Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Күн бұрын

There is a must see ore vein, for any rock hound or geologist, in this abandoned Nevada copper mine. We worked our way through the tangle of drifts and stopes following the miners footsteps from long ago. The beautiful mineral vein contains all the usual colors of the copper ores commonly found in copper mines. We followed a passage way down to where it came to a ladder going down. We climbed down the ladder system to see where it ended up. We also explored another nearby drift where once again the copper bearing minerals were on full display. We hope you enjoy the video!

Merry Christmas and the Happiest and Safest New Year. Late watching today: my wife's birthday! That mine reminded me of a copper mine I was in once in Michigan's Copper Country. It was said that the Cornish miners could smell copper and just followed their noses. Also, they and the Finnish could construct fantastic walls of waste rock that seemed to stand forever.

Hey Tom and Julie, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you both. Once, many years ago, i got into a similar vein in Nevada. In that vein was another vein that my friend called "Blue Drussy". It was a copper silicate like chrysocola but it looked and had the hardness of quartz. The stuff cut like diamonds. For a size 11 shoe box we got $35,000. I saw some in that mine y'all just explored. Also, the crucibles would tell me that there was a assay lab somewhere around there. Peace!

Hey Tom and Julie. Tom you are quite daring free climbing on ladders that are 80 to 100 years old or older. I know if the ladder is not exposed to the elements many times it is still intact which seems to be the case here, but you encounter these tight spots and with your backpacks you have to be careful not to nudge or loosen anything creating a cave in among other things. I have faith in you Tom but there is always that one time. You got to know how to pick em which you do quite well. In closing, I will second the Miss America comment because I agree. Best,
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Hi Alan. Yes, deciding which ladders to trust is part of the game we play and is also part of the excitement of mine exploring. Similar to rock climbing, you need to continually assess each step as you go. Still, things can happen fast with not so good results. So far, we have been fortunate to have not made any costly mistakes. Is this the one where Julie said something about being the dirty miss America? That was pretty funny. Thanks for the comment!👍😁

Those Crucibles are for Fire Assays. Fire assay procedures use a combination of intense heat (1900 °F) that is produced by a furnace, dry reagents called fluxes, and bone ash containers called crucibles and cupels. One uses this combination to fuse the fluxing agents and to isolate the precious metals.😀

Maybe the Tommyknockers are messing with me. I didn't take a picture of it because it was a different brand than I have seen before and I wanted to get Julie so she could see it. I couldn't find the darn thing again. It was about 3/4 of a wood box in good condition. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you, Bob!👌🎄

Soooo...if you were driving along on the Bonneville salt flats then you had crossed over into Utah. Just curious where the location of this particular mine was? A little while ago I did some exploring around in the Newfoundland mountain range, which is in the middle of the salt flats, slightly northeast of the location of the Bonneville Speedway. I located some abandoned (and mostly caved) copper mines throughout that area, which looked very similar in geology and mineralogy to the mine featured in this video. As always, another great mine explore. Always a pleasure to share in your adventures!

Did I say we were on the Bonneville Salt Flats? If I did, I was just trying to be funny. This is in Nevada in the next canyon to the north of New York Canyon near Luning and Mina. If you like copper mines, this area is a must-see. We have made several videos of the mines in this canyon and especially New York Canyon. There might be some more information in the video description. Thanks for watching!👍😁

Seeing the colors makes me wonder. If the amount of copper colored minerals that were left weren’t worth taking, what did the mineral deposit look like that they took? Huge walls of blue? Things that make me go hmmm.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 2 жыл бұрын
I think the same type of things. Why didn't they take what looks like rich ore. You have to know though that the miners knew exactly what they were doing and what is worth taking and what is not. Thanks for the comment, Ed!👍👍

Hi, so I see your now exploring in Utah,it’s been many years since I have traveled through this area. Utah is a very nice state. Yes that is a crazy copper mine, but the blue veins are fantastic! We’re these to the northwest side of Bonneville? Ladders are in great condition looks like they were built not long ago.How are the temperatures in these mines? That fuel can looked like the Crown fuel company? Maybe the Crown Petrochemical co ? Just a guess. Hope you had fun as I wish I would get the energy back to be doing what you are doing! Another great video, may you strike it rich on your next adventure! Thanks and stay safe in your travels!

Hi, Ron. While Utah is a beautiful state and has a lot of mines in it this mine happens to be in Nevada. We keep forgetting to check the temperature in the mines we've been in lately. The ladders are solid, but some are not plumb, so it makes climbing them very awkward. That's a good guess on the fuel can. I tried looking up some company logos but couldn't find a match. I'll look for the Crown logo. Thanks for the nice comment. Happy Holidays to you!❤️👍🎄

Someone else might have named the blue mineral already but if so I'll name it again since I've nothing better to do which gives me lots of time to watch your videos. Chances are it is Azurite, a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It gets it's name from guess where? The deep blue azure of a late evening sky. Or maybe the sky was named after it? At any rate, Azurite can be used for jewelry and is sometimes found in weathered Azurite blue berrys but don't eat them, they can cause gas which is not a good thing considering all the climate rigmarole going on and mines with poor circulation. Pretty cool video though. Thanks, both of you.

Is copper still mined today, and how… mines or surface striping?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Larry. Yes, copper is definitely mined today and I think it is all done by strip, or open, mining techniques. That is the same for gold, silver and most other minerals and metals. There are very few large commercial underground mines left in operation. Arizona and New Mexico are both big copper producers. 👍👍

I think it is somewhat rare to find real turquoise because it is formed by a fairly complex set of circumstances. I do think that it does start with certain copper bearing minerals. Thanks for commenting!👍👍

I don’t know how to make contact with you ? I’d rather not put my contact info on here. I know I f several areas that even I would like to know more about what’s underneath the ground. I’m in Las Vegas though. Perhaps we could meet sometime. Your videos are by far the best explore videos on KZbin. Your doing great work, work that should’ve been done long ago. Going into those holes brings out many things, mainly-truth. The “Emerald” circle. All of those ghost towns which started with Mountain View, which was right there where the Weber Reservoir was built, Mountain View was the last stop on rail before the ore was taken to Virginia City and or Empire. Old Esmeralda County was the largest County in Nevada Territory. It stretched from Bodie California, to Lyon County. Sadly, there want too much good to come of any of those towns, as they were built mainly through trickery and deceit. The illegal mining in Nevada killed Mono Lake and Walker Lake, along with hundreds of thousands of innocent souls trying to carve out an existence in that desert. Stephen Weber was brought out from Washington in the early 1900’s to “refurbish” the water supply depleted by the Rawhide Mineral & Water company. Weber Reservoir was the result, never meant to do anything other than resaturate the ground water supply, thing is, Mr Weber was a man of god, an honest engineer whom went against the grain of what those powers that he wanted. The only choice the Emerald Ring had, they killed him, right behind a building in Yerington which is still there. Going into those holes, as I’ve been in many myself, does a lot of good. I can’t go into the good it does on here, but what your doing is incredibly important. Weber Reservoir originally was supposed to have been built much further up River, but the Emerald Ring needed to cover up their debacle of theft which they did, right underneath the current location of Weber Reservoir. Anyhow, I could go on and on with the facts of the area, but overall, someday, I think I’d rather sit down with you two and have coffee and a chat. I think you’d be very interested to know the truths of the area and why a guy like me finds your channel so valuable. Respectfully, Robert M
