We visit Takamaru a popular local restaurant famous for their affordable and fresh seafood. With $40 to spend we see just how far our money can go! We order Takamaru’s 3 wooden bowls for 2980 yen which are made up of uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) sushi, maguro (tuna) sashimi and boiled crab meat and scallops. We also sample their raw octopus with wasabi and minced tuna meat with natto (fermented soy beans) for 500 yen each. All the seafood we eat is fresh and tasty- the tuna sashimi in particular is delicious as are the raw octopus and minced tuna with natto. The restaurant is boisterous, loud and the perfect place to have a few drinks and feast on Japanese seafood for a fair price. Highly recommended!
Note that the ‘Wooden bowls’ are only available for dinner (after 4pm or so). At lunch time there is a set menu option.
Where we ate:
Takamaru
〒160-0023 Tokyo, Shinjuku, 西新宿7丁目15−1 アパライトビル1階

Im going to have to take your word for it on this one. The presentation was beautiful and "eat with your eyes". I guess for quality seafood it was a good price, but it really looked like a whole lot of tasting plates more than a meal. I noticed that alot of the Restaurants you have eaten in this series it seems "communal dining" is the norm, is that just a logistical thing or the way Japanese eat? I could imagine it being difficult to film when in close proximity to fellow diners. 👍
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brilliant But Blue, thanks for watching! Communal dining is quite common in Japan like in most Asian cultures but you’re right filming can be harder in Japan. Often it’s bar style eating and quite cramped quarters and having a camera in an environment like that can be so intrusive for other diners so we tend to steer clear of filming some of those meals (like ramen, sushi bars etc) 😄 Cheers, Sheena

HI Thomas and Sheena, is there any tipping?
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 6 жыл бұрын
Hi 1981cherokee1, thanks for watching- hope you enjoyed it! It’s not customary to tip in Japan and can be considered rude. High end restaurants may add a service charge though. Hope you like what we have coming up! Cheers, Sheena

It seems to me that Japanese food is as much about the presentation and experience than the flavor alone.

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena i’ve tried a lot in Japan this spring (the food is incredible!) but natto gives me nightmares. But, my last comment was a little ‘play on Words’ sheena tastes the uni and calls it UNI-que 3 times in a row. Haha! Keep on making this great content!

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena we have been to osaka for 1 week, 2 days in Kyoto and 8 days in Tokyo and i must say that osaka really blew us away! Definitely my favourite city in the world! Tokyo is soo big and doesnt have that ‘magical touch’ wich osaka has for me. So next year i’ll be back in osaka, no doubts about that! Oh and i even had the crazy chicken ramen where you Guys and mark wiens went! Cheers!

OMG that ramen changed my life 😍 I LOVED it so much! Hope you did too! What a brilliant trip! It's a pretty special feeling when you just fall in love with a place isn't it? Feeling a real affinity with a city other than your own home. I bet you'll have the best time when you return! Cheers, Sheena

a little advice for you. i like your videos in japan. but you can really omit that part in 0:20 as its a well known fact and if you're gonna repeat it every video. its unnecessary and you can just dub it over a more exciting clip or something.

Hi JD Krasinki, thanks for watching and we’re glad you are enjoying our Japan series. We do the same sort of intro in order to set the scene as the majority of our viewers are new eyes- they’re either new to our channel or aren’t subscribers and therefore don’t follow our travels nor know who we are and what Chasing a Plate is about. This is why each video is filmed to a bit of a format. Hope you continue to enjoy our content. Cheers, Sheena
