Underoath - Three Thoughts on Christianity
For more than 15 years Underoath has been sharpening its fierce eloquence when it comes to pounding out the Christian-slanted hard rock that has earned the band a glowing global rep. Blending post-hardcore and heavy metal with a decent dose of screamo, the Tampa outfit featuring Aaron Gillespie and Spencer Chamberlain has moved from blustery broadsides like “I’ve Got Ten Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain’t Gonna Do Jack” to refined explosions such as those that dot their first disc in eight years, ‘Erase Me.’ The album hits hard. From “Bloodlust” to “I Gave Up” the band rails through a storm of sound. But that sound is no-longer associated with overt Christian perspectives. Chamberlain has told the press that they “couldn’t grow musically” under that banner, and once they let it go they “became healthy, happy....and were able to create again.” Our ‘Three Thoughts’ interview finds them amplifying that notion, with the guys questioning recent actions in the name of Christianity. “When you believe in the rules and not the reason [behind them], then you got an issue,” says Gillespie. Watch them shoot from the hip about the act of speaking truth to power.

Yep, and I completely agree. It may not always seem like it, and it may be hard for some to understand, but other people's expectations of you can really lead you into a dark place if you don't balance the things that are truly important to you. In the context of Christianity, it seems like people expect perfection of you or they expect you to follow all the rules, question nothing, and uphold this image of being a good Christian. It's a lot to deal with, especially if you're already having a rough time and all you hear are people telling you what they think you did wrong. Even if it comes from a good place, it makes you feel like they don't actually care about you and that they'd rather focus on your wrongdoings and failures. Organized religion in general tends be guilty of that, and it turns people away, even when it's not necessarily the belief itself that's wrong. It's some of the people around you and how they choose to apply their beliefs to themselves and others.

I have the opposite experience when I went through depression and suicidal thoughts. No one else helped me except my brothers and sisters in Christ. No one else prayed for me or called me or brought me food. But above all that the Lord just spoke to me through His Word. He was my ultimate source of comfort and peace. I learned a long time ago that you’ll never find a perfect church with perfect people, and certainly not with me in it.

See I’m a Christian but I have had these exact same thoughts & questions. The problem is, it is almost impossible to ask these questions if still call yourself a Christian. I admire that they are deconstructing their faith and asking the tough things openly to start discussions. I wish these were more normalized within the Christian community, God never said we weren’t allowed to be curious or ask questions. It’s the people that shame us or make us feel like we’re not “Christian enough” for even suggesting we’re not perfect
@darrenthetuber743

Honestly this is better for them as a band, because they're not held to religious but an honest standard which probably is harder but more freeing, they can ask tough questions without having to question themselves about questioning.
@kaegee2579

Exactly! I think everyone's just trying to find a place where they feel good and content but, in order to do that, we have to ask questions and then find the answers to these questions. For many of us, knowing creates a sense of peace and helps eliminate cognitive dissonance. So I honestly hate when believers are shunned for merely asking questions or for reaching different conclusions.

It's all in the same: God, Family, Church. Turning your back on one is the same as God & The Bible says a startling thing about a lukewarm faith: It tells us that God detests it. He even warns, “So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Does that sound harsh? It may at first - but remember: Jesus Christ left the glory of heaven and willingly shed His blood on the cross for us. He loves us that much! How can we remain indifferent to Him? If this describes you, don’t despair. God wants to forgive you and draw you closer to Himself - and He will, as you repent of your sin and commit yourself without reserve to Christ. Begin a new journey with Christ today. Then get in a church where Christ is preached and lived, so you can continue to grow in your faith. You’ll never regret it.

"When you believe in the rules and not the reason, then you got an issue." aaronrgillespie hit it spot on. Spencer said what everyone of faith has seen at some point in their lives, judgmental people of faith speaking out against fellow people of faith. God doesn't ask you to vilify your brothers and sisters in Christ, he teaches us to love, accept, and care for them, and when you don't do that, you're apart of the problem....

Where did Jesus say to “love accept and care for others”? I agree we should love others, but the Bible defines that as telling them the truth regardless of the consequences. Which is exactly what we see the martyrs of the faith doing and being killed for. I can give you chapter and verse for where Jesus actually said multiple times to judge, just not by appearance or hypocritically. Matthew 7:1-7 and John chapter 8. This “don’t judge, just accept everyone” Christianity isn’t biblical. Sorry, it’s just not. That is indeed Americanized, 21st century nonsense. Jesus sure won’t be doing that when He sends people into outer darkness. Don’t be a hypocrite is the exclusion. If you’re a drunkard you need to repent and not be trying to call someone else out. But if you aren’t a drunkard, you have every right as a Christian to hold your brother/sister accountable if they’ve fallen into drunkenness. Sounds to me like these Underoath dudes didn’t like that and/or experienced hypocrites so they are using that as an excuse to be their own gods...

