Yeah, I ran into a lot of problems myself, namely that I was unable to find the shroud removal screws given that the whole machine just isn't here. I tried to get a head start by removing the blades from the helical cutter head, but that also isn't here.

I gotter Dunn! Your video guided me through the entire process. Fantastic! The two hurdles were pounding that large bearing back in. I didn’t have a socket with a large enough diameter to contact the outer race, so I turned my own hollow punch out of oak on my lathe. It needed to be 1.7” on the outer, with a 7/8” hole down the center. It did the trick! Next was getting the belt back on the pulley. I used a plastic coated pliers handle as a pry against the nut holding the pulley. It took several minutes but I won! This cutter head is pretty awesome. Since they don’t supply any installation instructions, your video was invaluable.

Including the magnet, and building it into the driver that comes with the planer, is a really nice touch on the manufacturer's part. Or I guess two nice touches, technically. On the not-a-nice-touch side, you would think that, since they have to be off it to install the thing, the helical head would come with the carbide teeth _not_ installed, but nooo. :) Also speaking of nice touches, those jump-cut time lapse sequences must be a royal pain to edit, but I hope you keep doing them. They're sort of becoming your signature.

On the Mywoodcutters website they say the manufacturer has to install all the cutters in order to perform final product testing of alignment, etc . Sounds reasonable to me. I also saw where Stumpy Nubs recommends putting anti-seize compound on the screws before reinstalling the cutter heads.

I've got a DW735 planer also and would love to upgrade it with the Lux Cut, cutter head. But, I've got to justify buying a $465 ($499 at the beginning of 2022) head to put into a planer I got for much less than that (I live near Stanley Works and they had a warehouse sale). Wish my wood cutters would send me one for free. I just a proletarian , not a KZbinr. Maybe my kids (or grandkids) could chip in. Love your videos, BTW. Keep up the good work

I just used your video to install my new cutter after a 2 1/2 month wait after ordering. I know it will be worth the wait! One thing I would warn others who do this install, make sure the drive belt hasn’t moved on the drive pulley when reinstalling. I decided to bump it on before installing the covers. You have to manually engage the top cover safety switch. I noticed the belt walked off the pulley a couple grooves. The problem was the belt had moved on the drive pulley.

Many thanks for the clear explanation which saved a non-mechanical person from making serious mistakes. At the end of reinstalling the blades I noticed that mine were indexed so I had to reinstall with the inscribed circles in the same orientation to keep track of future changes. Also I found it difficult at my age to reinstall the tight belt and found a great solution at " How to Replace the Belt on a Dewalt DW735 Planer".

Thanks for the video! Great help installing my Lux cutter head. One thing to add, when I emailed the company about buying a Shelix they recommended that I buy the Lux head instead. Because I owned a Lux head for my jointer, they told me the individual cutter heads would work on both tools (apparently the cutter heads are not interchangeable between Shelix and Lux). Something to consider if you plan on upgrading more than one tool.

I not only had an issue with one of the butter soft screws on the unused spring removal, but ALSO both of the sprocket screws before getting to the pulley wheel! Ugh. Drilled and used an extractor to get them out. LUCKILY I realized DeWalt saved money on all these bolts being the same so I could use the screws in the garbage from the original blades. Just finished my luxcut upgrade tonight! I was worried I was going to have to order replacement screws.

I just finished my install this evening. I ran a couple of white oak boards from trees that I fell and had rough cut to 5/4. I am very pleased with the results. As expected, the configuration does put a bit more stress on the motor if one cuts too deep for the board width…aim for no more than half of the printed maximum cut to board width as printed on the plate; if it is bugging down too much, take half of that cut depth you are trying. Great video and very much appreciated. My caveman screw driver got some action…

One thing you didn't mention, anyone doing this should make sure to get a socket as close to the size of the hole as possible, the socket needs to be pressing against the outer race of the bearing, if it presses against the inner race or the plastic part where the ball bearings are, there's a higher chance if not a guaranteed chance you'll damage/destroy the bearing.

Interesting thought: why not cut the top out of one storage area, leaving a gap in the miter saw bench. Raise planer into the gap for use, lower to use miter saw. Long bench helps eliminate snipe.

