Band-Maid is So Much More than five cute maids. The performance you just watched was song 27 of a 33 song set list for their 2023 Tour Final celebrating their Tenth Anniversary together as Band-Maid. The concert was nearly *FOUR HOURS LONG.* Slipknot, Kiss, GWAR, The New York Dolls, Wes Borland (LimpBizkit), and other acts have used stage costumes and the Maid's outfits (which they call battle armor!) are not much different. Over the years the uniforms have evolved from what looked like commercially available maid cafe uniforms into professionally designed stage costumes that reflect each members personality and professional requirements. Akane's "Maid Costume" is a breathable decorative outer layer sewn atop athletic wear normal for running or cycling. I've seen them live twice and the costumes really work under stage lighting; they're gorgeous. Band-Maid does a ton of outdoor festivals, and because they are underappreciated, they get those early to mid afternoon slots under the blazing Summer sun. The color scheme of their costumes is 'Mostly Black' so they have lots of ventilation built in, but sometimes that isn't enough. Akane often performs with an electric fan behind her. On the 2022 US tour Kanami was fighting dehydration and heat stroke. At Lollapalooza in 2023, Saiki was burning up on stage and was sitting next to Akane's fan during the "HATE?" bass - guitar battle and she even slipped Akane's drink bottle to her as she played drums!

Buckle up and enjoy the journey. BTW...you're discovering Band-Maid like many of us, as Japanese is not the first language to many of the fans of this band. Like you did, take the vocals as a musical element of the song and just take it all in. Then you can go back and read the lyrics. Although, there are a few songs where CC's are important to non-Japanese speakers to get a deeper feel for the song being played live. Most of the time, the lyrics are uplifting and positive. But, if the Maids are upset, Saiki, the lead singer in particular, then watch out!😆 Next up, since you were a bit distracted by the lyrics. Continue to marvel at the talent of this band with an instrumental, "From Now On" OMV. Or, "Domination" OLMV is another song which is great to get a initial feel for the band. Maidiacs love all the members but probably the most under appreciated member, to the casual or new listener, is the Rhythm guitarist Miku. As you learn more about the band, though, her contributions and importance becomes more obvious. She’s a great Rhythm guitarist, and backing vocalist who also takes lead vocals at times. Her vocals add so much to their sound it can’t be underestimated. She’s also the primary lyricist (although not for this song). She’s also brings unmatched levels of energy to their live performances, and is a born entertainer who can hold the audience in the palm of her hand during intermissions, which she calls “Magic Spell Time”.

"Hate?" was performed 2 1/2 hours in a 3 3/4 hour concert. No wardrobe changes! These women are PROS!!!!! Keep reacting to Band-Maid's music and you WILL be appreciated by we Maidiacs from around the world. With over 130 songs (all really good, some GREAT) in their catalog, the group uses many rock genres in their music(sometimes more than one in a song). You had some great comments, subbed! For instance, good work noting that Akane is enjoying herself, you'll never see her go long without a smile. With regards to the endurance needed to wear these costumes... consider that this was song 22 out of 33 in what was an over 3.5 hour concert (I wouldn't recommend doing it immediately, but eventually do the live version of Endless Story, which was the closer for this concert, if you want to see the fatigue that they went through). In terms of Akane's outfit, she does wear shorts or a shorter skirt so as to keep her legs free to do what they have to do. As you said, they really hate somebody... this song was written about one of their friends' significant others who had cheated on her. That guy can never show his face outdoors again. You don't want to cross these maids! If you want to go back to some of their early days (they've been around nearly 12 years), you can check out the music video for the song that saved the band, Thrill. But the most amazing thing about this band is that, if you go to their KZbin channel and pick ANY song of theirs, and you'll find it great. Their consistency is astounding.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 12th year with the original line up. And they are the best live band I have ever witnessed! Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal).

Spot on in your assessment on this song in this particular case. Haveing watched dozens on top of dozens of Hate? reactions, most every reactor gets losts in the sauce of the guitar conversation taking place down center stage ( and for good reason). With nary a mention of the percussive magic weaving its way through the solo's adding and accentuating so much wlhile also holding it all together. Up to this point I've only seen 1 other reaction that focused on how wildly important what the drums are doing during this section of the song are to the overall Banger Stautus success of the song. Don't misunderstand, the Band-Maid community know, love and appreciate Akane immensely. Knowing what a vital piece of the Band-Maid sound she is. Its the (usually firtst time) reactors that take a few BM reactions to notice her immense talent, bright smile and positive energy flowing out from behind her kit. Maidiac's know that her music, her drumming is the sound of Joy. Its the expression of her inner energy via her instrument through sound! One other quick note, in a Maidiac's Heart there will Always be 5 Maid's on stage. But as of this particular Serving / ( Concert ) to the casual observers, there is and will be Only 1 Maid outfit visible onstage. I got into hard rock around 1981 (the year of “Fire of Unknown Origin,” “Moving Pictures,” and “Point of Entry,” among plenty of others), and then spent the next four decades unknowingly waiting for Band-Maid - a band where half the songs are great and the other half are masterpieces, with no filler material, no ups and downs in quality or intensity, just ups and slightly-less-ups. We aren't paid by the Ladies or anyone else. But we ARE very passionate about the Ladies and their music. As for the sub-title issue, I normally recommend turning them off for your first listen and just let the music flow over you. Then go back and watch it with the sub-titles on. No, we appreciate Akane the drummer. Band-Maid's sound is based around her, so she is VERY important to their music. to the point that many of us consider her to one the top 10 or 15 drummers currently.

In a 1999 interview with Rolling Stone, David Bowie heralded the band as “one of the most important female bands in American rock,” describing them as “buried without a trace.” He continued: “They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time, in about 1973. They were extraordinary: They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers, they were just colossal and wonderful, and nobody’s ever mentioned them. And a thing about the maid outfits, Under: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

I kinda sorta get the surf rock thing. If you are coming in cold, you could maybe hear Misirlou lurking back in Miku's rhythm part. Costumes have been part of live performance for thousands of years, it's not that hard. You just make them comfortable. Think about the musical Cats and what those performers were doing.

You are of course entitled to form your own opinion but I am not sure how you get rockabilly or surf out of this. It sure doesn't sound to me like any rockabilly or surf that I have ever heard. Some of the heavier Band-Maid song suggestions for you are Moratorium, No God, and Rinne. The songs Play, Why Why Why, Clang, and Matchless Gum are also fairly heavy. They also have some really good instrumentals such as Onset, From Now On, and Without Holding Back.
