Nuclear waste illegally dumped in a Missouri landfill during the 1970s may be under threat from an underground fire that's been burning at the landfill for five years. Worried residents are fired up as well. Vinita Nair has the story.

The problem with law and regulation is in inaction until a harm is done instead of proactively averting harm before it is done.

@@MrRichard57000 While I supported the development of the Keystone XL Pipeline, I also sided on caution as well. The way our states and government officials operate is to either create a law first to vet it out, or to build some questionable infrastructure to see if is safe... kind of a catch-22. My point here is, that was an Environmental Impact Statement for the Keystone XL Pipeline that clearly showed a potential for harm and destruction of natural underground water sources. For this, I highly agree that more had to be done to advert this; not by building over these areas, but by diverting away from them. However, as planned, they would build first then test... that is something I do not agree with. So, when it comes to certain environmental issues, I am for safety first. However, I would not block all projects because of some small, minor environmental harm that can be cleaned up easily from an accident; like stripping old-growth death trees from forests that cause more potential harm for fires than how the present system of preservation and restrictions in place in California. I think you and I may agree on some things, but unlikely to agree on all things. ; )

@@muzkat101 I don 't disagree with you on all points... The thing is back in the 60 s when they dumped this material there were no plans for it to recover it on the future, either didn t care or didn t know... Don 't know much about legislation in your country but back then those companies could burry their crap on their own site. Dumps like this or story's from Hanford, or rockrtdyne find them very interesting... And unbelievable at the same time, greetings from the Netherlands

@@MrRichard57000 When it comes to aerospace companies here in SoCal, there are still many sites here that are contaminated by their projects and dumping despite some cleanup efforts they've made. I think we are going to deal with it for a very long time, sadly.

A easy answer would be to dig it up & move it to a breakdown site.

what happened was when they made they made the nuclear bomb they put the nuclear waste underground and dumped it into a creek. And a underground fire is heading towards the barrel of nuclear waste.

Trump Tweet: Dislike this, Fake News. Everything is fine as I am on it. (Takes a swing on the 8th hole in Florida). So where's the update on this CBS? Hate when you guys post something and then forget about it. I researched hours on this topic in 2015 and it went dead. That's not cool!
