In Under The Glass | Season 2 Ep 5 Brett switches it up, leaving his PU/Polys on the beach, while dropping hammers on the EPS/Epoxy Slater FRK Plus.
….But is it too small? The numbers and clips say it isn’t. But Brett says it is. You be the judge!
We’re taking viewer questions for our final episode of the season called “Lessons Learned” (Episode 9) If you have a question for Brett and Trip please post it below. We may not be able to answer them all but we will pick a few and answer them in the show. Thanks for following Under The Glass!

These are so enjoyable....Just hearing Brett say he picked up and held the 5'9", I so wish you guys had just said "hey this is a review show...go put that thing in the water!!" just to see. Great stuff...I could watch these all day. Grab a Firewire Mashup in small surf and show us that one!!!

Brett kept saying he’s not a technical guy but his breakdown on surfboards is the best on the internet imo😂

Hah, true, he is humble. I think he would tell us that compared to some friends of his he isn't very technical, but I agree with you, he knows his stuff pretty darn well, clearly!

Get brett on the 5'9 and do another update on that. Slater was the same about going up in volume on that same board and he was blown away.

The weight and thickness of the 5’9” in shop felt drastically larger than the 5’8”, and even larger than the dims said. Like I’ve ridden plenty of boards recently that are 27L and didn’t feel that big. So went with 5’8” cause I knew I could surf it…. Airs are harder for me if boards to bulky.

Wow, that huge carve to avoid the yellow board drop in! I often wonder how accurate the volumes are, especially if they are hand shaped even to finish. I suspect most numbers come from the design software but small tweaks to the rails etc can make a surprisingly significant difference in volume.

It's hard to convince me that it's the board not the surfer but this series is helping me understand the technology I'm still in the camp of dementions not so much the focus on volume Thanks for sharing as always my friend Be well and God Bless 👍🤙

Whichever you have found works for you, or a combination of both, stick with it. Volume is a great tool but as you can hear when Brett is talking, a lot of other factors come into play when making a board perform how you want.

Size up I got the 6’ and wish I got the 6’2” or 6’4” It goes really good in hallow waves of pure glass but I would recommend sizing up for the everyday surf. I haven’t tried it as a quad though so that might be the key for me on it. Thing is awesome for getting vertical best feeling ever

Size up if that is what you like, nothing wrong with that at all and I can see that being sick in hollow tubes as you said. For Brett and how he wanted to surf it, he said the 5'9" felt bulkier, and wanted to be able to get the most out of the board without it feeling bogged down, and it definitely worked for him.

My usual volume would be the 6’0”. I bought the 6’1” because the original FRK at 6’1” only worked in good waves. It feels perfect. Try the next size up just out of interest, and post it…awesome surfing as ever.

Would love to see a follow up with the 5'9 especially since they say it feels under volumed.

The width and the wide point pushed me in to the 5'9 despite the liters and very glad I sized up.

Volume does equal flotation, a litre of lead floats a lot less than a litre of foam.
@REALWatersports
@REALWatersports 9 ай бұрын
Yes, the volume measures the size or displacement and not buoyancy. Luckily, most boards are made with pretty similar materials and not lead, so volume provides a useful tool for quick reference but not the end all -be all measurement as Brett says in this video

Dont fall for trends man. These short stubby surfboards are not right for the majority of surfers..theyre like riding a 6 inch plastic skateboard. Your pivoting area is so reduced it forces you to maintain max speed to hold your bottom turns, cut backs, and roadhouses..most people should be riding longer boards. Take some of the width, put in the nose. Itll help hold your speed and turns mo betta. 🤔🤙🇺🇲🇺🇦
