I have a spray bottle of water & glycerin near my makeup that I use as a mixing medium and in a pinch when my face is too powdery! I used to make my own toner with aloe and glycerin and then I became a nerd and started adding all sorts of ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants and using preservatives and now I got a cosmetic science degree on google and I often make my own skincare. My own "weirdies": - hair spray on a spoolie as brow gel. - waterproof mascara as eyeliner (best tight-liner product). Bobbi Brown invented gel liner by using her mascara this way. I think she said interviewd by Sali hughes. - rouge and bronzer as eyeshadows. - cool grey matte eyeshadow as contour. - coconut oil mixed with eyeshadow for a glossy highlight. (basically poor people's RMS luminizer). - SPF cream labeled for body as face sunscreen.

I bet you heard this one at the counters, but Estee Lauder used to say that the most porous thing on your body was your hair, and if you wanted your perfume to REALLY last, to flip your head over and spray the nape of your neck, and then turn your hair back over top, and the scent would diffuse through your hair and last all day :) I still do that!

I was literally, truly just thinking the same about all these tips. In truth, makeup is really just pigments mixed into a base. I literally love mixing mediums I can keep my pigments and get colored mascara, eyeliner, liquid shadows, face products, everything! I've gone down to only buying pressed eyeshadows, loose pigments, lipsticks, sets of foundations (like a palette or airbrush set) and using my mixing mediums to add shine. It's like you manifest my thoughts! Great video, love you.

I also learned many years ago that if you have a liner that is just hard as hell and doesn't want to work on the face without tugging taking a lighter to it for just a few seconds helps soften those waxes so it applies more smoothly, but this was high school when I was buying the cheapest liners possible and wasnt about to throw out a hard liner lol.

I love using face oils in long wearing foundations on my dry dehydrated skin, keeps it looking natural and the longevity is still there !
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
carolas68 Totally! I’ve always mixed oils with my foundations - I have dry skin as well - I never agreed with SOME OTHER beauty gurus who shall remain nameless (caugh-Wayne-caugh LOL) who used to say not to mix the two. We are all different! My skin likes the extra oil! A trick I’ve used for years with oily skin types too is to use an oil-based moisturizer! It helps to “trick” the skin into thinking it has the oil it needs and so it won’t make excess. It actually can keep some oily skin from being too oily.
@kw48986 жыл бұрын
Face oils are also nice mixed in with the saline solution spray trick. You have to shake before use, but it works really well for when your face starts feeling dry after putting on foundation. It gives a really nice glow to the skin too.

Lots of good tips. Love the nasal spray trick. I use the same brand & now I have another use for it. I remember reading about makeup tips in the late 1960’s. The lipstick as a blush, hairspray to fix your makeup, take a lighter to the tip of your eye pencil, & Vaseline over your eye shadow. Also remember using a burnt cork for eye liner. I would try anything makeup wise as a kid. I remember reading to spray perfume in your hair. Also on your clothing because it would last longer. You have to watch spraying your clothing. Don’t spray on silk or satin material. Enjoyed this topic. Love the hair color!

I still love the look of vaseline over eyeshadow. It turns into a creasy mess, but it does look so pretty and editorial for a short amount of time. I don't get why anyone buys those eye glosses when you cou ld just mix pigment with vaseline or even regular lip gloss.

Decades ago (probably 1980s), I read a magazine article where the makeup artist recommended patting a damp paper towel over your face to set your makeup. I actually think it might have been Laura Mercier who made the recommendation. Anyway, I still use that method. It doesn't make your makeup last any longer, but it gets rid of the powdery look without leaving an unnatural finish. I don't use Fix + because I feel like it makes my skin look plastic-y. I watched Dick Page's interview on Salli Hughes' channel and he talked about using the Marc Jacobs highlighter stick with powder eyeshadows to make pearl-finish cream eyeshadow. I really enjoyed that interview; he seems to do a lot of mixing and repurposing and it made me look at my own makeup collection in a whole different way.

Great video, Dustin! Totally agree on the mixing foundation tip, especially when I get a tan in the summer. I just mix up a new shade with what I have, rather than buying a brand new bottle of foundation. Here's a tip - in a pinch, clear brow gel works to tame flyaways on a windy day. Came in handy the other day.

