As far as the vocals go, the harsh vocals are Spencer Chamberlain, who just does vocals, and the clean singing is Aaron Gillespie, their drummer!
@PaulPeavler
@PaulPeavler 2 жыл бұрын
One thing to note is that Spencer does a lot more clean vocals especially in the later albums, including all of them on the album Disambiguation when Aaron left the band for a while. The last couple albums they’ve played a lot with mixing both of their clean vocals which has been fun. I think Tim (the guitarist) also does some vocals sometimes, but that may just be for layering during live sets.

Didn't expect to see some classic 00s post-hardcore getting dissected on here. One of my favourite bands of all time and I appreciated hearing your thoughts. The call and response vocals between Aaron and Spencer were always a great selling point alongside the band's tendency to eschew traditional song structures. Lots of bands have multiple vocalists, but that level of interaction between them is much less typical. The whole album this track is from is stellar, but You're Ever So Inviting is another stand out.

Underoath got me through a lot of tough times after my dad died when I was a young teen. They’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Technically speaking, Underoath were trailblazers for moving the post hardcore scene into mainstream appeal and they have continually evolved their sound over the years. Too many good songs for me to recommend just one lol but I would recommend something from their newest album to see how much they have evolved since “Define the Great Line”. Edit: forgot to add my ubiquitous request for Circa Survive! Anything from “Descensus” would be a great entry point.

I love how you mentioned how much the bass carries the track, something I noticed when I picked up the bass and learned a couple Underoath songs myself. I can play it for hours and I've heard the band really enjoys playing it as well.

Either this album or the next has exactly one song with a chorus. One. Lol reallllly hope you dig into more of them man. We would love to get you up to speed! They were big in 2005-2010 and then popped back up in 2013 and have released another new album this past weekend. I hope you also get to hear some of their older and newer stuff because they've been all over the map when it comes to genres.

I fucking love Aaron Gillespie. Im not religious but the dude kind of saved my life and started me on a career in music(as a drummer). He's so good. I'll never forget the first time i heard underoath. People ALWAYS dog on Aaron, like, the 'legit' drummers, lol. He's not trained, no he's not referencing your favorite jazz licks, and yea he hits really fucking hard. but its sick, and you can't throw shade on the dudes hooks, not vocal hooks, drums hooks. Best drum hook writer of all time in my books, the first thing I remember about EVERY UO song is the drum part, and it always stands out to people. Those violent rim shots, wild hats, and really off beat accents create a super unique drummer that needs like, 10x the love. Sick reaction. They do have a dedicated keys/synth player in the band so those production bits are him. I think sometimes artists write entire completed songs and in the studio the production sort of bloats with a lot of additional afterthought electronic stuff that wasn't really part of the writing process. With him being in the band, it definitely introduces his part at the writing process and allows them to more thoroughly flesh them out and make them an important and deliberate component.

Great video. There are some amazing songs on this album alone that would be an amazing journey; To Whom It May Concern, Casting Such A Thin Shadow and You're Ever So Inviting are some of my favorites - Lots of different dynamics across those songs. This album was a big turning point in the band's direction.

The way you described this song as a journey is how the while album is. This album truly is a masterpiece and is perfect from front to back. The song writing, structure, album flow, emotion, power. Everything about this album is perfect. Put some headphones on, lay back, and enjoy the ride.

The fun thing about Underoath is that every album is DRASTICALLY different from the others. So many different vibes to choose from.

when done well, the mix of harsh vocals and light vocals is one of the coolest things in metal. This song achieves this so well, one of the best of its era.

So you’ve hit Badflower, Motionless In White, UnderOath … all of whom have been on tour with or as support for … Nothing More … “This is the Time (Ballast)” to dive in to some Nothing More …OceanFloor is intro track to it FYI … as for UnderOath I saw them live early on and I immediately gravitated to them sounding like, Hawthorn Heights … will be glad to see all these bands loop back thru the local venues, hopefully soon!
