Never heard of this product till now. I just got a $50 Amazon one, probably Chinese but it works. I noticed the one I have does not start disabling DFM (19 Silverado) until I hit 40 mph, so after I pull out of my neighborhood. After I hit 40 mph it’s good to go at any speed. Does this one operate in a similar fashion or is DFM disabled immediately without having to hit a certain speed first?

What would have been simpler would have been if they just let the lifters work normally while shutting off fuel delivery to different cylinders as necessary. I imagine that with the valves closed while the piston is trying to induct and expel it builds pressure and forces the currently working cylinders to work harder to rotate the crankshaft thus defeating any fuel economy gain.

Now you are just pumping air through the engine without using it i.e. engine braking. That would actually defeat the purpose. With the valves closed, the air in the cylinder acts as an air spring, recovering some of the compression losses.

My husband and I just traded in both of our Suburbans last weekend. They both have the 5.3L engines. His was a 2016 with 115k miles, and mine a 2018 with 86k miles. None of them had the engine failure. We were very proactive to replace the oil every 3k miles with Mobile One Full Synthetic oil. The 2016 tranny failed a little over 50k miles, we replaced it with a new Chevy tranny at our expense.

I bought a new 14 v-6 Silverado not knowing about the afm. I felt it kick in and knew it was not good for the engine. I only had to add a small amount of pedal to get it back to firing on all 6. I bought a afm delete that now prevents the afm from kicking in. It plugs into the port under the dash with no modifications. It does have a constant drain on the battery so for l/t storage just remove it. Well worth the $$$.
@8020Media
@8020Media 4 ай бұрын
Yepp, that's the best way to do it. If you want a device with less drain, our Boost device only pulls 0.71mA of power while turned off. Range's device pulls up to 6mA and usually sits within 2-3mA so theirs drains battery way faster than ours does.

The camshaft also needs to be replaced anytime the AFM or DFM lifters. Also, GM has a newer DOD - Displacement On Demand - on newer cars & trucks which has several hundred or more ways to deactivate cylinders.
@8020Media
@8020Media 2 ай бұрын
D - Think "several hundred or more ways" might be a stretch. Depending on what years you are referring to, there aren't very many solutions of deactivating these systems, unless you delete them.
@donaldhollingsworth3875
@donaldhollingsworth3875 2 ай бұрын
@@8020Media Thank you for your comment. Don't get me wrong, I love GM trucks but having a AFM, DOD or a DFM system on a truck to save 1-2 miles per gallon is just stupid on GM's part. Also, having a GDI system is stupid since Ford & other OEM's ran into a lot of problems with their GDI systems because excess carbon builds up on the intake valves. GM is probably going to have the same issues. Another stupid idea is the auto stop/start system because most engine wear occurs at start up since their is no oil pressure for a few seconds which over time will wear out the piston rings & increase cylinder wear. First came the Active Fuel Management (AFM) which deactivated the same 4 cylinders which created hot & cold cylinders when in V4 mode. Then came the Displacement On Demand (DOD) which came on certain GM models. I can't remember how that system worked. Then the modern Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) which GM states there are 17 different ways to deactivate certain cylinders from a V8 mode to a V4 mode to a V2 mode. On the AFM & DOD systems there are a lot of lifter, camshaft, & piston ring failures at low mileage. Statically speaking there are thousands of different combinations. Think of it as all the different number combinations while playing to lottery. The 2 major problems to over come is heat retention of the deactivated cylinders & engine balance. If there was a way to restrict coolant flow around the deactivated cylinders & have a electronically controlled harmonic balancer so a odd number of cylinders could be deactivated would provide even more combinations of deactivating cylinders.