I don't care what anyone says..When I have a gig at the beach in the summer, nothing keeps my make-up on like a good shot of Elnett (I prefer the unscented). Also, I use plain ol' aloe vera gel as a moisturizer/primer. I'm oily, yet dehydrated. A facial mist followed by a thin layer of aloe gel locks in hydration(thus making the skin smoother for make-up) without the bulk of conventional moisturizers and/or primers. Thanks for the video!! Have a great weekend!!
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
Gaptoothredheadedsinger I’ve used aloe as a hair gel many many times! If you have shorter hair it helps everything stay in place all day but when you want it gone all you have to do is run your hands through your hair and it breaks down haha super easy! 🙌

I have been putting saline solution in my old fix+ bottles for awhile now and it works so well for when you look too powdery and it's stupid cheap. My favorite "trick" is buying liquid lipsticks to use as liquid eyeliner. When the whole metallic liquid lipstick thing was a trend I bought so many thinking I'd look like a cool space robot 70s disco star, but I hated the way they looked on my lips, but they're the coolest eyeliners. I have a rose gold one that looks so hot with burgundy shadows.

Thanks Dusty! It was sweet hearing what you wrote years ago! I can't think of any unconventional makeup tips but in terms of skin care, I have extremely dry skin and yet I also sweat profusely from the face. So to try to get more moisture without a bunch of heavy layers of skin care, I will add a drop of Cacay Oil or other oil or serum to my sunscreen. It keeps me from getting too dried out as the day goes on and yet does not add another layer to my skincare regime.

The hairspray trick ... I was about to post so I’m glad you said it! At the very least I’ve gone back to using hairspray to set my brows... nothing makes for the perfect set brow like a shot of hairspray and a spooley to comb through. I figured this out in the 80’s and have tried wax and brow gels but hairspray is still the best (superior method) and today with the formulas you don’t have to be concerned that the alcohol will dry and cause flaking. 💞
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
xXxXxCGPBxXxXx Yup! I used to use hairspray sprayed on a spooly brush and then brushed through my brows to just comb them through - holds hairs in place better than any brow gel! 🙌

I don’t have any makeup tricks except for obvious ones like use bronzer & blush as eyeshadow as all for a quick get ready or summer look. I do recommend getting a small fridge for your skincare & makeup. I keep my skincare, foundation & lipsticks in there. I started when my son was done with college and brought his little refrigerator home. They now have teeny tiny fridges that could fit on some counters, not mine I have a small bathroom but if you have a larger counter & you don’t mind having some space taken up with a tiny refrigerator you might look into it. Back to school sales should be starting soon.

I've had people ask me what highlighter I was wearing and every time it's just a drop or two of jojoba oil. Catches the light so well while still looking like healthy skin. You and your vids inspire my creativity (such as it is...). This one especially did. The Arm & Hammer product you showed is one I don’t recall having seen in stores. Since it’s a saline solution, would it be with the cold remedies? As much as I like using cream products, I avoid them this time of year due to oily skin. Other than Aqua net, what setting sprays do you like? I can’t use one that leaves a glaze. Still loving the hair-great color for summer!

Most of my tips are coming from you actually. :) I found your channel randomly when you had a video (years ago) on red lipstick and how beautiful it is when you tap glitters over it. That was many years before the Path McGrath glitter lipsticks and company....It was groundbreaking (well it was for me and I had never seen it in any videos before). Then once you mentioned in a video that to make a foundation lighter, you mix the Illamasqua Skin Finish (I think that's the name) foundation in that slightly peachy color with the darker foundation since it works better than mixing a dark foundation with a lighter / white foundation. Works miracles for me. The final unconventional beauty tip that I can recall it's from a recent video, when you said that powder highlighters can be worn under foundation for a more natural look. Love this tip since I have fully transitioned to cream highlighters in the past years but at the same time I have so many expensive powder highlights that I didn't want to throw away. So....thanks for the tips. :)

I find brushing my eyebrows after drawing small stokes with the eyebrow pencil really helps making the brows look natural. Also, I find doing my makeup at least half an hour before I go out really helps my makeup to last longer especially in harsh weather like cold or humid; it is as if that half an hour helps the makeup to set while I am in nice room temperature.

I hardly think mine are unconventional, but I use a lighter on my eyelash curler to heat it up, which is the only thing besides a lash perm that will hold my lashes curled. I also use baby powder instead of a face powder, seeing as I can get a half a kilo of pure talc for about two dollars - it helps that I'm really pale, though, I'm not sure it wouldn't be ashy on anyone who's tan or darker...
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
RedhairedBallerina In high school I used to use baby powder as a setting powder. Have you ever tried MAC’s Studio Fix Powder in white? I believe it’s still called Shivering White. It’s an excellent matte powder that is just WHITE!