American Christianity is a deeply flawed system. It has become less about the purity of doctrine and more about selling a product or idea and it has gone so far away from what the truth of scripture actually teaches. If you get enough people into a good thing eventually some of those people will figure out a way to commercialize it and capitalize on it until it becomes a bad taste in everyone’s mouth even though what is being sold by the same name doesn’t even resemble the original product to begin with. I recommend watching the documentary “American Gospel: Christ Alone”

"Hey unloving, i will love you" those lyrics they wrote themselves failed to materialize in the real world for them. i was a newborn christian in 10th grade over ten years ago thanks to Underoath. Then over time, i developed a distaste for how inconsistent the church was. So many denominations, so many different outlooks and mindsets. It became redundant to me. I was a methodist, then go to a baptist church and they felt more free, then attended a southern baptist (yes its different) and felt negative messages from the pastor. christianity is a mess and i couldn't stay true. if i were to label myself, its agnostic. id one hundred percent love to devote myself to a creator, but its impossible if you aren't someone thats good enough and visually different as the general populus of christians are very judgemental. "general" is the majority. i lucked out during high school going to a backroads church where everyone were just farmers and joke cracking tobacco smokers, they loved us new kids coming in to church sunday wearing black. go to a church where the population isnt just 34 people and over 340, thats when you start realizing how judgemental and horrible the christian community is as a whole.

@@phylazen5649 I actually used to go to church with Aaron Gillespie, (Primarily his wife and son Joel, who was just a baby at the time, which they attended every Sunday.) It was a really nonjudgmental, young hipster church. Aaron's wife worked at Starbucks at the time, she would bring the steel coffee machines over and let everyone enjoy it, back then. Church was held in the little New Port Richey's (A small town on the west coast of Florida, about 45 minutes north west of Tampa...) Seacoast theatre, built in the 1930s, I believe. Maybe even 20s. Funny enough, I've never seen Aaron drum live or UO, but was drumming for the church and you know what that means, ;) Yes, Aaron's seen me drum live, but I've yet to ever witnessed the legend himself perform live and in person. It's very unfortunate that you guys have had such a negative experience with Christian community. This is why I get upset with some Christians in America. I've been a Christian for about 10 years and have seen how people who claim to be followers of Christ isolate themselves from people who they consider to be "sinners" That is such bullshit. When we look at the life of Christ, he wasn't hanging out with people who thought they were righteous but with the prostitutes, tax collectors, and people in poverty. I have had the privilege to be around an awesome Christian community for a number of years. I've seen the ways that people can be honest about their lives and be accepted with open arms. I pray that God will be placing genuine Christian's in your life. I think a good verse is Romans 15:7 "Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory." Aaron is still somewhat Christian. He has stated on the Bad Christian podcast that he still prays and that he still believes in God, but it's more of a personal spirituality, and by definition agnostic, since he doesn't know that there is a God. Spencer is agnostic. One of the other guys is Christian, while another is an atheist. The rest are also agnostic. Honestly, I see both sides of the argument. I think that Christianity as a modern religion is just spiritual materialism. If some movement catches on, there's at least ten books on Christianity with themes borrowed from that movement. If there's an app on meditation and mindfulness, there's an app where you basically contemplate scriptures with the sounds of rain or something else that you can find on a meditation app. I don't think this is a bad thing, but it just seems to me that Christianity is trying to keep up with the many fads and other odd things in the secular world, but it just seems insincere and ultimately contradictory in the end. I don't hate religion or Christians. I tried to see if I could be a Christian, but I just don't buy all the supernatural and theistic stuff. I have looked at other religions as well, and I think that it's better for me to be a secular Humanist of sorts. I think of what would best best for me, and that's to be as good a person as I can be. I love people, animals, and this planet we all call home. The only way we can solve our problems is by cutting all the crap and banding together, rather than doing all this set trippin' that we're currently doing.

