From Ben Folds Five’s 1995 debut self-titled album, Underground is a song in a style Ben Folds describes as “Punk rock for sissies”. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a group of social outcasts seeking a place to fit in in the underground music scene. The original recording features the 3 members of the band on Keys, bass, drums, and
vocals. The song is in B major, and follows the typical pop form with a chorus, verse, and a bridge. It does also have a lighthearted spoken intro, as well as a jazzy outro where the time switches from 4/4 to a 6/8 jazz waltz. As Ben Folds was the leader of the band, as well as a trained jazz pianist, the harmonies and chord extensions can be quite complex.