I hadn't thought about mixing a mineral foundation into a moisturizer, what an interesting idea! I'll have to try it out. Fix+ is basically a toner so it does have some beneficial skincare ingredients like antioxidants. So it's a slightly upgraded version of water. ;) My tip is to check skincare out with Paula's Choice Beautypedia. They do the work of investigating ingredients and concentrations, etc. I never take the time to memorize all of the irritating vs beneficial plant oils and such so I definitely depend on their reviews for my laziness. :P
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
nicole - pale and freckled Be careful! I did a video awhile back where I said that about Fix + and the skincare people freaked out LOL! Yes, that’s exactly what it is. I agree 100%. Also the Beautypedia tip is great but I take them with a grain of salt and always tell people to START there but then think for themselves. I have a love/hate thing with Paula B. Her reviews are thorough but she leans into being TOO opinionated and I think she tries to sound shocking sometimes as a sales technique. (I never like “black and white” style opinions.) The reviews don’t take professionals into consideration at all! Anything that’s too “out there” like a MAC Cream Color Base will often get a negative review simply because either her or her team don’t know what to do with them LOL!
@frecknic6 жыл бұрын
Dustin Hunter Oh totally, especially with the makeup reviews. I basically look to see if there's irritants or what have you ingredient-wise and ignore the actual review. I have disagreed with their makeup reviews more often than not. 🤪

My tip -- I'm pale AF so I don't use bronzer bc I find it heads straight into Oompa Loompa territory. Instead if I want to look like I have gotten some sun (*hiss, recoils, creeps back to cave*) I use blush -- specifically blush with red tones. Top of cheekbones, across the bridge of my nose. Literally every time I do this, people ask me what exciting thing I've been up to. (Netflix in my cave, obviously but they don't know that.)
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
Daena O. Totally! I’m the same way. 🙌 That’s actually why if I’m doing makeup on someone for the first time one of the questions I ask is, “Can you tan or does it just burn and go away?” If the answer to that is that you burn and then it goes away (and I’m going to “bronze”) I go for red tones - it looks more natural. Cooler tones have a hard time finding bronzers but we get ALL the electric hot pinks we want so SUCK IT everyone else! LOL!!!

You are correct, a warm shower in hot weather is better. Heat and hot water cause blood vessels to dilate while cold temperatures and cold water cause blood vessels to constrict. Dilated blood vessels release heat. Constricted blood vessels hold in heat. When it is cold outside your body works to keep internal temperature warm. In warm weather, a warm shower will dilate blood vessels and release heat to keep the body cool. You could start your shower cool to feel cooler, then raise to just above room temp and TAH-DAH! Your body should now be prepped for releasing more heat. I don't know how long the effect lasts, but yeah, you are totally right - warm weather = warm shower :-)

@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
First thank you! 🤗🤗🤗 Second, I don’t find it too salty but I also don’t use it ALL the time and I don’t spray it on my bare skin, otherwise it could be bothersome I suppose? It’s certainly less salt than a walk on the beach though and I wouldn’t complain about that normally either Haha!

I use a really long wearing waterproof sunscreen as a primer under my makeup. Since its waterproof, I don't really have to worry about my face melting during the summer. Also, I can go without powdering my face all over when I use it because of how well my makeup lasts. Final thing is that well, its sunscreen and we should all be using sunscreen.

Hey Dustin, great video as always! I'd love your professional opinion on these new gen filtery foundations like Urban Decay Naked and the Fenty liquid foundation. When I say filtery, I mean those that set into a plastic-feeling film on your face that's supposed to blur everything and act as a real-life filter. On my face they tend to separate, but maybe I just haven't figured out how to use them properly. Is there a way to make them work without spending even more on primers and powders? I believe a foundation should work for itself, not be a 5-step routine if you already do proper skincare.
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
I agree with your sentiment. I haven’t tried either of those. There are SO many reviews of the Fenty one I haven’t even bothered to look at it LOL! I’ll keep this in mind tho. Are there any others besides those two that you think fit into that category or give you the same issues??