I took a spiral down the old road of addiction, selfishness, and godlessness. Full turn, Christ has me in His hands. I’ll never forget the journey you brought me through, nor will I judge where the two of you are now. The flock is small, but the majority is not of the flock. Full heartedly knowing christ wouldn’t treat you like that breaks my heart. You did deserve more, and still do. Christ followers can take away from this and learn we all have our stains. It's not the timechange that makes religion good or bad, it's the mindset you need to have to be religious which makes it bad overall. Sure it can be great for some people and did good things, overall in a modern society like you said, religion is pretty backwards thinking and not really being progressive at all. Modern times need modern way of living, a 2000 years old book on morals doesn't really work imo.

@@Th3Snipe I'd be curious to hear what mindset you think religious people all have. Have you read solid Christian thinkers like CS Lewis or Dostoevsky? I would argue that not all "progress" actually moves us towards where we need to be. If Jesus was the son of God, then there's nowhere to progress from him in terms of one upping him in some way. The progress that matters most is moral progress, and since we all have evil in our hearts, there's plenty of journeying to do.

@@AJ-me1dg I'm sorry but you're misunderstanding me because of my lack of knowledge of the english language to express myself correctly. I never meant all religous people have the same mindset. What I'm trying to say is I think it's wrong to teach kids about god at such a young age. You don't let kids study quantum mechanics so why tell them everything we see and know and do is made and done by some sort of greater entity. Let someone figure out life how they want to instead of teaching them about some greater thing that controls their life in which case they're less likele to think about things themselves. Science rarely came from deeply religious people because people who fill the unanswered question with god are not the ones looking for actual answers if you know what I'm trying to say. Alot of horrible things happen due to religion because it's being thaught wrong to some, like in extremists ways. That's what I think is wrong with relgion, extreme believes ruin certain potentials. TL;dr: I love everyone no matter what the believe in and I never meant to disrespect. All I'm saying is start teaching people about religion when they have a fully developed brain to comprehend the things religion tries to teach so anyone can make a fair choice in if they want to believe or not.

For example, you said science rarely came from deeply religious people. What about people like Georges Lemaître? He's the guy who came up with the big bang theory, and he was a Catholic Priest. They are looking to themselves to get saved not looking to the sacrifice that Christ did for them. Real Christianity is based on what Christ did for us and believing in Him, not our own actions. Because you know what man, the Bible says there is not one good thing that dwells in us, so because of that I can’t trust in my own goodness to get to heaven. Sure “Christianity” seems it’s about a good life & offers all great things. But Christ wasn’t all about that. He also spoke about how following him would mean that the work would hate us. And that speaking about him would would bring persecution. Christianity is no where near about living a good life although as the Bible says, it’s a gift from God to live one, it is more about putting our faith that Christ is the way to eternal life. A life in paradise. If you really don’t mind what happens after we’re gone. Then all this life doesn’t matter cause it would cease to exist. Then why would it matter? But if people keep living, even after death then why would it matter if we lived a happy life when you’d live one after, forever in heaven. The only way to God is through Christ :) but yes there are many ways to be happy

Well, no need to boast about atheism here - given the fact that all te loudest atheists are kind of republicans minus the god-speak. Radical atheists too behave very often with a religious kind of zeal. They support more guns, they support Zionism (because they see Israel as a protective wall against their Islamophobic conspiracist thoughts), heck they even support torture (Sam Harris). Name me one thing in which especially the New Atheists differ from Christian American Republicans - there is none (apart from the god-speak, which is an irrelevant detail). So let's just consider all those "identities" suspicious. No one "is" (just) Christian or "is" (just) atheist, etc. Those labels are not always as different as people think.

No doubt it is a painful experience. But if you truly want to rebel against what you feel is the established brand of Christianity that so hurt you. Forgive them. Nothing could be more enlightening for them to have this person they judged so harshly to show to them the Christ like attitude they themselves failed to exemplify. What could be more radical and more rebellious than that? To truly forgive them and show them Jesus love. Sure , be pissed at established " Christiananity" but do not give up on Jesus. People have failed you. People will likely to continue to fail you and disappoint you. Jesus will never disappoint or fail you.

You nailed it on the head! I was raised Catholic, and my biggest problem with it as I grew up and started to notice some questionable things was that people are only willing to accept you if you don't actually need acceptance. If your cat dies then everyone will pray for you, but if you get pregnant at 16 years old everyone looks down on you and casts you out in their eyes. This was a real thing that happened to a close friend of mine, and it was the turning point for me where I decided I was no longer Christian. I didn't want to be a part of that. It's all about selling an image of purity. From my experience of the church, everyone wants to believe that if you trust in god and follow his plan then everything is all smiles and sunshine. But isn't that the exact opposite of what it should be? There's a whole concept of humans being human that the church talks about all the time, yet when it comes down to a real-world scenario of a human making a human mistake, they're treated differently. If there is a god, then he knows that humans can never be perfect beings. People get hurt and people act according to their own will, that's just what being human is. It should never be about only allowing the perfect into a place of perfection, but that's what it's become. It should be about a perfect god helping those who can never have that perfection. I don't know that I believe in any god, but I know that I certainly don't believe in the golden calf that modern Christianity has created.

