Troubleshooting is some of the most challenging, fun and also most frustrating things all in one! Going in and swapping out 4 or 5 items all at once and fixing the problem may win the battle but doesn't win the war because you don't have the answer as to what solved the problem. Something that has worked well for me was to bring a spare distributor, a spare coil, a spare ballast resistor, etc. and change 1 item per pass to see if it wakes the car up. Waaay back to my High School Auto Shop days we had an old school green screen oscilloscope. We had about 4 or 5 coils that we would test and some of these stock or even 40,000 volt coils would break down at 9,000, one broke down at 16,000, etc. It was not something you could see with the naked eye on your bench test but, the coil would breakdown and would not get past those voltage points. I kept hearing you say words or phrases that kept pointing back to the possibility of a coil that was breaking down. I had a '55 Chevy that I ran at the drags that would not make power past a certain RPM and even sounded "statically" like you described. I happened to have a new Mallory Pro Master Coil with me that I swapped out and the car picked up a full second (qtr mile track). The coil swap may be one item to try to rule out a bad coil even though it passed the bench drill test. Best wishes UT, this is the best part and most fun part of hot rodding a good stress as you say!

Tony, just a recommendation: Install a voltmeter to monitor voltage at coil during a pass. Without an alternator, you may not have enough voltage to the ignition system for it to operate properly.

Idling for 45 min without an alt.. not gonna have the right voltage your coil is looking for especially with an extra resistor in the system.

Put the alternator back on just to make sure it's not voltage related. Maybe the fuel pump is pulling too much load or something. Maybe the pump has a corroded wire which limits power to the coil.

They let him sweat for several days before sneaking in in the dead of night and removing the nut. They talked him into going racing that wknd anyway ( I believe it was April 1) where he proceeded to put down an incredible time on an engine that had by this point been tuned within an inch of it's life ;)

Uncle Tony, way back in my HS days my first engine rebuild was a Chevy 250 for my 69 Nova. It was a VoTech school and had all the nice tools , valve grinding and Sun Tune. I set the distributor up on the sun tune, point gap and dwell then ran up the RPM and the most I could get was 4500 - 5000 before the spark would break up due to point float or bounce. Maybe switch over to a petronix model 1361A solid state conversion kit to replace the stock points and retain the stock distributor and be sure the ( - ) neg side of the coil goes to the distributor (easy mistake).

If you've got a wide tang rotor button cut it like a Mallory magneto one bevelled on one side, had an engine play up once and chased it for a week before it dawned on me that the spark could scatter the width of the wide tang, also make sure the end of the rotor is to the side and not under the poles in the cap close as possible .if you ever look at running spark you can see it travels side to side the more space it has to move the more the timing can change at rpm

If you use two ballast resisters and a double pole switch you can warm the car all you want and at the line flip the switch over to the cool resister to make the run. Then leave it on that resister until the next run and switch back to the first one that should be cool. This can also work with two resisters on each run.

Left a message in your previous video about the condenser. Catalytic capacitors degrade over time (not necessarily use). Using one from the 60’s, even if a quality part at the time, doesn’t make any sense. Very few catalytic capacitors from that era, in any application still function properly today.

…you’re problem is definitely rpm related- and that eliminates a ton of possibilities- but it may also be speed (g-force) related as well. Sounds like you have covered almost every possible issue that could be the root of the problem- even the valve spring pressure problem (I mentioned earlier) - you say they are new 340 springs, (claiming that’s overkill) , but, did you actually check them, with spring pressure gauge, before installing them ? I’m no pro mechanic myself, and I wouldn’t have checked them either, just assumed I got what I paid for…but…you know what they say. Love this channel man - thanks so much for sharing all you do 🏁

Dyno it and compare it to a previous run. I remember you having a Gtech RR. I don't know if it will work with an automatic transmission, but I use it all the time when modifying and tuning manual transmission cars. Logging mass air flow together with RPM can also give you a very good indication of the power curve. This will require a carb hat, a MAF sensor and some kind of data logger though

I remember you once talking about how this kind of problem can happen because of cylinder wall taper and the rings not being able to adjust to maintain a good seal past a certain RPM. I am also wondering too if it is an issue with the ring seal, not necessarily taper but just a seal. Thanks for answering my previous thought. I know you did things to the oil pan, you don't think that could have caused windage that you thought was accounted for ? I guess what I am getting at is, if the car was better a year ago, what did you change in that time that could have caused the change. I still think this thing is bad a$$ despite the baby steps to get it to where you want it.

