When I awoke, I was surrounded by darkness. I groped aimlessly, met by cold stone. In the distance I could hear scratching and shuffling. Summoning my courage, I called out. What responded was no mere man, and it wasn't alone. First one ungodly wail. Instantly my stomach knotted. Predictably, like frogs in heat, a chorus erupted. When every hair on my body raised it wasn't due to the prospect of ten thousand gnashing teeth. I knew where I was now. At the time, the job I did sounded like a bloody life changer. Just forge some papers. Make them look right and true. Such a deed requires immediate relocation. Far, far away. You run. Somewhere beautiful. I bet it was the water I drank. Anyhow. This isn't the random dive I fell asleep in. This is Dwindler's Halls. A labyrinth some four miles underneath the surface, built from marble and completely void of light. Now four miles down doesn't sound so bad, but let me tell you, that deep it gets very cold. Unbearably cold. Hypothermia can be a rather rude awakening. You awaken here, and rule number one is not to panic. No sudden movement or wasted energy. Rule number two? You stay quiet. I guess you could say that confusion leads to error. Luckily I already understand rules three and four. Keep moving and mimic their shuffle. Rule five? Forget about escaping. They'll let you out after you forget who you are. Forget what you know. Forget everything but hunger and fear. If you're lucky you can live off the scraps of the ones who break the first four rules. Ironically, I always did wonder what it would take to eat another human being. It's not entirely unheard of. I just never expected to find out where my line is. Oh no, no, no. I won't be another fool who forged a birth right and became feces in a dungeon for his troubles. The last thing I heard was a jingling of keys. Someone dumps us. It's just a matter of finding out the schedule. Then? Revenge. Atreus Singari
