Yes, these super-messy areas are greebles. Greebles are all kinds of "useless but important" clutter in an area to break the monotony and give it some kind of action, some kind of feeling that there are things that are vital for the function of whatever they are attached to. This method is widely used in CGI-making, though the name may vary. Greeble was the initial name, created by Lucas himself, who founded ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) who made the models. Foundation Imaging, who did all the stuff for Babylon 5, which also has tons of these things across all stations and ships calls them Nurnies, and the team that made the models for 2001: A Space Odyssey called them Wiggets. Generally, Greeble is the more common and widely used term. Star Treks interiors also have them often (and look at the sensor pallets on the ships! Greeble-topia!), the Aliens-francise relies heavily on them, Close Encounter of the Third Kind is basically made out of Greebles, Batteries not Included also featured them heavily.

Fusion reactors are super safe (they don't have a meltdown possibility at all) notwithstanding the operating radiation, which would probably be below background anyway

I know you prefer above ground transit simply because it's visible but the underground industry seems like a decent lore explanation as to why Asturis doesn't have underground passenger rail or subways. I can imagine much of the industry being there to support labs in many of the office buildings or whatever it takes to build the ultra strong cables needed for the space elevator.

Asturis has the craziest zoning laws I've ever seen. It definately reminded me of Coruscant.

WOW! This is brutal! I love it! I would like to see more of these areas around the city in the future... I was also wondering if you have some sort of agricultural area planned for Asturis... maybe some sort of vertical farms or maybe a high-tech ground-level farming area. Its fun to imagine Asturis being completely self sufficient in terms of energy, industry, food, etc.

Something that would've perhaps sold the 'going under the whole city' thing even more is if some of the super-high-density blocks had areas which sunk below street level, alongside the higher levels where machinery for those specific buildings are. I think the transport hub already does this a little bit, as does one area near some park or another where I recall two different styles of blocks that overlap, one being elevated above the other but only covering half the space. I think one of my favorite details in these industrial areas has to be the catwalks. They're relatively standardized in size, and even if some are a thinner variant they'll still have similarly sized railings and stairs, so they immediately show just how massive something is when next to them. The train lines being built directly 'over' the sunken pipe area is a close second, though; that is an incredible aesthetic. Seeing the scar as it is makes me wonder on how Asturis would've been built. These huge buildings need some substantial foundations, which I assume would just be the entire ceiling of the block's underground sections with support pillars anywhere they'll fit, and all the weight of the tunnels diverted to those areas. But presumably there would be a time during construction where the eventually-underground areas are open to the sky, before the surface is replaced and the towers go up atop that. Clearly, the scar isn't meant to be one of those just unintentionally left forever open - it's got none of those pillars and so forth for the areas above, and all the smokestacks and entrances are there. But it is interesting to think about how it would've just been built like any other place, initially. On the topic of entrances, the placement makes me a little surprised that there isn't some high-importance cargo line from the high speed rail that cuts through the city that diverts to it - it's _right_ there next to the track, after all. But I suppose if that was needed it could just be sent to the normal station and carted underground anyways.
@Gelatinocyte29 ай бұрын
I imagine The Scar is some kind of holdout of old, "diesel era" tech/industry, judging by the fires it's spitting out on some of the vertical pipes. The trains in there also kind of look like trams - and cargo trams are a thing, especially in the past; so I guess Asturis has a network of cargo trams, which would be narrow enough to allow space for the foundations of the larger buildings going deep. The underground industrial road network would also house the utilities and other such infrastructure, probably, so I imagine they double as maintenance tunnels.

I think Asturis, the Space Elevator and now this industry complex need a BIG energy generation project. Maybe a giant solar or wind farm, maybe a big damn, maybe all of the above. ⚡

Doing so beautiful and functional those parts is something so hard that makes the whole build even better. You make it elegant, coherent, aesthetic and, heck, I guess even those on the high floors that could watch it from above won't complain as the area feels impressive as long as you like these technical parts that make a city going. I imagine a lot of people actually wanting to have a view of such a nicely developed area. Thanks for another great build, Akruas.

Honestly my favourite build you've done so far. Been playing Cyberpunk recently and absolutely inlove with the gritty futuristic industry style in that game and you capture it so well. Would love to see some smaller like 'mini scars' throughout the city, maybe just like a small cutaway with exhaust vents, chimneys and pipping extruding from the undercity. Keep up the amazing work!
