patdavidmusic thanks for the video. One thing I am not sure about and hopefully you can help. For example, say I’m playing in the key of D major and I were to play a Am7 chord in that key of D, would I base the 1357 notes for that Am7 chord on the D major scale or the A major scale? This is one things I haven’t been able to find an answer for.. thanks.
@randm28415 жыл бұрын
@@itsmetheeprd I'm pretty sure you can only play the Am7 chord in the key of C, F or G Major. You cannot play an Am7 chord in the key of D Major or A Major.

Absolutely unbelievable. I have been fooling around with music for many years and this gentleman is the first to logically explain and demonstrate theory which I actually UNDERSTAND. I am starting with beginning guitar instruction and came across this video - this is the 1st one I have looked at from Pat and even though I did not view any of his previous videos, I actually understand this area of theory. Thanks much Pat!

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this!! Some videos are hard to understand and literally so creepy. I've played the viola and have only read alto clef since 4th grade, and thats been the extent of my music abilites. Last year I started playing guitar and this year I took a music theory class and am trying to play the piano, but it's been hell trying to figure it out among people who already knew it all from learning as they learned their insturment, which is an opportunity I never had. So an attractive, clear, guy with a cute accent is just what I need to succeed the rest of the year haha thanks so much again!

A GIFTED TEACHER. Many have all kinds of "technical-knowhow". Only very, very, very few know the most effective ways to pass it to others -- that will sink deep into the learner's gestalt grasp. Thanks ! would like to know do we still call it CMajor 7Th if I build it from the G or the E.? Thats what fucks me up . I always think from the root. example to form the C dom 7 th can have the root note b flat. ??
@patdavidmusic9 жыл бұрын
Great question mate, if you build from different notes the chord becomes inverted. first inversion is starting from 3rd, second inversion is starting from the 5th
@ibanezguitars40219 жыл бұрын
OK great thank you! Why is the first inversion starting 3? if its a Cmajor 7th starting from C be first inversion?
@patdavidmusic9 жыл бұрын
If it starts for C there is no inversion, if it starts from the next note , E, that's the 3rd degree that's the first inversion E G B C

A great trick that helped me understand this better was to remember the amount of semitones in between each chord structure. R - 4 - 3 Major R - 3 - 4 Minor R - 3 - 3 is Diminished R - 4 - 4 is Augmented R - 4 - 3 - 4 Is Major7 R - 3 - 4 - 3 is Minor7 R - 4 - 3 - 3 is Dominant 7 R - 3 - 3 - 3 Diminished 7 R - 3 - 3 - 4 Half Diminished 7 I think. Meaning you Hit the root note (R) then count up the semitones (This includes the black keys) until you hit your 3rd and then again to hit the 5th and so on to the 7th. It is good to know the names of each note of course but with this you kind of won't need to as much. (I'll edit this to make sure that it is accurate later. It is right up till the half diminished as far as I know, I'll have to double check or maybe you should.) Good luck :P
@SmugSuspenders9 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Moore (solbolt) That's great! Diminished is fun, since you can keep on stacking small thirds til you're back up on the root again :) Had to count how many semitones there is in a scale, and it's 12 so 12/3=4 :D That is 4 small triads til you're back up on the root, and then you can start over again :D Accordions are tuned in small triads, so it's all about the diminished there :D I'm trying to learn that now :) Cheers!

Hello from across the ditch Pat! Just wanted to say what great tutorial video's you make! They are clear, concise, and easy to understand, and you consistently reference previous learnings in relation to what you are currently teaching, which really helps to "lock in" the earlier teachings. Why anyone would bother to take the time to put a thumbs down on your video's is beyond me, and in my opinion reflects the sort of person they are. Cheers, Mike.

Thanks for the lesson really helped,but just a question. If I'm going to use a Min 7 chord can I just use a minor scale or do i have to take the root 3rd 5th and 7th then flatten the 3rd and 7th scale to have a minor 7th chord?
@mikepostdrums7 жыл бұрын
You can just use the notes that are in the natural minor scale as the 3rd and the 7th are both already minor. Minor 7th chord = 1 3b 5 7b

With a Cmajor 7th chord it is implied that the seventh note in the chord (seventh note in the scale), is major. 1 3 5 7 With a C minor 7, the seventh degree is regarded as being flattened, 1 3b 5 7b, With a C minor major 7th it is implied that the 7th degree is major whilst the 3rd degree is minor, 1 3b 5 7 hope this helps!
