I like how some of the lyrics cast the kobolds in a sympathetic light. “In spite of the blood that was spilled before you whet your blades, you thirst for more.” It’s a nice reminder that the kobolds didn’t fire the first shot in this conflict, Limsa did when they started colonizing their lands, both during their initial establishment, and when they broke their treaties after the calamity.

In one of the old casual interviews, the devs were asked whether they hid anything in-game, Soken admitted that the draft for this song had a not so subtle english swearword that the QA team caught when they tested the trial. I think the lyrics had "bow down overdweller" was originally along the lines of "bow down motherfucker" when Koji Fox sang it, because I can imagine Soken and Koji Fox do this.

Under the Weight is a very nostalgic track for me because there is an epic tale attached to it. Allow me to cast your minds way back to pre-Heavensward. Seven Hells, this was even before Rogue and Ninja were added in ARR patches. Jobs played very differently and role actoins were cross-class abilities instead! It was the wild west of FFXIV. I was a Dragoon main for ARR and Heavensward. And early ARR Dragoon was quite possibly the worst job in the game's history because jumps had animation lock and actually took several seconds to execute. You had no invulnerability period either. Oh, and the netcode was even more of a mess than it is today. Now that the stage is set, onto our story. I was progressing through the ARR MSQ, and I got to Titan. Was struggling for days trying to clear the fight because it was an actual hurdle back in those days. Party members didn't return to the arena when they were knocked off to be revived. So the instance where I triumphed over the Lord of Crags went like this. My party was a Paladin, a Black Mage, a White Mage, and myself as Dragoon. We had wiped a few times already and were getting pretty exhausted. We steeled ourselves for one final attempt because we were getting close. We get Titan past the heart phase with zero casualties. We're all feeling really good! But then things start going downhill. Black Mage gets lagged and gets hit by a landslide, knocking them off. Our DPS was still decent and the White Mage is alive so not the worst that could happen. Around 15-20%, the White Mage gets clipped by a landslide, knocking them off. Things have gotten serious, now! Here is where cross-class abilities come into the picture. Paladin had access select Conjurer abilities, including Cure. So they could do a timy bit of healing. Paladin also had access to Marauder abilities. Most importantly here, Bloodbath, which healed 10% of damage dealt by GCDs and auto-attacks. The Paladin did not have a huge MP pool, so Cure was only helpful for so long. Dragoon had access to Marauder and Pugilist cross-class abilities. Which included the aforementioned Bloodbath, but also Fracture (a GCD DoT from Marauder), and Second Wind (an oGCD heal from Pugilist). These abilities allowed the Paladin and I to sustain ourselves for a little bit longer. At around 10%, the Paladin runs out of MP. We're both now on heavily borrowed time. Paladin finally falls at around 7% remaining, Titan now turning his stone cold gaze upon me. To try and mitigate the damage I would receive I began running around the arena and using Piercing Talon to maintain distance. Only getting close to reapply Fracture for the free damage. At around 3-4%, Titan marks me for the Granite Gaol. That is when I decide to stand my ground to maximize my DPS. Because either I die from Titan releasing a Mountain Buster into my face or the gaol encases me, killing me after a short time. I pop all my damage buffs except Blood for Blood (Now Lance Charge, but it increased damage received by 25%, and onlybgave a 5% damage increase at that level) and began my normal rotation. With Titan having a sliver of HP left, I lose control of my character. The countdown for the gaol ended. The screen faded to black quickly like any other situation where the last party member gets encased, normally indicating a wipe. But instead the cutscene for defeating Titan plays after the fade out. The DoTs I applied shortly before getting encased had finished Titan's remaining HP. The rest of the party was freaking out from me clenching victory from the jaws of defeat. Meanwhile, I was completely dumbstruck. I don't know if any of those three are still playing. But regardless of if they are, I hope they are doing well and cannot thank them enough for leaving me with such a fond memory. It is a memory that is etched into my soul and shall never be forgotten.
