrio francés con columnas de estilo griego, frente al Convento de Ursulinas, sigue en pie y puede ser visitada.También retuvo su nombre Congo Square, frente al Auditorio Municipal, al lado del Parque Louis Armsatrong y a doscientos metros del Cementerio de San Luis Nro. 1 y de la Iglesia Ntra. Señora de Guadalupe. Por mi parte punto final.
