Uncovering the Hidden Fault Gigabyte Overlooked: RTX 4090 X1 to X16 Fix

In this videos, we dive into the repair of Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme RTX 4090. This card was reported as running in X1 instead of X16. The irony is that this GPU was sent to Gigabyte for RMA and was returned back saying that there was no fault found. The user being upset about the whole ordeal sent the card to me in the hope of getting it fixed and we did not disappoint.

So here it goes... I have fixed many GPUs in X2, X4, and X8 on RTX 20 series and 30 series GPUs however this error of GPU running specifically in X1, I came across last was on a GTX 1070 and it gave a display in X1 and showed X1 as well. So this time when I installed this RTX 4090 on my test bench it did not detect and I was surprised. I thought something was wrong with my motherboard. So I took my working GTX 1080 I had and tested it with one cap removed from the second pair and it showed X1. Then i took my RTX 3060Ti and did the same thing and it did not detect same as the RTX 4090. On the RTX 3060Ti, I then tested the other combination of removing the 3th pair cap and it detected and showed as X2 just like the Quadro video i put up. RTX 3060 Ti is gen 4. So the conclusion is A gen 4 GPU when installed on a gen 3 motherboard and if the 1st or 2nd pair caps are missing, the GPU will not be detected but on a Gen 4 motherboard will be detected if the second pair is damaged. The rest of it remains the same as the table I shared in my other video.

thanks for taking this task and fixing my card, Gigabyte RMA service really let me down this time and im definitely not buying another one of their products after this, they brushed off my concerns and their technicians complacency resulted in them missing a very easy fix. the fact that i had to send my card from the middle east all the way to west coast USA back and forth and had to pay hundreds in shipping costs with them to just not take this issue, or their job, seriously is very upsetting. Thanks again for your work.

You know that Gigabyte RMA service is not dealing with damage made by the customer for any reason and they are not a repair shop. They are fixing whatever faults that are their fault not whatever it comes their way. You should have been aware you gave a mechanical shock to your card and because of this, the card was damaged. Do not shift the blame to Gigabyte. They have their flaws but this time it is your fault not theirs.

To avoid detection problems in the future, use INTEL only motherboard with CPU generation 7 or lower if am not mistaken.

Yes I use i7 gen 3. Old hardware of Intel is best to use as a testbench.

You don’t act like you’re the only one on the planet that can fix electronics at a component level. Yes the card was unopened. May have bumped into something. This pair of caps is exposed beyond the back cover making it vulnerable to getting knocked off easily.

Great video again my brother! I used Intel hardware before for repairs. I have switched to AMD R5 5600G and it works fine under UEFI and CMS. Easy to switch in BIOS. No big deal.

why is gpu-z showing x16 3.0 (Gen 3) when the board is x16 4.0 (gen 4) when the 4090 is underload and its a gen 4 card, still something amiss ????

Hi boss! Can I take a minute of your time? Do you have an idea about a RTX 2070 card that works on a X1 PCI Express Riser but not working on a X16 on the motherboard? Pex, 1.8V and Core / Memory aren't present when plugged on the motherboard. But on a PCI Express Riser (X1) the Card Works...

Check all the data lines in diode mode on PCIE in front. There is a possibility one of the data lines on the PCIE might not be working, open line or short.

Yes you can. You can use any GPU on any intel or AMD motherboard. For example in this video i was testing the RTX 4090 on my test bench which is a very old motherboard. The CPU i was using was i7 3rd generation. Your motherboard supports 10th and 11th gen CPU. The PCI is gen 4 compared to my old test bench which is using gen3. You are good to go. everything would depend on the CPU you use. for the chipset of the motherboard i assume you may be using either an intel i3 or i5 CPU. for this the 4060 Ti is better suited with minimal bottleneck.

I'm considering to replace this i3 10105 cpu with i7 11700 cpu and will be using arc A770 or rx 7900gre or rtx 4070 super. Will this be ok with asus H510-E MB? Just want to reassure once again. What should i use i7 11700 or i9 10900 with above gpu mentioned? i thank you for solving my confusion.

Either of the i7 is good enough for the GPUs you have planned. If it was me i would save some money and go for i7 10900.

hello. do u know what is common fault starter for THERM_OVERT signal from GPU on asus gpus? i have many asus card with this signal from gpu

My understanding from your message is that the GPU overheats. If the GPU is overheating then the first thing to check is the thermal paste. May be it requires a replacement. If pads have been replaced then there is a possibility that the pads are oversize and the cooler is not making contact with the core.

@@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql i repair GPUs. this signal come after half second. because of it, PEX goes down. I suspect bad temp sensor reading so maybe core sensor is bad.but today i start it and all voltages was good for about 30seconds so even balls under gpu can be.

and one help. Asus RTX3060 mats pass, nvmt pass, mods pass. bios flashed. but when drivers is loaded it have lines in picture on every video output

This one is difficult to judge. It's a tricky one and would love to have this card to examine further. As you repair GPUs then I assume you have installed it correctly and pads are of correct size. In this case the only other suspect is the core.

This is the issue with the core. No need to spend more time on this one. I had these issues recently and even after reball and memory replacement did not fix the issue. Mats passed, nvmt only warnings and mods also passed. But after loading into windows stressing the card shows artifacts and then black screen.

I think at this stage it could only be the bios has been flashed with a higher voltage one or has become corrupt, your motherboard is too old and doesn't support something like uef or something that this card doesn't like

It would not be a straight swap. You will need a converter or a fan hub. like NZXT can be used but with a fan hub. The normal case fans are 3 pin headers and the ones on the waterforce are 4 pin headers. When doing the wiring you will need to be very careful as one of the pin connects to the GPU core directly. wrong voltage passes and the GPU core is history. I have one donner which came in after doing it wrong. I would only do it if i absoultly have to.

I assume the fan controller is the motherboard fan controller you are referring to? Yes it will work but the fan speed will be controlled by the motherboard. You will have to set a general fan curve on the motherboard. It will not be as effective as the one controlled by the GPU but it will work.

I use a lot of products of Gigabyte. My test bench and my personl PC motherboard is also gigabyte. The need to pay attention to the service quality of the service center they outsource it to. This techinician who ever was working on this card did not even test the card. otherwise they use a sticker indicating why they refuse the warranty.

"simple" is not simple if it takes a lot of experience to know what is the precise simple problem E.g. The difference between a large team of engineers taking a month and still not fixing a machine. Meanwhile an experienced senior engineer alone knows the problem is just one simple screw after 30 minutes. The screw is simple. Knowing its the screw thats the problem is complex.

@@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql I have clients who swear they didn't do anything wrong, yet video cards are coming to me with missing components, motherboards with improperly seated memory bars... They always want a free or cheap repair. Sending a video card back to be repaired for free automatically makes me test it and if there's a missing component I would send it back telling the customer to fuck off just the way Gigabyte did. I won't say a word about the real issue because nobody actually pays for finding the fault.

I have not come across this issue so far. I also have relife mask and use that one too. Clear resin is also good. Works well. If clear resin works for you I would suggest you continue using it. Initially I faced issues with the mechanic mask with my other UV lamp it used to repaint soft since I changed my UV lamp I did not face any issues. One of the viewers had suggested to me this UV lamp in the comments in one of the videos and it hardens really quickly.

The owner says he had performance issues with the GPU from the day he bought the GPU. After months of investigating he found out that his GPU was running in X1 instead of X16.
