I love the simplicity of this solution. Maybe you could help us out by building a larger frame to hold the hammer and die, so it could be freehand, or a little stand with a foot pedal. Thanks for all of your tips!

The Harbor Freight pneumatic planishing hammer, the framed one, is still $59 and change at this writing. However, your assembly here is probably what a hobbiest needs first and most, for reasons you made clear. Thanks for the great idea and how-to!
@HotRodHippie6 жыл бұрын
A good point. You could pull the power unit out of that HF hammer and use it in this fashion as well. I really don't care for the HF hammer but it can be better than nothing. This could be done cheaper if folks had say an old air hose and hammer they don't make use of. Things like that.

I agree with most of the comments I have read. I have used a hand held a few times and it is a great tool for some jobs. It is the way to go for many diyers. If you weld in a patch panel that you can get to the backside it is s very useful tool. With some square tubing you can build a pretty nice stand and have more uses. This is a very informative and useful video. Thanks for the good work. I subscribed and will be watching you more often.

Thank you very much. It definitely isn't the end all be all tool, but it can really help out in some scenarios. I have access to a "real" planishing hammer and still use this setup from time to time myself.

This us a good video. What I have been using is an air palm nailer for this use. The tools must be homemade but otherwise this works very well. You don't need the valve as the palm nailer has a valve built into the unit. This makes up a very shallow arrangement and you can get into really small areas. Thank you for this video.
@HotRodHippie6 жыл бұрын
Glenn Felpel there is actually a product that is like a palm nailed but is meant for Planishing. It is called the Johnson Ez Hammer. Probably a lot cheaper picking up a palm nailed and making tooling though. The EZ Hammer is $350.

The framed version is probably a “little “ easier on the carpal tunnel issue
@HotRodHippie4 жыл бұрын
Better on the fillings in your teeth too... A stand mount is superior in most ways. This is just for folks who don't have the space for a pedestal mount or ability to make their own frames. Maybe I should try making a hand frame for this.

I am looking for a planishing hammer that I can use on 1/16 steel, or even 2mm (80 thou), do you know what the requirements for the Air Hammer would be... would the unit shown in the video be sturdy enough or would I need a heavy duty unit. I thought this would be an easy question, normally if you want to buy a power tool you can find a guide to help you choose the correct size for your application but I am having real trouble finding info on this for Air Hammers for Planishing. Thanks, Matt.
@HotRodHippie4 жыл бұрын
Air hammers for Planishing aren't really the proper tools. This is just a budget work around to get the job done. So you won't find anyone making claims about their strength for this purpose. The light duty units will do an ok job Planishing 16ga., but .080 is asking a fair bit of one. I'd consider a larger hammer for your needs but then you are getting into a problem area where the hammer may hit too hard and stretch the metal too quickly. True Planishing hammers have short throws and lighter hits but do so very rapidly. Stronger air hammers are usually the opposite of that, hitting harder with longer strokes. Also using a unit handheld on that thick of material my be a bit more tedious and provide less desirable results. You may want to look at the AirBoss units. They are purpose made Planishing hammers so the price reflects that but they are pretty reasonable as far as quality Planishing hammer prices are concerned. www.airbosstools.com/products If the AirBoss units are more than you want to spend I'd say just build the unit like I showed and try it. For the less than $100 price tag you don't find many other options so all you can do is try it and see if it works for your needs.

Hey Hippie, great video, question is the foot petal adjustable for air control? Thanks Bill
@HotRodHippie4 жыл бұрын
The foot pedal takes the place of the trigger on the hammer after it is removed. It is just an on/off switch for control. The regulator is for finer control adjustment.

As for your inlet: I'd weld a block of alum. over the hole then drill and tap to size. (I'm sure you know how to use a pin to align the block to the hole.)
@HotRodHippie6 жыл бұрын
Agreed it would be good to have more meet and that would do it. However you'd want to disassemble the tool to make sure you don't damage anything internally, and TIG welding on a piece adds a lot to the project. Fine for you or me but I was aiming to keep this simple for beginners. Still a solid suggestion. 👍
@joshtonry42916 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or like he said in the video to leave more handle material on the airhammer frame when you cut off the handle, that way you have more threads for the air hose.

I'm definitely going to make one before I start my next project. Can this be used for dent repairs as long as their is access and at a lower air pressure or do you think it may get out of hand and create problems.
@HotRodHippie6 жыл бұрын
It can be used for dent repair. However it can do just as much damage as it can help. Use of a planishing hammer takes some practice and experience. I would recommend trying it on test panels before using it on the parts you intend to have as your finished product. Maybe even say pick up a junk fender at a scrap yard and practice on that a bit. Knock a dent in it, cut it and weld up the cut, then try it out. I've used this tool on various projects since I made it, but it isn't something I use everyday by any means. It is extremely helpful when needed, but it is hard for me to explain off hand when it is needed. Hopefully I can get to a video about recommended uses for it sometime soon.

So compressors can be had for less than $75 now a days ?!!!!
@HotRodHippie5 ай бұрын
Some tools have pre-requisites. If you are trying to restore a car to the level that you want a Planishing Hammer, you should have an air compressor. If you don't have one you will NOT be able to use so many tools that would make the job easier. So no I don't include the cost of an air compressor in the price every single air tool I'm going to show you, that is just a silly point to make. A ratchet requires a socket set to work. Does that mean I should include a socket set in the purchase price when I review a ratchet? A cordless drill without drill bits isn't much use, etc etc etc.

I'm a custom car builder for a living. It has had zero impact in my career. Heck when I used to own my own business selling tools customers told me that I looked like I fit in better (I was rather young then). The only thing it does is show me who wants to judge based on appearance. My work speaks for itself.
@BruceBusby6 жыл бұрын
@@HotRodHippie my comments were not aimed at you. You're choices are made. I'm glad that you like your tattoos. I really doubt you would hear any negative comments in person. My comments were more a caution to people that haven't yet made the choice to convert themselves in tattoos. If you're a great fabricator, and plan to do that for the rest of your life (if you're able), you'll be fine. But... don't be fooled. If you'd like a career change at some point in your future... anything with a suit and tie is off limits to you. Take care if your hands, you require them for your future. Sorry to be the voice of reason. There are a few things that people prejudge others. Its human nature. Being fat and poorly dressed indicates lazy and slovenly. Potentially low IQ and low standards.
