Swimming in the Blue Hole is okay if you're wearing a life jacket and not in the middle. People have died in it due to the under currents. I've swam along the shoreline of it and it was a lot of fun. As long as you're being safe, everything will be okay.

Marlea Matarese how come it is so dangerous of it is only deep and cold as it gets deeper? Besides obviously drowning but can’t that happen anywhere?

RuanStiga I don’t remember the *exact* reasoning but it has something to do with the really strong rip currents that are underneath due to how finely milled the sand is

@@ruanstiga5273 the problem is the water is very beautiful and misleading. Most of these sand pits are man made and have shelves that drop down ten feet at a time until you reach the bottom of the pit, and some of these pits can be hundreds of feet deep. You can't see the shelves because time has eroded the sand away giving it the appearance of a crystal water lake. Also the water is cold, so cold in fact that if a human body was to sink down to the bottom it would most likely not decompose. People have drowned here, and in many pits just like it around the state of New Jersey, Round Valley lake is one of the examples and is infamous for taking lives in this manner. The water can be 60 degrees in one spot and then ten feet below it can drop down to the mid 40's or lower. This is a recipe for disaster if the water is cold enough because your body will begin to cramp preventing you from being able to swim out of the middle of the lake, you stop to take a rest not knowing that hypothermia is slowly kicking in and before you know it your a memory R.I.P. even with a life vest on your taking a risk so just stay at the shore and enjoy the scenery.. And if you do decide to swim in it, you better enjoy the hell out of it cause I believe the fine is $1,000 if the cops catch you. Also look out for the mud bogs with pits the drop down 6 feet, your taking a hike alone and fall in one of these you better know how to get out or you might never be seen again.! Respect the Pine Barrens and remember your just a visitor in one of the most beautiful but lethal places in the great Garden State.

There are no trespassing signs here. You are not aloud to swim in them. They are old mines that are filled with water. Some are 300ft deep. The walls are unstable and drop off unexpected. We had 3 drowning this year already.

The Devil's Blue Hole is in a state park and swimming is not legal. Someone suggested divers exploring it, also illegal :( There are a lot of stories about it being bottomless but how can that be in sand? It never freezes! I dragged a kayak in there one snowy freezing day. It's that beautiful blue because it's spring fed so that keeps it ice free so that rumor is true. My sonar and drop camera found the bottom at 9' so it's not bottomless.

South Jersey born and raised. I lived here 60 years I would never think of moving out of my beloved state. The Pine Barrens and the beautiful southern NJ beaches are my backyard playgrounds. There is one spot on my bucket list in northwestern New Jersey in the mountain range it's a place called Sunfish Lake it's on the top of a mountain it's a very very treacherous terrain you need a guide to get up there which takes approximately 4 hours. You must be an experienced hiker but the hike up the mountain is well worth it, they say Sunfish Lake is absolutely beautiful with pristine crystal clear waters. I guess it would be a perfect place to to die after that dangerous hike surrounded by bears, cougars, bobcats, rattlesnakes and cliffs.

There are bears and snakes on the hike up to Sunfish. The trail starts in Delaware Water Gap but isn't marked until you find the parking lot. Great hike on a hot day, plenty of shade and pools to soak but don't slide down the falls. The Rangers are tired of carrying the broken bodies out :(

There is a reason. Those ponds have muck bottoms. If you touch with your feet it’s hard to remove, like quicksand. They are death ponds. That is why.
