A celebration of mythology, rather than history or religion. King William was supported by the Pope. The conflict itself was not a religious one, with considerable amount of Catholics and Protestants fighting on both sides, along with foreign mercenaries from Germany, the Netherlands, France and Denmark. The Orange Lodges were formed in 1795 by the English Ascendancy in an effort of "divide and conquer". It was designed to prevent both sides of the divide forming a coalition under the United Irishmen. Ulster Presbyterians, or any other Protestant dissenters, were not permitted to join for the first four decades, only those of the Anglican faith were allowed to gain membership. Why else did a quarter of a million Ulster-Scot Presbyterians emigrate from Ireland in the 18th century? It was due to the religious persecution imposed on them by the Anglican Ascendancy. That's right; it wasn't just native Irish Catholics that were oppressed by the wealthy landowner class. When the Act of Union was proposed in 1801, many of the Orange Lodges voted AGAINST it. The Orange Walk is supposed to commemorate the victory as the rise of the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. Yet William was supported by the Pope and the Ulster-Scot Presbyterians were not even permitted entry as they were not regarded as the equals of the Anglicans. This same ascendancy feared the United Irishmen, which sought to unite the religious sects in Ireland, and created a lodge based on mythological and simplified history to fuel sectarian hatred between the Irish people. Look at how well the policy of divide and conquer worked. All of which was aimed at maintaining the stranglehold of the Anglican, not Ulster-Scot, lords. The Orange perception on history is false. The Presbyterian ministers in Ulster who were hanged by the English for their part in attempting to break the Anglican oppression in Ireland would be sickened at their brethren for falling for such a devious ploy. They look on you now as they did back then; easily manipulated paddies.
