Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Жыл бұрын

For this underground mine explore we start by driving the Jeep as far as we could up a narrow and remote canyon in the mountains of Death Valley. After reaching an impasse we hiked the rest of the way up the canyon until we came to the historic abandoned mine site. Once there we found a very large ore bin and the associated lower tram terminal of an aerial tram. After exploring the ore bin and the mechanical equipment of the tram, we found the steep trail that leads high up the mountain to the mine and to the upper tram terminal. We first explored the underground mine drifts and found some interesting artifacts and workings. We then headed over to the trestle that leads to the tram terminal. The upper tram terminal is very interesting and the equipment to move the tram buckets up and down is all still there. We hope you enjoy the explore of this beautiful area and the historic mine and mining equipment.

The side dump car at the bottom is not part of the truck up in the mine, as its a swivel dump truck. i worked that mine back in the early 1990s and i am the one that hauled the gas engine and elevator winch up to the top of the tram. We gave up using the too and fro tram and used the elevator winch to haul one of the tram buckets up and down the tram cable. The name of the mine is the Gold Spur mine, and you missed one tunnel about 75 feet above the canyon floor. i worked the mine on top for about 3 months before i climbed up the small canyon from the main canyon and found a tunnel that was started to run under the ore body and followed a 4 foot wide clay seam. a flash flood had removed the dump because it was mostly fine clay. Up in the main mine, i drilled one hole into the stope and hit a pocket of pure iron pyrite that rained glitter like pyrite down on me. In the early 1990s there was a nice road to the camp at the bottom of the tram and i drove a car to the camp with no problem.
@TomandJulieMineExploring

Thanks for adding all that information, I really appreciate it. I didn't think that side dump car at the bottom would have had a swivel like that one inside the mine. I saw what looked like the box from the truck that is in the mine way down below in the canyon below. Someone must have sent it off the edge. The tram operates as I suspected, just the one bucket up and back. How did you manage to get the engine and tranny up there? If I ever get back there I'll look for the lower working. Thanks again for the comment!👍👍

I wouldn't want to be there if there was a down poor! Reminded me of when a friend and I gone on a hike in the Badlands of South Dakota, after about two miles, realized we were in a canyon or wash and the sides to steep to climb and if it rained, maybe miles away, we could be in big trouble and better turn around. I was glad to see it was a sunny day there. Merry Christmas.

Hi Tom and Julie. That engine and Transmission is an L series engine possibly an L1600 built from around 1967-1978 Most likely in the US from a Datsun 510 Sedan. If you figure Datsun car bodies didn't last very long in those days, your probably looking at that mine being in operation as late as the mid 70s to mid 80s.
@TomandJulieMineExploring

Awesome explore. The mine cart truck you found in the mine actually wasn't to the side dumper at the bottom. Rather, some idiots rolled the box from that truck off the top trestle back in the 70 or 80s. You can still see it down in the gulley.

Tram and ore tram bucket definitely old school, thirties and forties. That datsun engine and trans from a later period, someone came back in the eighties and reworked it when gold prices went up. A lot of time and energy went into that place, looks like the ore body played out pretty quickly though. Probably not a lot of profit made on that venture.

I think you're spot on with the analysis. I would guess it was first worked before the 30's even. By the time the tram was put in around the 30's and the 70's engine obviously from a later operator. Thanks for your input, Ivan. Much appreciated!👍👍

Another to grab total interest. You note the view, I'm grateful to see it. The bins and tram system is probably as complete as any could be? I tried to consider how many tram cars they used to fill the triple bin? Then, thinking of the mule train wagons loaded for processing. I wonder where they chose to process. The history is interesting, even though we don't know for this? Maybe you or Julie read something? I was thinking about natural slate tiles when I saw those dark bands in the stoped area by that pillar.

Hello Tom and Julie, Very interesting. It's obviously an old mine that was reworked in the '90's or later. Seems like it was still Datsun in the '80's. I'm guessing that the later operation used only one tram bucket and the winch ran it up and down. All of the air hose and fittings looked fairly new. Wheelbarrow did not look very old. Oh, 12# rail. Thanks for the tour.

Thanks for the tag-along! All the way through the journey I was imagining the miners/prospectors that might be exploring in this area. It seems so random. Perhaps it is more "hey, this looks like no one has been back here and everyone will leave us alone". I imagined it being much older, however, with the relatively "recent" engine the explorers were there not that long ago. I appreciate the respect you demonstrate by leaving everything intact just as you find it, for others to experience it, too.

Yes, it's often amazing how the miners accomplished what they did. It's difficult to walk up there much less build a mine and tram. Thanks for watching, Phil!👍👍

Your explanation on how this type of tram worked was great! Thankfully, there was enough there for us to see up close what you were talking about. From the looks of the Nissan engine, this tram may have worked 40 years ago, plus or minus? The artifacts inside were cool as well! Quite the hike up to the mine but for me, it was so worth it. I can't thank you guys enough for this channel and what you do with it. Happy Holidays to all!
@TomandJulieMineExploring

We're happy that you enjoyed seeing the tram and how it worked. I would guess that the mine was started in the 1930's or earlier. I think that this was a gravity tram that was converted to the engine for power later on. I think it was still being operated as recently as the late 70's. Thanks for the comment and Happy Holidays to you, William!👍👍

Wow! Just started watching the video and this is one of your many video surprises! Love the finds that you meet up with during your visit. Great ore car pieces and the incredible tram. A lot of sulphur still in its natural state, couldn’t believe that it was a part of that location. Great trestle find and looks like they had this operating in the 60s - 70s with that engine? Another fascinating find, you both come up with the best videos ! Stay Safe and see you on your next mining adventure! Have a Happy New Year !😊🎉

You know me, I would like the hiking but once I find the mine I would call it good... LOL. Plenty of stuff to check out outside the mine for me... Just amazes me the equipment investment just left behind... I suspect it would cost more to remove it than just abandon it...
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Yes, lots of cool stuff outside. I think you're correct that it would be less expensive to leave all the equipment behind than to pull it out. Remember that mine owners and/or claim holders could want to sell the mine at some point, so all the infrastructure would be an asset and selling point. Thanks for watching, Max!👌👍
