In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Neil Woods.
By his own admission, Neil lived a sheltered life in his youth, and soon became aware of this in his early stages of police training. A rare opportunity in the form of an attachment to the drugs squad, led Neil into the covert world of undercover work. Quickly becoming an expert in his field, Neil excelled in his career, before feeling the negative effects of the work on his mental health.
Now a distinguished author, and keen campaigner for the decriminalisation of narcotics, and the use of them in medical situations for rehabilitation, Neil is involved with multiple foundations working to reduce the number of service personnel suffering with PTSD and other mental health issues.

I am a homeless former paramedic. It's refreshing to hear someone, at last, talking about PTSD among our profession. There is nothing out there for people like me apart from the non-existent NHS services. Although I remain homeless, I am now in a much better place in my head. On reflection I recognise that many of my my former colleagues, even though it wasn't openly discussed, had issues. It is a massive issue that largely goes unaddressed. Throughout my career I heard about numerous paramedics taking their own lives and even lost a friend and colleague who did exactly that. Thank you.

It's really interesting hearing you talk about the sensation of time slowing down in high stress situations which realistically only last a few seconds. I've had this many times over my life and never really heard anyone else mention it

If illegal drugs were to be legalised, what would the organised criminal element then do to fill this cash void? Do you think that psychedelic drug therapy could be upscaled to treat a large numbers of people? Genuine questions. I’ve really enjoyed your podcasts, you’re a great host.

Excellent debrief . Neil said though that all drugs should be legalized to remove the criminal control of that world and put the control in the medical world's hands , which I agree with , However it was only this week when I watched a youtube video about an American city , Portland I believe it was , which had decided to legalize drugs and the result was not what general law abiding people , nor the police and the politicians who had allowed the legalization , had hoped to achieve . Users now are publically taking drugs in the streets and the police cannot do anything about it . The video interviewed 'normal' people who said it was now not worth reporting crimes , committed with links to drugs , to the police , or to ask the police for help when citizens needed it . Neil was right I think but it seems Portland did not put systems into place for everyone's benefit and caused a worse , much worse , situation .

Portland decriminalised drug use/possession. If caught you have the option to do a 48 hour rehab program. Theve set nothing up to properly help users or take the market away from dealers. It looks like its designed to fail so they can say it doesn't work.

Drig corruption is in the courts too. The police go to the courts etc for search warrant etc. This is kicked back by employees.

Excellent chat as always Phil, interesting to myself in particular as I have a similar background but with the running of informants in organised crime and police corruption . Many of the corrupt officers are not official identified mainly as the police don’t want to admit they have an issue, they tend to find other misdemeanour conduct to get rid. Police officers being paid to join by organised crime groups is a regular issue, some cunning tactics used to catch them . Keep up the good work.
