I almost fell out of my chair when I finally saw someone *correctly* apply a lanolin-based undercoating. First- Fluid Film undercoating and the aerosol can "penetrant" are *not* the same product. So many on KZbin show this incorrectly. Second- It must be thoroughly mixed, just as you did. Stirring is wrong. Third- it _should be_ applied HOT. It seeps & creeps better, goes farther, sticks better, and you end up using less because of the nature of the coverage. Since making this video- the makers of PB Blaster have come up with their own formulation, which many say is superior to FF in many ways. It's called PB Blaster Surface Shield. Thank you for the wonderful videos you produce.

I have the same fluid film on my car. I did it professionally. They put on a heavy coat. I would advice you to put on a thicker coat. Once finished drive on a dry dirtroad (if possible). @pete smyth Gramps taught me to use bar and chain oil. It's thick, it sticks, it's cheap and readily available. Drive on dusty road after. I have an 85 ford ranger that looks better than my neighbors 5 year old Tacoma. We're in the Northeast. Use a rag to cover places you don't want to spray it, like bushings, boots exhaust. Spray it on once a year for the first two years, then every third year. Best to do it in warm weather because it's so thick. An added bonus, if you've got chipmunk or mice that like to store acorns in your vehicle they hate it. You'll never see a nest again.

Mustie1 has a couple of pretty good videos about undercoating. He uses bar & chain oil, which is an alternative. When I restore old cars, I get rid of surface rust using phosphoric acid (Jasco at big box stores) then neutralize it. Works really well and keeps it at bay under any temporary or permanent coatings. Luckily, I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast, so I no longer have to deal with salt on the roads, but man is that stuff an epidemic.... From what I see out here, it's not really necessary, we seem to do just fine without it, even in the Sierras, which got ~30ft of snow last year.

It easy for me to tell I'm back in NY when I start seeing the telltale rusty cars and trucks driving by me on the thruway. NY must use xtra strength salt on their roads or apply it 10 months outta 12...lol
@davec.31984 жыл бұрын
In some places they use an average of 50,000lbs per mile, per year.

I can always tell when I cross over into Vt. as they don't seems to use that much salt, there roads generally suck. I ski there every weekend Nov to May.

In my town in NH(40,000 ppl) it costs 4,000$ worth of salt an hour to salt the streets

What I love is that it's work equipment/vehicles and he treats them as such. Some practical maintenance and don't worry about little scuffs too much. I wonder though. Shouldn't you get rid of the rust first, before covering it up again? I've always been taught that you might as well not cover it if there's still some on there, that it actually worsens it, cause it's "trapped". Unless the stuff you used takes care of oxidation?

I fluid film all of my vehicles. It is one of the best rust preventatives I have found.

Really enjoyed this video, Andrew, and you remind me of me: you take on a lot of questionable safety risk, but you always protect your hearing. Me too! On both counts.

Tesla CYBRTRK is all stainless steel. Might just be the answer to rust for those living in salty areas. Stainless steel outside, great hauling capacity, 4 wheel drive, high ground clearance with air ride to raise and lower the vehicle, million mile motors and batteries. A truck that lasts forever and can take a beating. Should have no trouble hauling a heavy trailer full of equipment or plowing snow. Put solar panels on the shop and drive with power from the sun.

One suggestion for Fluid Film.... The 360 spray tube inside frame holes and crevices, but use a rag dipped in the fluid film and wipe on the frame etc. That way it goes on even and you can keep it away from the brakes, exhaust and other areas you don't want it. NO waste and doesn't get all over you and shop floor. I am using on my Toyota truck due to frames rusting.
