Rare images of an uncontacted indigenous tribe in the Peruvian Amazon forest were published by Survival International showing dozens of Mashco Piro people on the banks of a river close to where logging companies have concessions.
The reclusive tribe, one of the world's most withdrawn, has been sighted coming out of the rainforest more frequently in search of food and moving away from the growing presence of loggers, said local indigenous rights group FENAMAD.
Survival International said that dozens of Mashco Piro people were photographed at the end of June on the banks of a river in the Madre de Dios region in southeast Peru near the border with Brazil.
The Mashco Piro in the area of the Las Piedras and Tahuamanu rivers seldom appear and do not communicate much with the Yine or anyone, according to Survival International.
Several logging companies hold timber concessions inside the territory inhabited by the Mashco Piro, the nearest just a few miles from where the uncontacted people were filmed.
One company, Canales Tahuamanu, has built more than 200 kilometers of roads for its logging trucks to extract timber, according to Survival International.
A Canales Tahuamanu representative in Lima did not respond to an email request for comment.
The Peruvian government reported on June 28 that residents had informed they saw the Mashco Piro people when they passed by boat on the Las Piedras River, 150 kilometers from the city of Puerto Maldonado de Madre de Dios. - Report from Reuters
