I am so sorry for your loss , although I have never raised chickens , my grandma had a flock of "" girls "" as she called them ! I can still recall the bond she had with them and every summer we spent with her was magical ! We learned to care for the girls , feeding , watering , scooping poop and collecting their eggs . I still have and use her wire egg basket and special crock that was used to preserve eggs in waterglass over the winter when as grandma would say "" the girls needed a vacation "" so eggs were scarce ! Once in a while , one would disappear and she would tell us "" that darned fox must have got her "" and until later years we never realized that the wonderful chicken dinner and subsequent pot of soup came from the missing hen ! After all we were city kids and I think she felt the need to shield us somewhat ! The "" deed "" was done by my grandfather because grandma didn't have the heart ! As she would say "" it's part of farming , but farmers have hearts too ""! thanks for your lovely offerings , you always evoke a memory or two that makes me smile !!!

Oh my goodness - this made me giggle!! I love this story so much. We also raise Cornish-cross chickens for meat, so I completely understand how your grandma felt. I couldn't agree more.
