My mum always made banana nut bread at Christmas, and what seemed a lorry load of cookies. She would take the tin that the oatmeal came in and decorate it with Christmas paper and fill it with Christmas cookies. The postman got one, and the milk man who delivered out bottles of milk. The third one was for the village rector (Church of England) who always called in on Christmas Eve and had a whiskey with my dad. I always knew he would appear at Christmas with his genteel manner, his silvery hair, and his polished shoes. These customs still prevail in the Cotswold region of England, and in a few places the daily milk is still delivered by horse and cart.

@micav9961 Yes it's a fascinating idea to be able to live in an old fashioned cottage or house. It does have its drawbacks however. Until the 1960s my cottage here in the Cotswolds in England was heated entirely by wood burning fireplaces. Whilst this may seem like a romantic idea, somebody has to go around and keep them all burning to avoid freezing. I use them all but I have central heating as well. Christmas in the Cotwolds has changed very little in three hundred years. In my village at Christmas you will see a single wax candle burning in the window of many village homes. Candles were the only source of light for centuries. So people had many candles as it gets dark at four o'clock at Christmas here where I am, I'm not sure about Idaho where she resides. There is a very pretty Church of England candlelight service here on Christmas Eve, which is always followed by a huge. party at the rectory, hosted by the Rev Mr Wilkes, our parish priest. So as I say to everyone who comes to my door, do something for someone else at Christmas, instead of for yourself. Christmas is the joy of giving! Americans in particular seem to be extraordinarily materialistic for some reason, I don't know why. There is always a five pound note in the hat on the porch some some needy person and when I notice it gone, I replace it straightaway. I never spoil myself at Christmas, but I do spoil my doggie, she is a goldendoodle, a cross between a Golden Retriever and a poodle. She gets specially cooked treats, toys and a special Christmas doggie dinner. In seventy-five years of living I have learned (the hard way) that pets and animals will give you far more love than human beings.
