The Sorrows of Young Werther is a great book and led a lot of authors to imitate it. One of my favorite under rated books is by Virginia Woolf called The Waves. Its a book about 6 people trying to come to grips over a friends death. Virginia writes this book from the inside of the characters instead of outward emotions of grief. A very good book about how we as humans come to grips with death but also talking about how we are all really connected. As many people have said a book very ahead of its time.

Excellent selection, and to my own surprise, I actually read most of them (many as required reading in school). If I was to add one more, I'd go with the very quick read: Letters to A Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. And it is just that: a selection of letters between Rilke and a younger poet, about life, love, trying to find your own path, ... and it is thought-provoking, surprisingly modern and even somewhat emotional.

I read Candide back in school and I quite liked it. Leonard Bernstein turned it into an opera which is a fun one. It's interesting that another two of the books you featured also were made into spectacular operas, Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades and Massenet's Werther. Also, thanks to you, I am just leaving for the library to get a copy of The Black Count for a little Dumas background!

First, I LOVE your gallery wall! So pretty. I've had my eye on The Black Tulip for a couple of years now, but I need to buy an edition. The MacMillan blue/gold editions are so pretty. I finally got my hands on two. They're hard to find/buy in the U.S. I think I read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in high school, but I have a copy so I can re-read it and see if I did and if I like it. I like Anne's writing. I haven't read Villette though, by Charlotte. Your edition is very pretty. I'm guilty of cover buying. I like pretty books. I was telling my son about your video today. The Count of Monte Cristo is his favorite book.

Hello Emmelie! I hope all is well with you. Great video! I just wanted to enforce what you said about two books. First: Emile Zola and Therese Raquin. That was a really good book. As you know I finished it early this month and thoroughly enjoyed it so yes, people should read it. Second: Dumas - The Lion of French Literature. Nothing else needs to be said. 😀 The Black Tulip was fantastic and if a person loved The Count, they will love The Black Tulip. It should be read by everyone, but so should all his books in my opinion. 😉 Excellent video and I look forward to the next one. Have a great day!

I've added two books that you mentioned here that I never heard of (of course I heard about their authours). I read The black tulip a few years ago and it was OK for me, I prefer TCOM. Thank you for this Emmelie! I have read The Sorrows of Young Werther and thought it was a really good book. Also I have read The Picture of Dorian Gray but have not got around to Wilde's plays. Shame on me! May I suggest an under read classic for you? It is by Mikhail Lermontov and is called A Hero of Our Time. The title is meant to be ironic. It is a novel set in the Caucasus region in the early 19th Century. It is certainly worth checking out as it is a powerful work. I think you would love it. Anyway, happy reading!🙂

I read Werter in school here in Poland. It was quite a memorable book back then, as he was so hopelessly romantic that we cannot resist making fun of him. Planning to return to it with fresh eyes some day :). Of the books that are very close to my heart, yet they aren't overwhelmingly popular I'd definitely choose Stoner (MAYBE my favorite book), Of Mice and Man and Old Man and the Sea.
