I’ve only spoken to Wardens twice while dove hunting a once while fishing and had one stop by our deer lease once and I fish at least a couple weekends per month. I’m kind of glad they are not out harassing everyone but I’ve also seen jackasses shooting every bird that fly’s by and keeping baby Hybrids thinking they’re where bass. A little more harassment maybe needed here. What I don’t like to see is federal wardens on state property. Those jackasses should only be working in DC or in federal parks.

I have been checked by three game wardens since 1991 and one of them was joking because he was the guy who sold me my license so he knew I had one. When I was in Alaska most people did not need sport fishing licenses because a commercial license kinda trumped that with no limit for anything. Most of the salmon or salmon eggs I had were processed at least in part by me. We couldn't accept the seal bit salmon but we always had smokers going and handed out a bag of smoked salmon to anybody and made sure all the guys who came out with a guide left with a sack of it. Usually the people who used a guide had an overnight in our spare cabin for free and we had all kinds of food so they actually ate breakfast and supper with us. We had some Japanese guys who packed the eggs from the salmon which was way more money. All the eggs went to Japan and the meat went all over the place. The salmon that the guys out in the ocean caught that was basically saltwater fish got shipped to France. We had nothing to do with those guys.

Went to the wrong place on the Matanuska River. The Kenai was a great place to fish if you have a boat. I used to laugh at Eagle River every time I thought of the Movie Hot Shots. In Seward you were allowed to snag salmon in the ocean. That was a riot. Hooked one on the dorsal fin and what a fight. Then it occured to me no one wanted the salmon I snagged because it was to small only 29 pounds. Everyone was trying to snag the 40 pound plus salmon. I saw an eagle carry away a tiny poodle.

Alaska fish and wildlife troopers are what we have because we really do not call them gamewardens here in Alaska. A dead giveaway for plain-clothed ones is that they will have fishing gear too light for the type of salmon fishing going on, of which I saw some with light trout fishing rods. Some will act like they are fishing while watching someone that caught their attention, and you will see them slap the water sometimes, but they appear to not really be fishing. But I have never seen one flash a badge that was not around their neck because of the possibility of the badge falling into the water. They need to be out more to catch these ones breaking the rules because they know that they are not out in force or know that they will more than likely not get into trouble because of the fact that the troopers are not out on the water much. I see many people poaching and trying to say that they are proxy fishing while they have like four limits or more, and you really can only fish one proxy on top of your own limit.

I have watched the wardens sit with binoculars watching people and checking people and you never would even know they were there until it is too late. To clarify for non-Alaskans…. Most Alaskans love seeing F&G out there checking licenses and stringers. Sadly, a lot of Alaskans are pieces of garbage when it comes to following simple fishing regulations. It’s very common to find people without a license, people who exceed limits, using illegal gear,… Not because they forgot or didn’t know the regulations, but because they simply don’t care. Every year when we camp at the Russian during the run, we watch people from other camp sites go get their limit, bring them back to camp, toss them in a cooler and then go back for another 6. And I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve watched land a fish hooked illegally (not in the mouth is illegal) and keeping it. They know people are watching and they simply don’t care.

Notice how he keeps getting a fish on at the end of the drift where one would normally simply lift their line out of the water to cast again. He is foul hooking fish. AKA snagging fish. Oh the next time someone flashes a badge ask them for their credentials. Anyone can buy a badge online. The credentials is what matters. If he is who he states to be the credentials will be on the flip side of that wallet or backing holding the badge.

The entire point of just looking like a regular person is just to observe you doing something wrong while your guard is down. I see people hooking fish all the time illegally and keeping them. Technically, the vast majority of the people on the Kenai are snagging them illegally with the big swoops they take at the end of the drift, instead of flossing correctly, which almost guarantees a perfect hook set.

why does everyone always treat trout with such white gloves?? Are they really that fragile? Endangered? You fight them for 10 minutes and they are jumping all over the place but then you finally net them and then the race is on to release them so quickly and barely take them out of the water. Is this all just folklore? I get treating these fish with respect...but I don't ever see this same treatment with walleye, perch, bass, etc etc etc.

Trout are very fragile so you have to take care of them!

Super clickbaity title. You had a 30 second interaction with a game warden. Neither of you were doing anything wrong, and the whole encounter was completely uneventful.