However, I would encourage you to consider that, that doesn’t mean that Christianity is wrong. That just means that there are messed up people still trying to figure it out. Yes, people have organized it and sometimes they value the organization over the person. But that doesn’t mean it reflects on Jesus Christ, savior of the world. He is still good. He is still loving. He is still forgiving. So my encouragement for you is to run to Him and His Words, find other people who are running to Him. Churches get it wrong a lot of times because we are still sinners. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on the faith. That just means I have to be that voice of truth and try to shape a culture where we reach out to everyone, love everyone, and speak truth to everyone! I was also surprised when the band members in their Bad Christian podcast interviews talked about thier own personal struggles and drama in both their own lives and with each other as well as with Christianity. I'm not here to give my thoughts on the cussing thing, the band's abandonment of Christianity, or anything else they did or are doing. Not once did these guys speak about their individual relationships with Jesus. Which is what is meant to separate the relationship from the “religion” They threw it all away due to how they were treated and threw the baby out with the bath water. Who cares how an individual feels about you if they are judging you for things that aren’t true. Walk away from that, separate yourself from those. Call them out for being fake Christians and carry on in your faith. Its true the worlds path is WIDE - it’s easier to go down your own path and be excepted by the world. It’s much harder to walk the Jesus path. This is just sad man, I loved Underoath. Haven’t listen to them in a long time but heard a few things that didn’t line up with Jesus and today that made me look this up. I hope they find Jesus again. I’m currently leaving my church being the young lead pastor is a money grabbing ego maniac. I don’t blame Christianity or Jesus for that. Unfortunately men fall. Men sin. Something Spencer keeps saying is "you're not allowed to talk about these issues in a Christian band". Isn't that an issue between Spencer and the rest of the band opposed to Spencer and Christianity? Most of what they've said here I agree with...but I feel like they're playing both sides intellectually dishonestly. I know for facts that many many many Christian fans tried to be uplifting to him when he struggled. I know a guy who gave Spencer his phone number and told him to call if he needs something. Back then you'd see Christians always saying they pray for him to overcome and everything a FAN is SUBJECTED to do within the confines of a celebratory figure. I was one of them. But he decides to pick the assholes as an example. Most Christians probably wouldn't have plastered your face as an example on a magazine cover. So why does that assholes actions who did it weigh more the the actions of those that wouldn't have done it..or rather didn't do it? Oh and in the Bible God, 9/10, never had an issue with being questioned.

You unbelievers on the other hand are stumbling and tripping their way through life while they lie to themselves that they are standing upright and secure.

I'm a Psych major, and studying Aaron's body language and interaction, it seems Spencer is pushing more for this than Aaron is. Some of the things Spencer mentions in other interviews is that UO has never had Christian lyrics, which long-time listeners can say that's a false statement. Also, Aaron released spiritual material through The Almost and his solo albums. Do I care if they're Christian or not? No. That doesnt define the quality of their music, it's just difficult believing true emotions when 1. I dont know then personally, and 2. Body language and interactions/emotions in video interviews are coming from only one source (Spencer).

I agree with most of this. Those of you who think your churches are perfect and that they just associated with the wrong Christians or the wrong churches should stop attending church every week and let a few Christians know you’re going out partying. I’d say most of you will see a very different side to your church. Like most of the people in these comments, most Christians are only loving, kind, and accepting if you’re on track, not if you need help. And don’t say it’s about your relationship with God and not other Christians, cos I didn’t leave church because of other people (although I do fucking hate how most of them act) and I doubt Aaron and Spencer initially did either

They've been on tour most of their lives. Have they ever been planted in a Church? Have they held membership at a church and been there every week to be fed the Word? Have they been involved in a small group or community group or bible study where a few in the church community get together and build off each other? A place where they can take their burdens to each other and encourage and uplift each other and help each other? Have they been in the Word daily to see what it actually says? Have they been in prayer groups where others can come alongside them in their burdens and life each other up in prayer? This is what the church community is and if you aren't a part of it how can you claim to understand? Have they ever reached out for help at all? More than anything, they just appear to be holding a straw man argument about something they really know nothing about. We live in a fallen world and like previous comments have mentioned, if you have a jerk you can't make him the shining light for all of Christianity. It's sinful people living with other sinful people. Iron sharpen Iron.

