Was able to swap out my plugs and upstream sensors today. 30mins to do plugs, 15mins to do the drivers side sensor and 2hrs to do the passenger side. Lol. No room hardly to fit a wrench or even turn it. Had to unbolt the transmission lines bracket to gain more access and then realized after 2hrs, I was attempting to tighten it. Oops! My 5.0 runs smooth now it seems. Still only 11.4mpg. 🤦‍♂️

This is the only good DIY video out there. All the others just show the downstream because they are unable to complete the upstream sensor. The upstream sensors are 100x harder than downstream on these trucks, there is ZERO room for leverage. Also, showing how to undo the sensor plugs is something no one else shows. Great video!!!

I think no two swaps will be the same but this video definitely helped me out. I ended up using a open 7/8 wrench and a pry bar as leverage to crack the threads of the sensor. o2 socket came in handy to thread on the new one. I also removed one bolt for the tailpipe heat shield from the chassis. That allowed me to get to the connectors a little easier. If you have access to a lift getting the leverage to crack the sensor off will be a lot easier. Thank for the vid.

Helpful video for working on my 2009 F150 5.4L. I was able to get the plug to release by using a small but long flathead screwdriver by sticking it in the slot from the other direction. Was reluctant to cut the wires in order to use a reg 7/8 socket as there’s no going back and that’s when I tend to run into real problems. (Having done this now and if I have to do it again, that is probably what I’ll do). Initially tried using a 7/8” wrench on the sensor but it was too short and I couldn’t get near enough leverage. Also the area was too tight to get a pipe on the wrench. So went to oreilly and they loaned me a set (free) of these sockets-one similar to yours and two other shorter ones with offset flanges for the ratchet (3/8 and 1/2). Used one of these and was able to break it loose quite easily. Still a good fight undoing the sensor by hand and then resetting it as well as the plug due to how tight the area is. The heat shield on my truck makes this area very tight (and sharp) and my forearms fared no better than Mark’s. Great job and thanks for the video!

Glad I watched your video! I was going to make my own video, but average viewers don't realize how much time a KZbinr spends trying to make a respectable video. I bought the O2 socket with the ratchet drive on the side not on top. Used a long handled flex head ratchet and it was relatively easy to break it loose. I'm so glad I bought that O2 socket, it saved me a lot of pain and cursing! The O2 sensors on the cats look like a major pain due to the heat shields, but that's another day. The hardest part was getting access to the wire connector to remove it from the plastic stake-on that holds it secure. You have to fight the heat shield, it's limited access. I also made sure to tuck the new wire back in place and to snap the connector back in place.

@@unclemarksdiyauto I figured it out. My father-in-law was messing with the mass flow sensor. They never put the unit back together properly. I also had engine coil number one gone. With the mass flow not getting a tight seal it leads to a whole bunch of other codes apparently from what the mechanic has told me. He said with an old style tool that reads codes always mark down in the logbook. The first code that comes up is usually the one that you focus on. The first code told me there was an air leak. Hey UncleMarks, how did you determine that was Sensor 1? I'm getting conflicting information from the internet and my '13-'14 factory service manual. The sensor on the catalytic converter is a CMS (Catalytic Monitoring Sensor), which leads me to believe the one you were operating on was Sensor 2, as other information on forums have stated that Sensor 1 is closer to the exhaust manifold pointing to the firewall in the engine bay.
@unclemarksdiyauto

I was working from underneath, so the farthest from me (which was closer to the exhaust manifold) is sensor 1. Look at the 2 sensors. Sensor 1 is closer to the engine, sensor 2 is closer to the muffler. (exaggerated explanation) In reality, they are within probably a foot of each other.

2 one each side of the motor! They don’t make it easy if you don’t have a hoist. Thanks for stopping by, James!

That Champ Car doesn't have any O2 sensors. I was just joking. I am an ex-Midget owner and driver and couldn't help to notice the beautiful Champ car.@@unclemarksdiyauto

@@jamestapp5545 I missed the joke! I had a viewer who knew the driver or owner of that car! (I can’t remember, but they too noticed it!) I have a different poster up right now so it took me a bit of thinking to know what car you meant!

I should have had the vehicle higher off the ground. That would have helped lots too!

So sorry about too many ads. You tube actually pays .00245 cents per view. So, not getting rich! Lol if you saw 4 ads, I get an One American penny!

@@mavis-watts8731 Good to know! Thanks! KZbin has changed user agreements so now they can place ads on anyones videos, without permission! We all can expect to see more ads. As for my posting, hope it can be of help to someone! Have my Grand Caravan timing belt video coming out in June/July. A harder repair for sure!

Good idea Brandon. The worst part was being trapped under the vehicle with hardly any room to move arms. If this was up on a hoist, it would have been almost a piece of cake! (trying to record it at the same time didn't help)
