Under-the-Radar Players to Watch for UAAP Season 87

As we continue our UAAP preview episodes in preparation for UAAP Season 87, we run down our under-the-radar players to watch.
Since these are under-the-radar players, don't expect to hear some big name stars or starters (unless your name is Sammy Santos hahaha).

EJ Gollena is hella underrated for dlsu. He has that team player mentality whatever he can contribute that’s his role plus a locker room guy. Plus people don’t give him Credit for his defense

I think so too. He plays hella hard and could be a breakout candidate with his slashing and energy. Lasalle will definitely need these types of players with KQ having the ball in his hands. -Maui

Doy Dungo is also my pick for DLSU, not sure lang kung under-the-radar pa siya since he’s quite known from juniors and this preseason ang ganda ng pinakita niya. Si David naman, I wouldn’t say forgotten pero masasabing bumaba ang stock niya this preseason even prior to the injury (it’s obvious that DLSU doesn’t have high confidence in him considering they recruited the one-and-done Ramiro). Gusto ko yung Josh Lazaro pick for potential offensive contribution, no choice for him but to improve in that aspect. Si Erolon ba pwede pang i-count as under-the-radar pick for Adamson hahaha, yung naalala ko lang na popular highlight niya was that buzzer beater 3 pointer to tie a game, but I think he’ll have to contribute more this season given Jerom’s departure and Sabandal possibly not playing. Sam, I feel like Belmonte is more known because Amores from JRU punched him in a preseason game. Doon ko unang narinig name niya. 😅 Side note: You guys have mentioned multiple times about JD Cagulangan likely gunning for a foreign pro contract this coming season. What do you think of his chances considering his height (5”8”/5’9”) and we’ve seen a few Filipino players from abroad na nag-PBA na? For instance, Dave Ildefonso was very honest in an interview na wala na siyang offers abroad kaya nag-PBA na siya. I wouldn’t be surprised if wala rin nag-offer kay RJ after his Japan team dropped to B2 and the way he left the KBL. Yung Avan Nava na first round pick ay from the KBL din and he wasn’t utilized there.

I'm not worried about the height for JD. SJ is thriving in the KBL and he's just as small. From our interview with SJ, it's really about adapting to what the team needs

Also, we love what we've seen from Erolon this off season. He's doing a lot more playmaking

@@Kirie01 JD Cagulangan is not all that.. he is definitely good but not KBL or Japan league’ish good…. Could see him in a PBA jersey tho

Ironically, my potential breakout players from Ateneo are my under the radar players as well. And truth to be told, THEY HAVE NO CHOICE. Bongo and Tuano were obviously behind Ballungay, Brown, Amos, Koon and Obasa in terms of clout and production, but this coming season, the Blue Eagle faithful must hope and pray that at least one of these guys step up. By the way, any word if Ateneo will parade an FSA big? If Ateneo rolls into the season with a frontline of Porter, Ong, Lazaro and Bongo, they're toast 😢 (Edited) Sorry, I was typing while watching...you touched na pala on the FSA thing for Ateneo...haaayyy

Hi Guys! I really look forward to waiting for your podcast every week. I just want to comment on your picks. 1) I disagree with your selection of Estacio and Anabo. They are competent three point shooters but make a lot of turnovers. In the whole Filoil tournament, Estacio had 17 turnovers versus 7 assists. Anabo had 8 turnovers versus 4 assists and shot 40% from the free thow line. In the semifinal game of the Asiabasket international tournament, Anabo committed four turnovers in the fourth quarter, almost letting San Beda catch up. I also don't like Gamber. He can only shoot the three when he is free; can't defend nor rebound. 2) Dungo is part of a great incoming rookie class this Season 87. Only one of them is under the radar. Ateneo - Bahay and Porter DLSU - Dungo FEU - Pre (possible Rookie of the Year & Mythical Five), Pasaol, and Daa (the real Under the Radar) NU - Garcia and Reyes UE - Mulingtapang UP - Bayla UST - Acido and Mahmoud 3) There is no Under-the -Radar player at UP. That's why there are loaded from 1 to 16. On the other hand, most of them are under-rated because lack of playing time. Regardless, I believe each one of the 16 players will play overseas professionally or be drafted in the PBA. And that will be a first in UAAP history.

We picked Anabo, Estacio, and Gamber because we know that they have holes in their games. They are not stars by any means and we don't expect them to breakout into stars. But we foresee them having roles for the upcoming season. That is under-the-radar

⁠@@bolerosph dapat sana si ONA no? Sir Gab 😂😂 but for me sa FEU kahit rookie.. si Adam Nakai di ko nakita laro nia sa Pre-Season but yun highlights niya speaks volume eh, na high caliber siya can jump and can shoot.

Bagunu???? duuuuhhh. hahaha. we FEU alumni's hated him because he's soft like a cotton, veteran playing like a rookie. same with Ona..haha. great pick except Bagunu..haha. wala sila pick for FEU. but i feel Royce Alforque will contribute this season based on his last few games in the off season improve a lot decision making wise kahit papano and his offense too.. he will be the key guarding the opposite best guard players.

For me, the under the radar player for UP would be Denzel Walker. This guy is a complete player. He can score and defend. If he plays as a 2 guard, he will be a mismatch to most teams in the UAAP.

Not sure if he has recovered from his illness and/or injuries. Hopefully he will be since Ateneo lacks depth in the front court. -Maui
