Dad's a real piece of work, and raising two spoiled brats. My kid would have been told that crying and throwing is fit is not how to get something you want, and we would have left the store empty handed. Next time, speak to the parent in $$. It's a lot cheaper to make your own, appropriate cage. It's a lot cheaper to get a pig from a rescue, and most animals in a pet store are sick with respiratory infections, and will require expensive vet treatment.

I worked at one of these places regrettably. The best thing I would do was info dump about what an animal needed and 9/10 the people would glaze over and leave. But that 1/10 times, people would say "oh wow really, okay let me do more research" and they would come back, show off everything they had prepped in picture from their phone, super proud of themselves, and buy the animals from the store. They'd come back habitually for all their supplies and more. Maybe I wasn't a good business person for doing this, but I was good for the animals and that's all that matters.

If petshops were serious about healthy and cared for animals, they would work alongside rescues, shelters and vets. Thankyou for showing this horrible reality, it is disturbing that these animals are literally just products.... How is this legal?? Rescuers, like scottysanimals and you, always bring pet realities to light.

that 'rat' cage is insane, that's not suitable for any small animals honestly it's horrible. i hate pet store cages, they never have the correct measurements and they obviously don't care about it because if they did care then they would sell the correct size cages and enclosures rather than selling the horrible cheap plastic stuff that is far too small

OMG why would you take kids into a pet store KNOWING they’re going to cry about getting them… if you cant afford it, why are you doing it? The kids are going to lose interest in the next 12 hours. This video was so cringe. Thank you for spreading knowledge and love towards these babies.

Reptile person here. That chameleon did not look very good. Way too small an enclosure even temporarily obviously. But while it was a short glimpse, the way it was holding itself looked like possibly metabolic bone disease caused by not getting the proper lighting and supplements. That can get really bad over time and it’s one of the worst problems with pet store “informed” impulse buyers of lizards. We’ve got a place like this in my town too. A few things I have to buy there but going in always makes me sad.
@tw33233Сағат бұрын
Omg pretty sure I know that place! It's pretty awful. Randomly stopped in a while back and saw that in with the feeders rats there was this elderly, sick/injured looking rat who clearly looked like a former pet. Asked one of the employees and sure enough his owner had surrendered him to the store and they put him in with the feeders, where he was getting attacked and had developed a URI 😢 Felt terrible and got him medical attention. Named him Roger and he was absolutely mean as shit lol, but understandable considering what he'd been through. At least he had a few months of peace at the end of a hard life 🥲

I've had that debate with many before about how purchasing from a pet store isn't really rescuing an animal, it's supporting the animal mills because to the store it's just another item on the shelf at the end of that day, as sad as it is. I think it's a controversial subject for sure. I'm glad you were there to at least intervene and help them get a more appropriate cage ( not big enough as you mentioned - but better than what he would have walked out with)

Maybe showing a few pictures of C&C cages and playpens would have been helpful. I would have been eternally grateful if someone would have showed me when I first became a guinea pig and bunny parent. Luckily, I learned very quickly by watching responsible pet owners like yourself on proper care. Now I keep handy pictures of suitable enclosures to show people I encounter that may be making an impulse buy. They seem grateful for the advice, and it saves them money in the long run. It is still hard to watch because many don't know the long-term care and proper food these precious pets require. Loving pet owners are continually learning the proper way. It never ends. You did the right thing by speaking up.

It’s really frustrating watching the dad just give into the demands of his kids because they started crying; garbage parenting which is setting himself, his kids, and those pigs up for failure. If he isn’t prepared to take care of exotic animals, it’s irresponsible of him as the adult to assume his KIDS are prepared for that. Lazy parenting at its finest. Thank you for trying.

1:30 YES!! 👏👏 Say it louder. People need to stop behaving like purchasing an animal from a pet store is an act of goodwill or a "rescue". All it does is tell them their "product" sold and they need to replace it again and again. The cycle can end if there is no consumer demand.

i feel like its should be vital for people to know about animals. maybe not like knowing everything but like "so, hey! this is a living being, you cannot treat them like a toy. they feel fear, anger, happines, etc, just like you." In my side though, as a teenager myself, I feel like kids from this generation care a lot more about animals than like adults. But yeah it's totally true that if there's little kids barely now in that shop wanting a guinea pig and have to make the decision right there, they're not informed.

I watched a video where two men were dumpster diving outside a pet store and found/ rescued still living fish that had just been thrown away to slowly die,, they were knowledgable on fish (its a fish care/rescue channel) and were able to save most of them in time. but if that's the attitude of pet stores in general I'm not surprised this happens either :( I won't buy from pet stores that sell animals anymore, all my fur babies of any type come from rescue now.

