Hi Joe here my understanding of your tiller seal is that you should remove all the stuffing and fill with GOOD WATER PROOF GREASE then put one peace in then more grease and so on if possible change the nut from plastic to brass and fill the inside yes with more grease that should work

Staggering the joints is a must at leat by 90 deg also when you cut the packing make sure this is done with a 45 deg cut and use a very sharp blade to make it a clean cut, have you tried graphite rope? Also have you tried compressing the nut a little more before you do anything? Good luck amd best wishes 👍

replace the zincs. Con sider putting on Propspeed to keep barnicles from attacking. Why not get a new packing nut or having one made of bronze. The new threads will allow you to compact the stuffing more.

I’ve always worked on my own stuff as much as possible for the knowledge of how it works and also to save money where I can. However, In my experiences, I’ve concluded that doing anything the cheapest way possible almost always ends causing both frustration and costing more money that just doing it right the first time. As others have said, have a bronze or brass nut made and fire your engine guy and get another head and have it installed by a pro.

💡All bronze... What is it polished with? Metal cleaning paste, apply it to the bronze and leave it for AT LEAST an hour, then a wire cup brush, specific for grinders, Wavy. Diameter 60 mm

I’m not sure if you know but gland packing is supposed to leak slightly, that’s what lubricates it an stops your shaft from wearing. Also, the more you crank down on it the more you force it into the rudder shaft. New styles of gland packing are very abrasive as they usually have Kevlar in them. Plus, it doesn’t matter if it leaks because your bilge pump should easily cope with it.
@KenGilmour-im3rzКүн бұрын
The Six mm packing was not a good idea. The real answer is to have a new packing nut made from brass
@mattcarroll106Күн бұрын
It’s not the packing nut, it’s the female side in the fiberglass in the bottom of the boat it’s rusted and the threads are not there. They are rusted away, most likely from poor maintenance due to the previous owners.

That stripped PVC nut. Show that to a good plumber, if he sees what I'm seeing he will have a way to completely replace it. I believe its a type of Cap. I've used a ton of those caps all over the place. It just has a hole cut out on the top. That is what it looks like.Maybe an 1.25 inch cap. I suppose they also have metric sizes.

There are no short cuts when you are fixing something on a boat that keeps it afloat. I'd get ready to fit a new rudder tube and bearing and through the plastic nut in through rubbish and ensure you fit a bronze one. The new tube should include a grease nipple so you can lubricant the shaft and packing while the boat is on the water. I agree with comments re propspeed or similar and annodes. If you don't keep the annods up to the boat, you'll be looking at big problems, prop shaft, through holes, engine corrosion damage etc.... If you keep doing the same thing, you'll get the same result!! J

No engine in near future a rudder tube that needs replacing and you keep putting the boat in the water? How many other jobs could be done easily on land?

Mate stop stuffing around and get the rudder tube repaired properly with new threads and a new nut to suit. Also you should have a grease port in-between the bottom and second from the bottom packings with a lantern ring. The reason for this is that you use a suitable water proof high viscosity grease to grease the packings instead of cranking down on the retainer nut which will wear the shaft and stress the threads on the retainer and strip them eventually. I use Aqua-Shield grease from Houghton, which I’ve used for decades offshore and found it to be the best grease for water drenched applications. Find another mechanic for your engine, the one you have is taking you for a ride. What make and model is your engine? I would suspect that it will be an old model and you should be able to find one easily as well as any replacement parts, like the cylinder head.

Could you install a bilge pump in the rudder compartment and get on with your sailing life?
@matthewbaynham6286Күн бұрын
I don't know anything about designing a boat, but it does seem like a strange design to have that hole for the rudder thing below the level of the water. I would have expected that hole for the rudder joint to be up high, because if a killer whale pulls off your rudder or something else happens to your rudder if the entire hole for the rudder joint was above the water then you wouldn't get water coming into your boat. Sorry it just seems like a odd design to me, perhaps sailing boat people just like to live dangerously, I don't know.