My tip is if you have a synthetic wig that's getting ratty at the ends. Brushing a little silicone based lube from mid length to the ends will give your wig another 2 or 3 more months wear.
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
pobstrel Good one! I have done that before for getting knots out. Silicone lube and hair smoothing fluid are essentially the same thing. For YEARS I used an Aveda hair smoothing fluid as lube actually 🤭 You could leave it around the house or carry it with you and it didn’t look as suspicious as a bottle of lube would when left on the end table of the living room. Haha!

I think we need the wisdom of your experience and knowledge of ingredients in makeup! I only know to look for lanolin coz I'm allergic to it, lol. Actually, I have no's for rosacea too, so I do look out for oil and such in face stuff too. Not makeup, but nails: my unconventional thing is to push back my cuticles with my nails (shock horror!) - it's supposed to be a no-no, but I swear it's much easier and less dangerous than using a metal cuticle pusher, so there :P

Someone recently told me that using a silicone primer will prevent my hydrating foundation from working because the two are like oil and water. If true, what is the best “spackling “ primer to use with a hydrating foundation? I have lines and creases I’d like to smoothe over (fill in). 😁 Tips I’ve learned from my ageless 80+ great aunt: Noxema, Ponds, Palmers, and Oil of Olay. They work. And they’re cheap!
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
You know I think SO much anti-aging stuff must be complete crap haha! I think it’s got to be genetics and how you take care of yourself; how much you’re exposed to the sun and the weather, how much sleep you get, how much water you drink, etc. I use Ponds and I love it. I still like Noxema though it’s “supposed” to be horrible for your skin. I think the truth must be you never know... find what works for you and try not to stress out it? Haha! Something like that anyway. Re: the question you were asking though... I’ve never heard of a silicone primer preventing a hydrating foundation from working but it sounds like a sales pitch and far too much of a generalization for it to be accurate. Even dermatologists don’t have all the answers (I’ve been told some really stupid stuff by professionals in the past haha). Everything you’re putting on your skin is designed to hydrate and protect it from the elements. I’d say you’re doing fine. But that’s just my opinion! 😉🤗

JP M Haha thanks. Ultimately I think it’s important to be happy most of all. If piling on the skincare makes you happy then I think you’ll look your best. If ignoring it and spending your days hiking in the bright sunshine makes you happy then I think you’ll look your best! I still think sunscreen is smart if you’re in the sun for too long but I think it also depends on your - what’s the word? Heritage? Ancestry? Years ago I had a doctor who I loved and trusted and she scoffed at me for worrying about the sun but she was Puerto Rican and much darker than my cool-toned, pale-as-can-be self Haha! She could be in the sun for hours and loved to tan! I start to feel my skin burn if I’m in the sun for more than 10 minutes - I just need to be more careful. The point she always had is valid though: Do what makes YOU feel good and stop worrying about how you SHOULD look according to other people. I hope that made sense. Haha sort of a side rant LOL Thank you x

This is actually a skincare not makeup tip: Wash your hands before you wash your face. I tell people that and it's amazing how many of them get offended. I'm not calling anyone dirty, I'm saying don't make your face wash handle makeup AND hand crème.
@DustinHunter6 жыл бұрын
TeresaRebecca Cunningham Haha! That’s a good one. Skincare tips are hard to give because everyone is different and people DO get offended more easily when it comes to skincare for some reason! (Any time I’ve talked about a skincare product on KZbin I end up having to deal with fighting and arguments in the comments section LOL) Fun fact (NOT a tip haha): I hardly ever use soap or face wash on my face, just a warm washcloth. Ever since I was a kid. I had clear skin throughout high school (that’s likely just genetics though) and I wore a TON of makeup back then too!

I still do the "mom" thing of moistening a qtip with spit to clean up winged liner/mascara smudges etc. Only on myself mind you, I'm not a heathen. But spit fixes a multitude of makeup booboo's. Also when mascara is getting a bit old and dried out I'm too lazy to do the warm glass of water trick to melt it down. Just tuck it into your bra if you're wearing one, or I tend to air cross legged when I do my makeup so I'll just tuck it into the crook of my knee and let my body heat warm it up.

Makeup trick. 1. If makeup falls off your nose easy or u have a cold. Put eyeshadow primer on and around your nose before foundation (I like smashbox one). 2. Mix a primer and lipstick to make a cream blush that stays on. 3. Use a highlighting pencil (smashbox again) to put in deep wrinkles to help them fade. Pat out. Thats all I got. I've only been a "pro" for 3 years I'm lame
