It's always been alive and well. They just can't tell people such things directly like this skit. They tell you you're "overqualified", if they bother to give you an excuse at all. Usually they just don't call you back, or tell you they went another direction. To admit this outright opens them to a discrimination lawsuit. But they couldn't send the moral life lesson the video intends without being blunt about it.

It’s actually true that some places are more likely to hire a younger inexperienced person over an older experienced person. I watched a tv program (I think it was 20/20) years ago where they secretly taped interviews and younger people were hired over older ones. There is age discrimination at many places.

So true! I work in HR for fortune 100 Company & have more experience than anyone in my office. Yet they’d rather hire from outside the company or make a lateral promotion for someone with no actual HR experience. They launched a Customer Satisfaction Survey which is being increasingly used as a performance tool. It is wrought with validity issues & application errors, yet despite feedback, they march forward without a care. The data is skewed due to employees manipulating their work to obtain positive feedbacks.

As a 71 year old woman, I don't look at it as my worth is diminishing. You have to accept the fact that growing older ,there are some places in different jobs that you just aren't a fit for. The word worth means something different at 25. Than it does when you are my age. I feel I have a lot of worth with my family , I am very active , and wiser now then ever before. You also have different interests and goals. I am taken more seriously. I'm really just happy I am getting the chance to grow older .

Just a side note, having a youthful demographic as clients is a strategy created by the CEO. A job interview is not really the time or place to change company demographics and strategy - the hiring manager can only express the information he's provided by the CEO and that't it. That said, it doesn't mean that this woman, either as position of a CEO or sales person in the stores is unable to understand fashion and understand the trends that young people like. Most companies like their sales people to wear the clothes from the brand and to have an interesting style, thats not a age factor at all. It's just that these plots for these videos are either always the same or incredibly illogical. I guess most viewers don't care and I watch these too as lighthearted entertainment. Just wanted to share.

This scenario showed a very common thread of retail and other areas of employment. This script and actors brought to the forefront this manager's obstinate, racist and arrogant nature. Clearly, he does not care about any legal ramifications because he fully believes he is immune from criticism due to the day-time power he wields. Though this horrific behavior may not have directly happened to you, please do not believe it has not happened to a multitude of job applicants or shoppers. Also, during my 50+ years of employment, the key corporate chains of command were common knowledge among staff.

I can see both sides of this. On his side i do understand that fashion is very age oriented, and you do need a younger attractive person on the scene. That's because ,a younger person can relate to the customer better. Thats the way it is. Even a runway model's days are numbered. Is it fair, probably not. You can still look stylish and attractive at any age. But youth does run the Country, and they are the ones spending the money on these products. On her side experience does matter. She would know how to keep the business afloat money wise. There is a place for different ages in any company. You have to accept ,where you fit in. At 25, you don't fit in the same way at 45. That's life. Its business, not discrimination.
