i feel like theres a difference between having a couple different ereaders and having a collection of ereaders with so many different colors. what factors besides overconsumption will cause ppl to buy over a dozen ereaders. buying a lot of books is far better than buying a dozen ereaders too bc of the resources it takes to make the technology. like ppl who use shein isnt the issue its people who spend several hundred or thousands of dollars on shein for fast fashion clothes when they clearly have the money to buy better quality more sustainable clothes, nuance is important and theres extremes to every trend

very true like ereaders are SO much more expensive than books and then on top of that you have to buy books on your ereader too

@@myocoree i feel like you don't really understand the concept of underconsumption because what @carrot_corn is trying to say isnt about how much e readers or books cost. it's not about money. its about not buying stuff you don't need which is exactly what e readers are all about. you buy one, use it for years so you dont have to buy a lot of books which saves trees and energy. collecting e readers is definetly over consumption (im not a native english speaker so i hope this made sense)

@@kedosama You spoke perfectly. I would elaborate bc I like to yap but she definitely missed the core value of underconsumption vs. overconsumption which is the ethics of consumption. This is just a weird "trendy" extension of conscious consumption which is all about how your dollar incentivizes people and businesses to act a certain way. So if you're supporting companies and organizations riding on trends that rely on exploitative labor/slavery, harm the environment, amongst other things for the sake of a temporary fixation and social points, that uniquely implicates you and is especially selfish because it's not even necessary or useful... it's purely superficial and does so much more damage than a person of normal/genuine long-term interest. So there's literally no upside to it. Books tend to get donated after being used (or not used) so it is not that big of a deal but things like clothes, makeup, hygiene products, and technology especially are something people should be buying less of let alone overconsuming considering what it takes from people and the world to produce them and/or discard them. How these decisions hurt your wallet is the last concern. I do think a lot of people who are participating in underconsumption as a trend are disingenuous and are also only doing it for cool internet points but I don't see that much harm in it other than people getting annoying about it-- but that's the internet. I feel like the de-influencing trend and underconsumption trend get conflated a lot by the people participating which is fair bc they overlap by a lot of these sentiments, especially around finances, apply more to de-influencing than underconsumption.

@@myocoreeI mean not really, it depends on the hobby. In this day and age, a lot of hobbies can be done practically for free thanks to KZbin, like drawing, coding, origami, crafting in general, crochet, making music, 3d modelling, running, at home exercise. Reading and watching pretty much anything is extremely accessible due to piracy and ebooks. Hobbies are pretty much as expansive as you want them to be. And, besides, if you have the money for 12 e-readers and what’s basically a stock of Starbucks at this point, you probably have money for at least one hobby
@myocoree

@ i have a bunch of hobbies and a lot of them can be “practically” for free but not really. i did origami in 5th grade and i could use copy paper but eventually you will run out all the time which means you need to buy more. i crochet and although i reuse my yarn you will run out especially if you are doing big projects like blankets but i usually work through a lot of my yarn on small things. crocheting is one of the only hobbies where you’re probably constantly buying projects. i also draw and yes it takes about a year or two to fill up a sketchbook but also you never know lol i run though my sketchbooks pretty fast also the materials when you’re just starting out and buying things for any hobby will add up. not to mention in all of these communities there is still capitalism, even in the crochet community people are convinced they need to buy buy buy and yes you can avoid it but a lot of people just give in to capitalism easily (me)

Overconsumption *does* happen in the book community, it's just not normalized at nearly the rate that it is in other communities, like the cup-collecting communities. There is this girl I know in real life who buys hundreds of dollars worth of books every single week, and she does not read them. She doesn't like reading, she just likes the way her home looks filled with books she cannot afford, and she's constantly asking me for money to help her get groceries because she's spending all of her money on aestheticizing her home. I've tried so many times to make her understand that buying so many books despite never reading them isn't normal or healthy behavior, but she claims I'm just jealous because I don't purchase books at the rate she does. I've tried to encourage her to read her stash, and she retorts with how reading is "boring" and she just wants to look like someone who reads. She makes me wonder how many people on the clock app are posting their filled-to-bursting bookshelves and not actually reading the books within them.

i keep seeing giant hauls and un-hauls on english speaking (mostly American and British) channels. if you weren't going to read the 100 books you just unhauled, why did you buy them? Book channels are normalizing this but in real life it is such a weird behaviour. in Turkey, where I'm from, book channels dont really do unhauls because books are quite expensive here, so you buy books with more caution. Which does not lead to over-buying. I feel like we just need to be mindful of the purchases we make

I think the problem with the e-readers is not just the overconsumption itself but all of the exploitation and abuse that has to happen for us to have access to this ridiculous amount of technology, just so that we can buy 3 of the same device that we DO NOT NEED. and that applies for any electronic device, for me, it's worse because we're talking human lives being lost just for us to have a new device every year for no reason💀 and people still support that and see nothing wrong with it. I think with that industry we have to be more mindful, because when we buy we are supporting the exploitation of people whether we realize it or not. (sorry if my english is weird is not my first language🙏🏼)

I agree. Like how can you be tapped into what’s happening in the Congo and not feel like ppl are overconsuming electronics. And especially when the US consumes smth like 40% of the world’s resources. Our constant overconsumption is smth to be criticized not bc it’s a moral failing but bc it has impacts on ppl in the global south.