One of the best pieces of advice I learned when troubleshooting is as follows: "Never trust the last guy who worked on it, ESPECIALLY if it was YOU!!!" You said "it can only be these two parts" two different times. And you trust that coil explicitly. You can't do that. One of those goes bad, or the wire leading to them is bad, and you are dancing around the problem without ever touching the problem. I know you are doing a lot of troubleshooting, and not videoing much of it. I will suggest this. Swap parts from Z to bottle rocket. All of them. Keep swapping until the problem follows a part. And I mean EVERY part, ESPECIALLY the parts your certain can't be causing it. I've had a bad master cylinder cause an engine to smoke badly, never would have figured that out by saying "theres no way a leaking master cylinder can cause the engine to smoke." I actually figured it out from something else, but the point still stands.

Hi Uncle Tony: thanks for the memories, I had forgotten how fun the early cars were. Drag racing today is just to sterile. I drag raced a 68 Camaro in the 70's 327+.030 11.5:1 compression LT1 370hp solid lifter cam fuelie heads 780cfm carb munice 4 speed trans headers 5:57 Gear (if you're going to some gear on it, put some gear on it) Low 13's high 12's. Lots of fun on the street, would light the Tires very well, especially with the headers open. Before watching the video i'd say throttle didn't open all the way. After watching the video, the engine sounds ruff doing the burn out, going down the track it starts to sound better, more heat more pressure, the charge is easier to ignite?? Hopefully i'll catch the video when you nail the issue down. Just one question Do you carry a 9/64 allen wrench in your wallet to adjust points? Again thanks Steve

Everybody cracks me up with all this MSD electronic ignition you know what the old dual-point Distributors ran the hemis at almost 7,000 RPM with no issue whatsoever and if they understand how a dual point system work they'd understand it's the only works on one point at a time electronic ignition is not the answer I was thinking maybe because you don't have a charging system on it that your batteries ran a bit lower and you're not cranking the full 12 volts into the coil which may have gave you a week or spark just a thought

Man, was class in session in this vid: good stuff. Some people have a perspective problem on advance: when in service, its a system to allow timing to...return to normal - what the engine wants for making power. In otherwords, it could [or should] be called a low speed/idle retarder. A drag car with its higher stall converter has no use at all for this. Zero.

If you got an aftermarket Camshaft it could be advanced 2 degrees or something like that. Factory cams and Lunati are the only cams grounds straight up. You just answered the cam degree question, you said its 4 degrees advanced, I am watching the video, but if you think its straight up and its actually 2 degrees advanced on "0" with you advancing it 4 degrees its really advanced 6 degrees and thatwould cause the pistons to be out of synch with cam timing. Also you have two valves that are open when you cut it offso one Intake and one exhaust rusted and are pitted on the face and that would cause two cylinders to not have correct compression?

Can you put a small alternator, or a 16v race battery.

Uncle T - is it possible, that the valvetrane is suffering from weak valve springs at higher rpms ? This might explain the consistent plug readings for all the plugs, (after a test session) showing no lean or fouling plugs - after all , you say it revs up to a certain point, and then falls on its face. Just a thought.

Am I correct in assuming that if the distributor cap was mis-indexed to the distributor that would be the same as the timing being mis-set by however many degrees advanced or retarded it was off? If yes would that show up if the timing was checked with a timing light? I wouldn't think that could be more than 10 degrees +/- from the planned timing. With the mechanical advanced locked, vacuum advanced disabled, and the distributor locked down in the correct position would that possible error range cause the issue being seen with the engine? Or will that misalignment act differently since the contacts on the distributor cap will always be some fixed distance out of alignment with the rotor?

Thanks for all your great insight. I wish there was someone like you out there for Oldsmobiles. I made a comment on the last video but i was pretty late. Could it be the battery getting weak? You said you let it idle for a while, could it have gotten low on voltage? I've had cars fall on their face when the alternator went bad and the battery started discharging.

No charging system, you're already a couple volts under, a few thousand volts on the top-end you're missing, battery voltage drop is my suspicion, anytime I lost an alternator it never ran right on the way home😮

Left field….solid or hydraulic lifters? is there a possibility that you’re losing oil pressure to the lifters? Oil psi reads fine at gauge, but is finding a crack or loose plug on the way to the lifters.

Sorry Tony but that 6 is not going to make enough top end power to support a 4500 stall . I bet after the auto and stall absorbs all the hp it’s not even putting 120 to the wheels

I really believe you need an alternator, you trying to make Fire with a Battery, you need the amperes the alternator puts out to get optimum spark, thats your problem, car always runs better with the alternator outputting. Your battery was going dead. You beating a dead horse working on all that stuff!! Put the alternator back on it!!