The DeWalt D735 is a dependable, reasonably priced, perfectly fine light duty, DIY/Home Shop/Weekend Craftsman tool. The best upgrade is the change to the cutter head. Too bad the DeWalt has no option to order the planer with a helical cutter head from the factory.

It is one of the few modern DeWalt tools that is built like their older stuff. Great quality for what it costs, very competitive in performance with much more expensive tools and basically an incredibly good value for what it is. Unlike most of their other modern stuff which is cheap chinese crap that is badly over priced for the actual quality. It is a shame really as I've had some amazing Dewalt tools over the years, but largely avoid them now because of how far their quality has fallen.

Thanks for the video, great help! I made a couple of changes, though: I unscrewed the helical gear from the old head while it was still in the planer, then used a wrench socket to drive the bearing out. I installed the gear on the new head before inserting it to make it a little easier to guide it through the bearing seat hole. Also, there's a gap between when the large bearing engages its seat and when the smaller bearing engages, so I cranked the planer up high, put a narrow block of wood in the opening under the head, then lowered the planer until the head was sitting on the block and it looked like the small bearing was lined up with its seat. Then I drove the large bearing into place, making small adjustments to the height as the gap got smaller and I could better see when the alignment was off.

I mentioned it in your video about upgrading the thickness planer with the cart and cutter head; make sure that the milled pockets are scrupulosity cleaned before cinching the inserts down, they can break if there's just a little bit under them - whether that happens in use or just during the tightening process is a crap-shoot

It all seems to work very well (figured maple is my test) and the cutting zzzip is pleasing, but the motor just screams. I wish I had seen your version first before I start my transplant surgery. I too found c clip pliers were useless with circ clips then found my long pointy pliers did the job great the 1st time. As you did. I use Small 6mm box socket to remove the spiral end of the cutter at gear box end. Rather than using a brass hammer.. not smart as you quickly found out. I also use 35mm dowel excellent to knock out old cutter from gear box end once the spiral helix bit was removed first using the 6mm box socket

@@Conradlovesjoy I have changed my mind and went ahead with €550 cutter head for my Metabo DC260. Best investment i ever did. Not to have to spend 1-2 hours changing blades like with old machine alone is worth it. If any nail, screw etc. hit cutter head i just rotate small square blades 90 degrees in less than minute and keep working on my tasks. €550 is a lot to pay for cutter head though.

5:53 (Grab a 34 millimeter socket) Just a helpful tip for the next person to do this like I just did, you’ll want a 34 millimeter socket for the bearing to be set back in. Make sure it’s one of the extended sockets so you don’t hit the spindle while you’re whacking away

I used a deep socket to set the new cutter head into place, being careful to not damage the bearings. However, I didn't damage the bearings because the socket I used had an interior section slightly smaller than the shaft where the threads stop. So as I pounded away to set everything into place, I was flatting out the shaft just a tiny bit and the pulley would not go back on the shaft. I had to take a file and remove the damage I had done. I got lucky.

Normally I’d do that but don’t know if these would be the exception since none of the vids show that and it would be such a pain to get into all 40 cutter heads later for corrosion maintenance. You keep referring to a 23mm socket. That's a really weird size. 24mm is a very common size, and is much closer to 15/16ths of an inch. Would a 24mm be appropriate?

AkselA I thought I’d remembered seeing that...thanks for saving me the trouble of googling it. Turns out to be the torque value recommended for most bike screws, so a bicycle torque wrench would be a cheap, small tool to keep with the T-handle screwdriver that came with the cutter head.

Am I the only one that had everything prepared as per the video, then when It comes time to hammer the new cutter head in, not one of my sockets could do the job. I think it would help immensely if you specified the size of socked and that it needs to be a deep socket or at least 3/4" drive that fits the shaft.

I can always learn from KZbin about 99% of what is needed to do just about anything. It's that last 1% however that leaves my machine in pieces scattered about my workshop until I divine what it was that the video left out. In this case the means of placing BOTH bearings into their journals at the SAME time. Before you gently tapped in the pulley side bearing in you forgot to tell us how to support the gearbox side while doing so. I aligned it a best I could, but could not see the GB bearing was not in place until AFTER following your instructions, or rather those left out. I hope I didn't damage anything while doing so. Please provide the missing information ASAP so I can put my machine back together before the mice make a nest of it.
