Hi John, amazing video as usual. Thank you for sharing. Beychevelle is very expensive in Asia, one of the most sort after red wines. I have tried Pouget 2011 and 2012.. both are quite good and very consistent quality, the price tag is also very reasonable, half the price of Beychevelle surely..again thank you for sharing this video

Absolutely fantastic video! I especially liked the history, planting percentages and proximity to other chateau. I have always felt like these fourth growth wines we're always a great value. I bought a bunch of 2000s long ago, and they were all great. Again, outstanding video and information. Keep up the great work!

Good job. Stumbled upon an outstanding vintage of Cte Beychevelle some years ago. Something like a 2003, I think. What a revelation! Actually wandered up the actual chateau while visiting the Medoc with my daughter some years back. Smack dab on the estuary there. Floored by the number of Chinese roaming the Medoc, by the way- with cameras no less. Realized pretty soon that I wasn’t the only one discovering the wine as prices exploded with subsequent strong vintages (2005, 2010, 2015, e.g.) Great wine, but would prefer you kept that to just me and you. Preciate ya, bro.

Another great video, thank you. I toured Bordeaux this past fall and visited Chateau Beychevelle. I believe their wines are high quality and worthy of your "Cellar Defender" status. While in Bordeaux, we stayed at a Chateaux I cannot name. While returning from dinner, a member of the kitchen staff whispered to me to come into a hallway anteroom. There he had about a dozen bottles of partially filled first and second growth Bordeaux. In broken English he explained that a group of Chinese people had dinner at the Chateaux and the hotel staff didn't serve all the wine. Would I like to have some? A group of us pounded down some excellent Bordeaux, including Chateaux Talbot. I tipped him very well on our departure. By the way, I just passed WSET Level 2. On to Level 3!

Good choices… An aged Talbot turned me onto Bordeaux and I think Lafon-Rochet is one of best values in Bordeaux… It showed really well in a Bordeaux vs California Cab Blind Tasting video I did.

Thank you! Yes, the classification is still quite accurate for these Fourth Growth producers! If they were reclassified, only a couple minor tweaks would need to be made. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

These are all excellent recommendations - but then again, all your wine recommendations are always excellent. Though the Talbot is quite overpriced here, Chateau Lafon-Rochet and Prieure-Lichine are more reasonably priced in my usual wine cellar that specializes in Bordeaux. Thank you for this new shopping list!😁 You’re the best! Santé, John!

Great video. Always enjoy the Bordeaux content. St. Julien definitely well represented in the fourth growth category. Recently opened a 2010 Talbot for my dad’s birthday. Really nice wine. Many other 4th growth producers to try, though! By the way, I always enjoy the content on release, but equally if not more useful is to refer to previous videos when I’m looking into a specific category. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Hey JJ! Happy Holidays! I am tempted to ask whether you are in NYC for business or pleasure, but you may have heard that before. Earlier in my collecting career, I looked to the Second Labels of the First Growths which back in the day were really great bargains. Over the long weekend, we have been celebrating with Joseph Perrier NV paired with Coral Trout Goujons, 2017 Petaluma Riesling with Mud Crab and 2021 Macon Villages Chameroy with Chinese Omelet. All dishes were cooked at home because your humble correspondent and his partner happily identify as a 1950's couple. Perhaps you can do me a solid by recommending three vintage Champagnes you may consider taking to a single bottle club dinner. I am also reading the Edith Grossman translation of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The main character has gone mad from reading too many books and I think we both know how that feels. I drink wine, I read books and I know things! Cheers!

I bought some bottles of Pouget in the 2013 vintage and I really liked it despite this year being generally considered one of the weakest in recent history. It cost me less than 30 euro a bottle in retail here in Poland. I haven't had a chance to taste it in other, better vintages, but it showed very well in a lesser one, which is a good sign to me 😀

Really excited about your videos on the crus. I very much look forward to the 5. Cru overview. Just read William Kelley’s review on Pontet Canet 2020 in bottle. He wasn’t allowed to taste it on the chateau (maybe because the 2019 went from 98p by Lisa Perotti Brown to a 93p score by him.?) The 2020 only scores 92+ so I can imagine some trouble being underway.

Thanks very much! Very interesting indeed. Yes, I’m a big fan of several Fifth Growths. That video is just a challenge, because there are so many of them. I’ll either do it in two parts or during a week I have more time than normal. Cheers!
@mgbbdk Жыл бұрын
@@AttorneySomm Two parts makes great sense. I really like your in depth pov on each winery and two parts could make time enough so that there could be room for interesting facts. Very well done John. Funny because this weekend has kinda turned into a Bordeaux weekend for me. I had a slightly disappointing Cali Bordeaux blend on Friday. So I dug into some real Bordeaux's. Last night I had a wine I took a flier on, 2019 Collines de L'if. Tonight I'm preparing braised short ribs. The choices I have are some real ones. 2007 Chateau Pape Clement( I don't believe this was a part of the 1855 classification) , or 1996 Chateau Latour. Not sure what one yet. But the Latour is a bit of a special one to me, and the bottle is in exceptional condition. Not quite sure how much energy it will have left to age. Any thoughts?
@AttorneySomm Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. These Fourth Growths are often under the radar. Pape Clement has become a much better producer since Bernard Magrez bought it than it was in the 1850s. In fact, Haut-Brion was the only Graves producers that was classified in the 1855 classification. 1996 Latour is a very special wine! You can enjoy it now or it will age for decades. Just be sure to allow plenty of time as it may take a while to show its best and it will keep evolving as the hours pass. Enjoy!
@johnoneal4711 Жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I think I will let the Latour lay down for a bit longer. Thanks for the expertise. So it's the Pape Clement. But the 2009 Puy-Lacoste is showing super well also. I'm very blessed to have a few choices, as these.

Duhart-Milon '10, the wine that made me fall in love with bordeaux again after a long hiatus. Tried the '05 recently and was very dissappointed with it. Very thin and flabby, maybe a bad bottle or just a bad year for them. I'm focusing on the '16 now and will be stocking my cellar with the '19 and prepare for the magnificent '22.
@AttorneySomm Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes I’ve been generally underwhelmed by 05 so far. Think that is a smart approach. 3 excellent vintages!
@fvrs3411 Жыл бұрын
@@AttorneySomm The ‘05 were drinking quite nice a couple of years ago. I believe the wines are entering their second closing window. We will have to get back in 10-15 years and see if they really are the vintage of a lifetime as all the growers and critics claimed it to be. For now I’ll just enjoy the ‘09, ‘10 and ‘16’s as they are drinking so beautifully now.
@fvrs3411 Жыл бұрын
Update - I came across a single bottle of Duhart-Milon '96 and opened it yesterday. Again a very disappointing offering from the château. Lack of concentration and depth. It seems like their '10 is their best wine yet. Currently drinking Grand-Puy-Lacoste and it performs great. It's clearly a superior Pauillac and also cheaper where I live. No more Duhart for me (besides the 2 bottles of '10 I have left in the cellar).

which aoc delivers the most elegant style on the left bank? saint julien? i think i’m gonna buy some Brainaire 2018, or maybe 2019, i think 2019 is more elegant.

It varies a bit by producer, but if I had to generalize, Margaux is probably most elegant and then St. Julien. Branaire is an excellent choice!
