I didn't realise they were this expensive! I don't understand how Kia can price these like they do, when there is newer and cheaper offerings coming onto the market, that are just as competitive? I guess when they're also restricting the amount of Niro's coming into Australia, they can do what they like and there will be a certain group of buyers that'll pay for that. I'm sure it's everything you've said it is, but I just can't do it personally. The looks alone put me off of it, the rearend styling more than anything. Great review though! My next new car will be an ICE vehicle, which I'm hoping will happen in the next few weeks or so, I'm just not ready to take that EV plunge, in all honesty, it'll probably be another 4-5 years before I see myself buying an EV and by then, there should be a lot more choice and hopefully priced more appropriately!

I can't comment about the car because we don't get here in South Africa but it's refreshing to hear an honest and balanced review. It's true that over the past decade or so, Kia and Hyundai have become full members of the establishment club and their prices reflect that. However, unfortunately, they've also learnt to over price some of their cars. So it's great to hear a reviewer praise the car where praise is due but also call them out on pricing.

In Canada we don't get a couple of your recommendations. bought the 2023 ev and really like it. about 5K CAD lower than 2024. very good quality and finish. saves me $200 Canadian/month and time in traffic cuz I can use HOV lane. no downside. chargers aren't always available but no biggie. didn't mention the 4 driving modes and ipedal. ok review.

You mention the BYD Atto. I've read some not-so-great owner reviews mentioning cheap materials and early breakdowns, as well as poor after-sales service since BYD doesn't have its own established repair centres, so you're dealing through off-shore call centres and referrals to a limited number of MyCar service centres. The warranty is a bit tricky to navigate too, so beware. Perhaps in a few years, BYD will better establish itself in Australia and improve on this issues. As always, you get what you pay for.

Enjoyed our test drive , features are great, V2L , iPedal and the efficiency same as our Kona. Just 10k too expensive to justify currently.

Enjoyed your balanced review. It is an expensive EV, but judging by all the reviews I have read of the Niro, it is also a very good and very practical car - you get what you pay for! I think that the only real general gripe is the charging time. The much-awaited MG4 when it's released, judging by the overseas reviews, will certainly provide some competition for the Niro. Likewise the Cupra Born seems good, but both the Born and the MG4 seem a bit smaller than the Niro. I have considered both Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, and they are both very good EVs particularly considering their efficiency, but from what I can see, the build quality and overall eco and sustainable features of the Niro make it a better choice.

We've got the EV GT and absolutely love it. As far as cost goes we can salary sacrifice a novated lease and with the current tax incentives (no FBT) the Kia was cheaper than a mid spec Corolla Cross hybrid to lease. It was a no brainer as Kia had stock and a choice of 2 colours, and the Corolla X felt old and small by comparison. The MG4 hasn't been released yet and the Atto 3 was too much of an unknown and the stop-sale was fresh in mind - didn't inspire confidence. The Kona EV was also great and cheaper, but also felt older and a bit small by comparison.

Yeah the prices start at $26,840. I have a hybrid (not plug in) where the breaks charge the second battery and I get over 500miles per fill up. I recommend this because of less gas but no need to recharge. However overall the car is well worth just know he's showing the mark up version that is super upgraded ..

if you are going to purchase a 7.2kW charging box you will also need to upgrade the power point and cable to the fuse box while also installing at minimum 30amp circuit breaker and label the point point for EV use only so keep that in mind as that will cost $$$ so you will have to factor that in. I was looking at off peak usage times and basically most companies of peak is from 10pm to 7am, so that is 9 hours. As for off peak rates, of course it varies if you are feeding back solar energy into the system or you have battery back up (both are virtually NILL during off peak times) that said the working out an average is hard as everting today is variable mix with everything in between, that said its about 31c (no discount no feedback into he system off peak), that said I could be wrong on that as its hard to get a direct number with all the variables. So based on 7.2kW during off peak in theory you should be able over 9 hours recharge up to 71.1kWh which should be around $22.07c My numbers are based on a rough guess of petrol to electricity conversion (so that will be at best not accurate) I do roughly around 250km per week (on a slow week) therefor I would need to recharge at least 4 times per week to ensure enough charge in the battery, that said I would not need to use the entire 9 hour of peak cycle, based on a crude petrol conversion I would need at least up to 30kWh, 30kWh per recharge per off peak time rate, that would be cost per recharge event is approx. $9..30c x 4 = $37.2 per week, which i uses is reasonable as the petrol equiv would be around 35L at 98 RON fuel rate of lets say $1.85.9 (depending on where you buy from and what cycle - pro tip if in NSW use the NSW Govt Fuel app) so that would be $65. So for my needs an EV would be 24% cheaper per week in terms of energy consumption (again rough guess based on a crude petrol to electricity conversion rate). Is it worth it? (throws hands up and in the air and shakes them left to right as in I don't know). That said if you have solar feedback or battery backup obviously prices the per kWh recharge price point comes down drastically potentially up to 12c cheaper but again you have to factor in cost to get that equipment and then installed. To me it's like the old KPG dilemma, the break even point was around (even back then when LPG was at 49c per litre) something like 5.8 years before you started to see positive returns in your favor. Thanks for reading.

Interesting review, yes, agree, costs too much, much that’s good in this car, but some disappointing issues as well, lighting for one should not be halogens. I live regionally so range is critical if I consider an EV, and an ability at faster charging for stopovers on distance travels would be very important. I keep looking for something that could erase range anxiety when travelling from my large regional city. But infrastructure in regional areas isn’t great, so a lot of thinking and watching to see what’s next in terms of battery development and wider spread of charging infrastructure is where I sit right now. Thanks for an informative and interesting review.
@therightcar
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg. Yep, the regional areas are going to suffer most when it comes to the rollout of the infrastructure - though cities aren’t great either! Glad you found it interesting, and I’m also really keen to see when the “big leap in battery tech” comes!

The Niro in Australia does not get a heat pump system, so travelling in winter significantly shortens the range. It is not even an option. NZ cars get a heat pump apparently. Pity, particularly at this price. The BTD Atto 3 does get a heat pump at $25k cheaper.

I read that the S like has wireless carplay but the GT doesn't?! How is that even possible?
@therightcar
@therightcar 6 ай бұрын
You read correctly. It’s down to the fact that this media system can’t cope with having in-built Sat Nav, as it does in the GT-Line, as well as operating wireless phone mirroring. The S has no Nav, hence wireless is possible.

@@therightcar not the point. The company will price the car according to where it sees the car selling and then determine the sales targets. If it meets those targets it just isn't overpriced. Pure and simple. Selling more would just be a bonus but it might also eat into the sales of other models