Here in france, it’s illegal and reprimanded for pet stores to sell kittens or puppies since a while now because “it’s shocking to see them behind glass walls without their mama”, but it’s fully legal to sell reptiles, rabbits, chickens, small rodents, birds or fishes, the double standard is crazy. And the low prices make it even worse… it just encourages impulse buying. I’m glad my parents never gave in when I was a kid 🫠 Gladly, there are pet stores like Maxizoo which don’t sell animals. That’s where I go when I need something for my dog, because they don’t sell animals but also don’t sell abuse objects like shock collar, prong collars etc 🙌

@neelymurphy67976 сағат бұрын
Kids are only interested in guinea pigs because they're cute and cuddly looking. Those reasons are not the right reasons for anyone to get them. Nuanced interesting and subtle behaviors of the pigs over long term are the reasons a person will enjoy them, and most kids don't have that level of patience or understanding, so they will end up seeing a stinky animal that is actually more gross the more they learn about it and probably more work and money to keep them even what's considered acceptably clean, but honestly unless you're doing constant spot cleaning or bathing them before touching them, it's still nasty because they're animals that live in their waste and there's just not much to get around it. There will always be visible waste laying there in the cage that they walk and sit in. When the kids and parents see that reality, they will be dumped at a shelter or worse or passed on to others that will eventually perpetuate the cycle. Guinea pigs are only for adults and maybe some older kids that are interested in them for the right reasons and willing to withstand the type of maintenance.

In the UK, there are laws on how live mammals must be kept on display. They need a proper roof (unlike in this store), a certain standard of food, water and enrichment as well as one staff member trained with veterinary skills. I'm glad you at least helped him understand that getting a bigger cage is better for them. I HOPE that dad was just tired that day, because I know how exhausting going out with my one kid is, having TWO begging if we went somewhere would be a lot more to deal with. I hope dad is willing to take care of and assume responsibility for these animals, and look up things about them when he gets them home... But I have my doubts. Also something about this video made me at least happy that I, as a person who doesn't know much about small animals and rodents as pets (I focus more on dogs, cats, birds, etc--) I would at least make you happy if you were to see me and my daughter in a store with her begging "MOM PLEEEEASE CAN WE HAVE A BUNNY???" because my response would be "We are not going to leave the store with a rabbit because neither of us know how to properly take care of one. But what we CAN do is look around at the rabbits, watch them and see how they interact with each other and people being around them, and then when we go home we can start looking up information about different kinds of rabbits and what they need to be happy and healthy if we were to bring them home and see if that's something we can do. How about that? That way, if we decide it is something we can afford to do money, time, and energy wise, we will know more about how to best take care of them and if we can provide the kind of space and lifestyle that they would need to be happy."

I think there should be a lot more community rescues with supplies you can buy there and free or low cost health checks. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to adopt elderly piggies that are special needs and a lot of rescues are over run with those, they need to be put into foster homes or guinea pig sanctuary or put down. The younger healthy piggies that are higher candidate for adoption should be on the floor ready to meet people and there should be piggy speed dating for when a piggies lost a litter mate as that's the best shot for adoption for a pig over 3 years old.

You’re doing a disservice to not only the animals, your kids, but also yourself have some self respect and tell the kids NO because you’re the adult not them if we let kids run the world the world would be destroyed. There is a limited amount anyone can say in a public pet store, without seeming like harassment etc…but what you said worked. He heard you. Sure we all want better for the piggies here. Yes they will likely end up in a rescue..I have seven here right now the local shelter asked me to help with. No doubt the were impulse pet store buys…I might have said I have a you tube and make fun content about piggies and you and your daughter might like to check it out..when I adopt out piggies I always give Saskias page as where people can go for the correct information on piggy care. I should give your page too….anyway…for that moment he heard you….so it was a small win…

Personally I don’t like this kind of content from you because it’s a losing game the parents don’t care and this happened hundreds of times a day so ultimately it isn’t really helping the problem but maybe something on information sharing or working some support of free pamphlet or book that can help with care? Or even political stuff like working on posting reform of these pet stores

ngl it made me very uncomfortable that you followed the people throughout the store, filmed them without their knowledge or permission, and posted film of them online without their knowledge or permission. it would be uncomfortable if you were doing this to grown people, but it's very uncomfortable because you were doing this to a grown person with his two young kids. this is a very uncomfortable video and i would not like to watch more videos like this, please.

The point was to expose the reality of how bad pet stores could be. I never planned on running into individuals who were impulse buying guinea pigs, but thought this would be a vital portion to show. The point of a “hidden camera” is for it to be hidden.

@@ThePigRoom imo, you should have filmed the pet store. you shouldn't have followed, filmed, and posted the people in it without their knowledge or permission. imo, it is a gross violation of privacy. it would have been better, imo, to film yourself speaking about your interaction with the people in the store. not only would have it been better for the people, whose privacy wouldn't have been violated, but i think it would have been better for you. they could have called the police on you.