I do be judging folks. Mostly the shein and hygiene warriors. And matcha overconsumption cause they are causing a shortage and the tea farmers can't just easily produce more With e-readers, I judge the ones that gotta have every color of the same ereader. But generally I do prefer to follow people who are mindful like even if you do buy a bunch of books once but you making a bigger effort to read on your bookshelves, fine with me

2:30 there is at least one big reason for an e-reader, and that's space savings. I drive a semi-truck for a living and the only feasible way I can read often is through an e-reader. I have room for about 3 books in here, and I'm so, so, so thankful for the e-readers and audio books.

I feel like over/underconsumption is more complicated than buying or not buying things. It’s very much using the things you buy. Like I have two laptops, but I use them for different purposes- one for games and drawing, the other one I take places like coffee shops to sit and browse or write on. I use both. I don’t like collect laptops or anything. I also buy a lot of books, but honestly I’m a decently avid reader (not like 300 per year avid though; my 2024 New Year’s resolution was to get back into reading by setting a modest goal of 12 in the year and I’m now on book 40, and on top of that I read a lot of nonfiction- like a third of what I’ve read this year is nonfiction) and have been actually reading them. I wish I clicked with ereaders more though but I have issues reading on a screen because of the specific brand of bad my eyes are and I just read better on a physical book. I might give them another shot one day though, my physical TBR that I own is in the 60s right now 💀. Anyway though to summarize I think conscious consumption is not as simple as buying a lot or not. It’s about being conscious and using what you buy.

I think I'm realizing that I don't enjoy owning a bunch of stuff, I just enjoy shopping for it. I get kinda stressed about how to store/organize new books and I feel guility about the amount of books I haven't read. For me, I think the solution is the libby app. It kind of feels like shopping because I can sort books I'm interested into different tags and place them on hold. It feels like I'm loading my cart up with books and making wishlists without actually buying anything. I really want to emphasize reading my owned books next year. My long term goal is to only buy books I've already loved and read.

I still have my glasses from when I was 10, I could technically go and get the lens changed to my current prescription if I wanted bc I still fit into them. My current frames are ones I got when I was 12 from the kids section at spec savers. It’s depends on ur head size & also ur nose bridge width. She might’ve been lying though but it’s not impossible for someone to fit into kids frames.

I felt this video so hard!! I am by nature a literature lover and an art lover and a little gimmick collector because what some people consider to be mere little gimmicks, to me ARE art and literature!! And I find them to be enriching!! As an online community, it seems readers/book collectors (since we're talking about consumption) tend to be pretty mindful with their purchases and space anyway, and we are certainly more self-critical than other consumer-hobby communities I'm in. I, personally, am very much in a place right now where I own too many books for the small space I have, and it's a bit stressful, so I've been trying to buy much less. When I go to book stores, it's once every couple of months, and I walk out with one or two things. The only exception is, like, a library sale where I could fill a big grocery bag for only five bucks. But I've also been reading and discarding the books I don't want to keep, and trying to weigh what I think, in my opinion, even is "worth" keeping, since that's such an arbitrary line to draw, really? Like, every book I've ever spent money on was something I had the intention of reading at the time of purchase, maybe not immediately but someday. Books don't have an expiration date, but tastes do change, and I see books I bought when I was 20, that at 25, don't feel like they reflect my current interests as much as they did then... but then what? If they're unread, do I just never read them? Do I take the time to read them when I've got other books I want to read more immediately? If we're wasting anything in the book community, it's our time, just as much as our money. And some of our time that we spend having this "overconsumption" debate could be better spent minding our own business, and seeking to understand the different ways people express themselves and find joy in curating a space of possessions which are meaningful to them. Books are some of the most obviously-meaningful objects you can have, especially if they're books that you love. Consumerism doesn't HAVE to be part of someone's identity as a reader; I love the library and I've actually made it a goal to use mine a lot more. Someone is just as valid a reader if they own zero books and buy nothing ever. But I'd never want to not own any books. It would not feel like my living space without my books. And I think most readers naturally feel that way; we don't have any sort of disgust towards the physical object that reflects our interests. There are downsides to owning too many books, certainly. But book ownership can be a deeply satisfying and personal thing. (PS - I left another very long comment about my editions of Shakespeare and the concept of heirlooms, which I wrote after this comment, but I realized they were like two separate novels 😭😭 and I wanted to not leave you a gigantic wall of text. Sorry for being long-winded I guess I just really loved your video and I found it very much resonated with so many of the thoughts *I* have about reading and book communities, that feel underrepresented by these to-consume-or-not-to-consume debates)

