A World of Outlaws sprint car can reach speeds in excess of 260km/h during a race, but how does such a small vehicle manage this? This is down to the powerhouse of the car, the engine.
Tony Stewart Racing's Donny Schatz explains how his Ford Performance works from the inside out. The mandated 410-cubic inch engine (6.7 litres) produces over 900 horsepower, uses mechanical fuel injection and must run on methanol fuel.

@@HighLiner15 100% agree, everything is aftermarket, including the blocks. I know the Chevy camshaft tunnel is raised, but the blocks are still a rough copy of the SBC. Just curious whether the Ford uses a SVO Windsor block, or whether it's just a copy of the SBC which has been around forever. I'd almost guarantee most if not all of the internals would be nearly identical, if not interchangeable even. Heads are obviously different

If the Ford engine makes a few HP more than the Chevy then that is not enough to dominate the series and nobody is going to protest the engine. If Ford is able to get a sizeable HP increase and dominate the ruling bodies will find a way to outlaw the engine. IMO the Ford probably makes about the same HP as the Chevy and that is not enough to get winning Chevy teams to make a switch. Back in the day when the Fords ran canted valve Cleveland style heads, they did dominate and the rules were changed to ban canted valves like the Cleveland style. When 90% of the teams are running Chevy they don't like another brand raining on their parade.

Are you referring to the Casey Luna #10 of bygone days? That engine had grunt. Little wonder about the great Clevelands. The NHRA literally changed from small blocks to big blocks in Pro Stock to keep Glidden, Roush, Dyno Don and all the rest from dominating the '80s the way they had the '70s. If it is that Ron Shaver built 410 you are referring to with cleveland style heads that I saw run at Hanford in 1989 with Bobby Davis Jr. driving then you've taught me a lot about the history of the Ford Sprint Car engine. @@plantfeeder6677 Yep NHRA pulled that trick and Glidden answered with the "Two Week Wonder" the longer wheelbase Fairmont that was almost 400# lighter. Won first time out and was never beat that whole season.

I guess it's a way of trying to contain costs? If there's so many Chevy engines around, obviously it's going to be a cheaper option than to switch to Ford engines. A shame, because I for one would love to see a few different engine manufacturers