That's fairly typical of religious zealots. Whether or not they've been any of those things is irrelevant to what they feel. However, I can tell you I was part of a church, and a bible study, and I was a youth leader, and involved in other parts of the church, and I can happily say that their feelings about religion are completely justified, as I feel the exact same way.

As a christian, I’ve been so hurt by the church and organized religion but it doesn’t change the fact that God is loving and He is good. Cling to Him and hold onto Him like never before. He will be your help and fortress in time of need. God will never hurt you and let You down... it’s people that hurt you and let you down! Trust in God not in people... but there are good christian people out there but sadly they’re just really hard to find. People aren’t perfect. Forgive us. I can relate in the way that most "Christians" I knew did the worst things. However, I never let it distract me nor did I blame them for my mistakes. Acts 1:21-26 21“Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” 23And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. "And they cast their lots" This was always my favorite part in the Bible, when asked "why aren't you more like the Apostles" I tell people this verse and reply "I am, they walked with God in Human flesh and are still playing "Black Jack" to find the new Apostle" humans are stupid, that's why we need Christ.

What I can’t stand about all of this nonsense is that a band who made their through the music world for the most upon a “Christian” music label is seemingly throwing rocks at the people who loved them? I mean I understand that there were people in your circles who acted a huge nasty ASS, but what about us...the ones who still love you regardless of where you are? It seems like they’ve white washed all of their “Christian” fans in such a way to gain new ones... I never saw a “tweet”, FB post or even a message on the MySpace wall asking for the prayers of the saints to help through a broken marriage, struggles with drugs or whatever. I never got the message, but you bet your bottom dollar I’d have prayed sincere prayers asking for the love and mercy of God. I’m not self righteous because I know that there are plenty of us who have lived through, for lack of a better phrase, the toughest shit ever. But it because I have held on to Christ though I’ve run out of tears that I can pray for them. I hope UO reads this, because I feel like you all left us and now sneer at every given opportunity at your day 1 people. Some didn’t come just because of the music. Some of us actually love you just the way you are, but the jeering is tone deaf. I could be wrong. That’s what hurts the most because I am conflicted. My resolve is a little saying the J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote in Lord of the Rings: Not all who wander are lost. Praying for your very best no matter where you go.

I love underoath’s music but I totally disagree! I have always been encouraged to ask the hard questions as a Christian and a Christ follower and I have always been allowed to make my own mistakes. I’m sorry that so many closed minded Christians had to ruin the whole experience for these guys. But their songs seemed so overtly Christian it’s weird to see them do this. And Aaron even was at conferences speaking! It’s okay to have questions while staying grounded in what you believe in! That’s how we grow. And its okay to make mistakes because that’s where God’s grace comes in and that’s how he uses us to reach others, through the brokenness. I am perfectly aware that the band may never see this but It’s ashamed how no one was their to help them in their time of trouble and how it’s turned them away from faith! Many ppl go through life believing they are saved but at the end of the day they are just following a bunch of rules because that’s what they were taught. Coming to peace with what you believe and who you are in Christ is true salvation and I hate it that these guys never truly experienced that! Keep searching and I hope y’all find what y’all really believe and who you are! Much love ❤️

thats the reason i had to take a break from my attempts at being a christian after years of finding God. i thought i had found Him at one point, until the church i held so close to my heart told my mother she wasn't allowed to attend service anymore due to her mental illness. She had a stroke in 2007, prior to that was the choir director as well as helped dicate bible school and thursday night bible studies for the teenagers and kids. unfortunately, the stroke left her without a filter and during service while sitting in the choir would take her medication or just whisper to the person beside her random comments that made no sense. sounds annoying, yes. but my mother was a huge component to this church, she brought all kinds of children to the church primarily made up of elderly folks. but no, the new pastor who could care less of her contributions to the church that hadn't met her prior to the stroke, invited her to a hospital lobby and told her not to show her face at the church ever again. EDIT: there was no communication prior to this in terms of asking my mother if she would be willing to try and keep her comments to herself or anything of that nature. just flat out, SEE YA.

I hope that you will continue on your journey towards salvation even if human beings have the ability to either attract or terribly detract from God in most devious ways. Essentially everyone of us is called to reflect Christ and that is why when people don't live up to their calling and do even the opposite, that they end up doing even more terrible damage. My hope for you is, find the narrow road. God bless.