Girl I love this video so much... so so much. I have so much to say especially about different editions of the same book, because something I felt wrong about, but have gotten over this year, in regards to my book collection, is that in January, I was looking at getting a new edition of Shakespeare's works. I own the Riverside Shakespeare, which is a complete works from 1973, and I've owned it since I was 19. I got it for free because it was in my grandmother's house for the longest time, because it was once a required book for a Shakespeare class my aunt took in college (some of her exam books were still tucked in the pages!), and my grandmother just wanted me to have it because I was the only one who ever touched it in 40 years. My family does not share my love of literature, LOL, but if she didn't have that object, and pass it on to me, my life would be completely different. For an object that I received for exactly zero dollars, it's probably one of the most priceless things I own. I have a deeply personal relationship with it; it's where I first read Hamlet, and the Tempest, and Julius Caesar, and the majority of the other plays (I've now read all of them) for the first time. But it's also a family heirloom, and that to me makes it all the more precious, because it has a past that is older than me, and I want it to have a future beyond my lifetime, too. But yeah, my Riverside is also in rough shape because when I was younger I didn't know how to take care of large, old books like that, and I didn't do my best to preserve it, and I'm genuinely worried about the cover and spine breaking and peeling. I had become increasingly delicate with it, which certainly hindered my reading. I eventually got a book of 23 plays and the sonnets on eBay that was from the 1950s; I wanted something that was smaller and not such a burden to read in bed; the condition was quite decent too. And yet somehow I felt such... guilt??? Girl I can't tell you why. I suppose it's because I "already owned the plays" but like you say, EACH BOOK IS DIFFERENT!! Different editions have different notes, introductions, supplementary materials... like I KNEW the value of owning another edition, I just somehow felt wasteful about doing it. Eyeroll @ myself honestly. The guilt. 🙄 But then later on in May I was actually kinda goin through some stuff that fuckin sucked, and I was reading more Shakespeare to cope with it, and I ended up treating myself by getting another Complete Works (The RSC edition from 2022... I got it like half off on Amazon too so a great price), a little more confident with my purchase, because actually, from owning the 23 plays edition, I understood the value of what I was buying. I *like* having a Shakespeare collection. It's not too extensive; the space it takes up and the money it has cost me is not burdensome at all in comparison to the joy it brings me. I can justify it to myself completely. And and and!!! As I myself have recently become an aunt to two nieces (one older brother has a one-year-old daughter, and the other has one on the way)... I am very excited about my family growing, and being able to pass these things on to whoever wants it in the next generation. What I buy, I plan to own and keep for awhile, but it makes me so happy whenever instead of dumping a pile of books in a donate bin, I give something I really liked to a friend who is interested in it. And especially for my nieces and nephews and future children, I want to share what's mine with them-they can have these pieces of me, not just my words and my intangible love. I certainly don't mind having done my part to increase the literary heirlooms. Because someday my younger family members can say "This was Auntie Susan's, and then it was Auntie Diana's, and now it's mine..." or "This was my grandmother's second copy; it's been in the family for fifty years..." Like, is that JUST consumerism? My book collection is meant to endure; I do not eat them up and promptly shit them out. What I am "consuming" nourishes my soul beyond a monetary value.

I have a massive ebook library bc they’re cheaper to get (I wait for when they’re on sale for like $2-3) and I don’t have the space for very many physical books, but now that I’ve actually lived in one spot for a few years I’ve slowly started collecting special editions. I also have that first B&N Peter Pan, their special edition classics are so good! Plus I kind of think that if you’re gonna get a classic getting a nice one is the way to go, otherwise you can just get most of them for free from Gutenberg. And of course, there’s always the library if you have access to one. I don’t really get people who do like, book boxes EVERY month, because I don’t really want special editions of books I don’t like?? And you can’t know if you like brand new releases? Just seems kinda wasteful of resources (including money and space), but I say this as a poor person lmao. On limited edition body wash: I use Native and they have limited edition scents, but most of them are seasonal, so like right now there’s like mistletoe and candy cane, which were also available this time last year. They also sometimes make limited scents permanent if the demand is high enough, I believe. But that’s just that brand, I don’t know what else the girlies might be using. (Btw, when you said “if I want it I have to have it,” I felt that. The untreated ADHD is strong with this one.)

idk if i said it in the video but i actually don’t buy books because i read mainly from the library but also people buy books because they can and they want to. obviously it’s a need but some people do have the privilege to just buy what they want. personally i have the privilege to.

Ok, maximalist hyper-consumer here. I have an extensive book collection, BKR bottle collection, body wash, makeup, and probably other things that I'm not realizing. What happens is that I'm a mood reader, i only have q ereader and i love her so much dont need a second, but i do own 4-5 copies of each books i love, i have the space and the means, im happy. The water bottles, well they are each different colors and they match my outfit at the gym or outside. It makes me happy and help me drink more water😅 For the body wash... yeah some are limited and if i like it i buy one backup, usually. After 2 bottles of body wash. You're ready to move on to another smell. Especially if they are seasonal. Perfume? Same as body wash, i got some for gym that reacts well with sweat, some for night and some for day, and seasonal. To me it feel necessary 😅 Makeup, well i was a makeup enthousiast and still wear some. I like to have variety 😅 Now. Yes im overwhelmed and there is quite a clutter in my room. Its a slow process to try to use what i have and be happy/satisfied with it. Social media doesnt help me at all. I love watching videos like this one ❤😊
