"like you are snorting the movie" Fantastically articulated and how you build your points is great to see. Never change Maggie!

It's so odd seeing Maggie sat on the floor by a couch while talking about one of the most stressful and panic-inducing films of the century

Have you seen Portrait of a Lady on Fire? One of the best movies of last year for sure, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. It's currently on Hulu if you need a way to watch it.

On the floor next to the couch is by far the most underrated sitting location haha. No idea why but there's an extra level of happiness and good vibes down there.

I would compare this movie to watching somebody hang from a ledge for two hours until the end when they drop. A kaleidoscope of tension. Sandler has one of the more curious brands. He's perfectly happy making dumb comedies and then every few years he'll drop a great dramatic performance out of the blue. And he's totally unpretentious about it. He's not thirsty for award recognition. (*cough*Jim Carrey*cough*) Or he doesn't appear to be anyway. He's also got the reputation for being one of the nicest people in Hollywood. Just a guy happy to cash huge checks, give his friends work and hit the occasional indie role out of the park. I'll always root for him.

Been waiting for this review for a while! You should do Good Time, as well - that one gets better each time I watch it, would be interested to hear your thoughts. I haven’t seen any of the Safdies earlier films like Heaven Knows What, but Good Time and Uncut Gems are master classes in stressful cinema.

Would be very interesting to see what your take is on 'The Counselor' by Ridley Scott. The movie doesn't seem to have a lot of fans. It is disliked, presumably, because the screenplay doesn't take you by the hand and guide you through the movie. I am really curious about what your thoughts would be on this film. Anyways... just a recommendation.

Thanks for reviewing this. It really is a very tense, and exciting film to watch. One of my favorites of 2019. I would love to hear you put together some film essays on some of your favorite movies. You're very articulate and passionate that it just seeps through the screen. Keep up the great work, and thank you.

It pretty interesting because watching Uncut Gems, I felt a lot like how you described Joker (2019) in your review. I don't really think it's bad, but it's also pretty on the nose and constantly hits the same note, which makes it kind of dull after a while ...

Hi @Deepfocuslens, love your reviews - can I suggest you review the films of Maya Deren? She was an Avant-Garde filmmaker, obvious influence on Lynch, and all of her work is short-firm and available for free on KZbin. I'd love to hear your thoughts on her, thanks.

Adam Sandler is actually a really good actor. He just has some of the worst career decision-making choices ever! Unfortunately, in my opinion, Uncut Gems is not his greatest performance ever. It's his third-best performance ever. That being The Meyerowitz Stories 2nd and Punch-Drunk Love at number one. P.S please do a review of Punch-Drunk Love! It is the perfect movie! That is all.
@chrisjfox87159 ай бұрын
“…worst career decision-making choices ever!” Talk about an overstatement. Sandler’s career has progressed just fine. The fingerprint of his career is actually one to mimic, albeit the fact that there will never be another Sandler. He continues to be mostly adored.

I’m a fan of this genre and style. Love 70s film. I love this general premise: man of borderline ethics on the run to FIX the stuff he’s f’ed up and make that FINAL BIG SCORE, while the floor keeps falling away beneath him. BUT: I wanted more of a glimpse of the human. I wanted the film to have another gear. It was stuck in HIGH. Same with Good Time. In the end I felt I never got to know the protagonists. So, both movies that I should’ve liked but ultimately did not. Kinda of the opposite of your take.

I saw this film 7 times in theaters. I'm not the biggest Adam Sandler fan,but his performance blew me away. A lot of people found him too unlikable and annoying. I don't think a character has to be likable to be compelling. The film is very anxiety inducing. That was the point of characters screaming their dialogue over one another. It is a film that doesn't really let up. It's very well shot and edited. I can't wait to see what else the Safdie brothers make.

@NaughtyVampireGod4 жыл бұрын
It's all about the craving for APPROVAL. Probably the NEED to such destructive things such as risk and danger are also at play here. SPOILER: Anyone who saw Bad Lieutenant (with Harvey Keitel) basically knew how this one was going to end. Anyway Sandler played an EMOTIONAL VAMPIRE in this one. He needed a lot from people but also GAVEa lot in return which is why people were naturally drawn to him. I think many of us - especially if we are from cetain areas of the country - know people like this. They can be great friends, but also very trying and frustrating as well. Everything is an ANGLE with them. And, yeah, I think it's ok to say he's JEWISH. Honestly that's a big part of the film as well. A bit surprised you didn't mention this since the movie bangs u over the head with his Jewish background. It's very Jewish movie - not that you have to be Jewish to appreciate it . . .

@deepfocuslens - o.k. Do you have any "smart friends"? If you do not, I don't envy you. All of my smart friends are not human, big surprise. You would benefit from the company of an African Gray Parrot, smarter than most humans. Now listen very carefully. Your inner life is a gazillion times more interesting than the "movies". DMT told you so. I have one human friend in Colorado. I step away step away from the microwave field. Your "real friends" may not be human, I'm not trying to scare you, I've many non-human friends who are a gazillion times smarter and funnier than people. Inner Life - hey, a Beatles song. Get an instrument and bloody play it - play it badly. Depression when transformed into music will break your heart. I cry every song I sing. Except the funny ones.

I liked the cold open, but as soon as Adam Sandler appeared, with the frenetic pacing and over the topic music, with characters talking over each other, I knew I was going to really hate the movie. A shame, because I loved Good Time

Anthony Martensen I was looking forward to the movie because of Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems was my most anticipated movie of last year. I just meant that I hated the movie 5 minute into it, when they first showed him and all the basketball players.. I don’t mind unlikable characters, but I thought Sandler’s performance was downright annoying.
